This episode covers the wake of Alexander III's death and Scotland's search for an heir. This led to Edward I of England's intervention and after his dominance was rejected by the Scottish, Edward sought to conquer instead. William Wallace and later King Robert the Bruce were the leaders of the Scottish resistance which eventually saw England defeated and Scotland remain independent.
Recommended books:
A. Barrell, Medieval Scotland (2000). A great overview of the period but its scope is much broader than this episode.
G. Barrow, Kingship and Unity: Scotland, 1100-1306 (2003). Much greater focus than the above.
M. Morris, A Great and Terrible King: Edward I and the forging of Britain (2008). For an overview of England and its aims during the Scottish Wars of Independence.
Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.
When England returned the Stone of Destiny in '96, they were like "sorry this took so long, traffic was horrible."
Yeah im suprised they did. England is arguing with like 2 or 3 small countries about returning culturally relevant shit that was taken to a british musueum from colonial times.
There argument is basically "were not done looking at it, your welcome to come look whenever. If your visas go through"
exbronco1980 You actually believe that that shapeless lump of sandstone is the Stone of Destiny?

Pku_Creamier from what song is it?
Vasilis Douklias Blood of Bannockburn probably...
Pku_Creamier where? I feel like I'm blind
The lyrics of the song go "We need a king to rule out land, Bruce is in command" and "it is the crown thats in his sight, and its the reason we will fight" is the next line of the song.
Dakota Taylor I see, thank you very much
So basically Scotland didn't want to be Wales'd but ended up getting wailed on by the Welsh
Spartan057J yes
The Scots got their revenge on those pesky Welsh archers at Bannockburn.
Yep, it's a whale of a tale.... I'll show myself out.
What does that means?
@@saguntum-iberian-greekkons7014 England annexed Wales so the people in Wales had to live under English law.
Wales'd is my new favourite word.
ScoundrelFilms same
ScoundrelFilms I guess two thousand years of defended your self and your culture against several different invading people doesn't get you much respect!?...The Welsh have a saying "Yma O Hyd"...
...And they are still going strong, especially their language...something the Irish or Scottish can't boast about. Btw, Wallace is a Norman name for Welshman, which implies he had Cumbric ancestors, who were cousins of the Welsh. Your ignorance about alot of British history is Staggering.
Nada Barton perhaps
Give him a break, chum, he's just appreciating the joke!
Nada Barton Wales is shite just admit it.
"We need a king to rule our land, Bruce is in command!" Love me a good Sabaton reference!
Anytime his accusation of treason was brought up in his trial, Wallace would furiously deny it, because Edward was never his king so he couldn’t betray him.🏴
English Kings ignoring the Pope is like Dave Chapelle's Black Bush skit about the United Nations: "Oh no, are you going to sanction me with your army? Oh right, it's way smaller than mine and in central Italy!"
and then the UN teams up with the Aliens that can glass entire planets. :P
more like current sanctions on russia.
Wasn't returned until 1996, just a tad longer than expected
Yeah, there was an attempt by Scottish nationalist students to steal it in the 50's from Westminster Abbey that succeeded, but it was eventually returned after a few weeks. Then when it was sent back to Scone in 1996, it was agreed that whilst it was housed there, whenever a new Monarch is crowned at Westminster, it is to be returned to Westminster Abbey for the Coronation.
JOE PRINCE That’s not the real stone
@@dbilly121 I suppose if Scotland left the union but retained their Queen as the Queen of Scots, then Charles or William would have to go up to Edinburgh or Scone and be crowned there.

It wasn’t just the English errors that lead Bruce to win Bannockburn, it was the good training he gave his men, and good leadership.
Plus the Knights Templar
Selecting an advantageous battleground and good use of schiltrons were also a factor.
Having the Black Douglas as a commander would have helped too....one of Scotlands greatest military minds ever
"found a subtle and clever way" "he murdered him" LMAAAOOOOO
"Meaning everyone died for nothing" funny but true
Akhash Dhillon ouch
Not true. The English died for nothing. The Scots retained their independence.
@@scottishbikerseumas5317 Did they though? Looks a lot like they under English rule.
They’ve been running their own affairs quite a lot since devolution . They still want more autonomy though but progress is slowly getting there.
@Lambda Neither is England. It’s a union.
Thinking Scotland is under English rule is similar to thinking California is ruled by New York.
1:21 Wales'd...I lol'd at that xD
i didnt :(
Other examples include: Crimea'd
Austria'd
Sudentenlanded
So is ''to wales'' a verb now?
rather, to get wale'd
The Essex has sunk off the coast of Cardiff after an unfortunate Wale'ing accident.
The whale got Wale'd by a whaler and so wailed
Wale you stop that
So England wale'd 3 quarters of the globe basically
Finally, I was afraid you decided to stop and I've really been enjoying these
One important note that was missed is that Robert Bruce (King of Scots) only sided with Edward because of his father, Robert Bruce the competitor, but once he died Bruce broke his oath to England for Scottish independence. He for sure acted on his own political gain to be crowned King but also was very aware of the importance the war had on the Scottish realm. J.W.S Barrow's book on Robert The Bruce and the Community of the Realm of Scotland provides a brilliant source on the Scottish side of the war for any interested in it!
It’s a bit dishonourable to break oaths but Robert the Bruce was that kind of man.
Yeah Robert is a distant ancestor of mine through The Campbell Clan. And I think he was excommunicated.
@@Valencetheshireman927 If you were forced to take an oath as a slave or die, wouldn't you break that oath and kill the enslaver as soon as you could? Not dishonourable.

HistoryMarche All I'll say is this...The Welsh have fought several Bigger countries and Empires in the last 2000 years and guess what!? "Yma O Hyd"
Roman, Saxon, Viking, Norman, English. None of them could complete their ultimate goal. To end Cymru (Or the Houses Of Omri)
I'm fully aware of this. Furthermore I always root for the underdog. I found the "You have been Walesed" funny not because Wales is a pushover, but because the joke is ironic.
Similarly, France was usually an influential player in Europe, a great power and a superpower for brief spells, but that doesn't prevent jokes which say that "France always loses its' wars", which are based solely on their spectacular and more recent defeat in WW2., not on their history as a whole.
HistoryMarche yep
The ultimate goal of the Romans was to destroy Wales...? I think you're a bit delusional.

Like how 'Alnwick' is pronounced 'annick,' 'Berwick' is pronounced 'berrick'

you make my day everytime you upload a new video. there is no other channel on youtube that i am checking every day to see if the have uploaden a new video. thanks for all the effort you put into all the videos!
As someone who is Scottish I'm used to have the highly romanticised and dull history shoved down my throat in school so to see an outside perspective that takes in the bigger picture was highly entertaining, and also shows how rubbish schools are at teaching history (i had no clue that Scotland invaded Ireland and the narrative i was taught gave the impression willy wallace was captured at Bannockburn). So thanks for the great work!!
Yeah, the Scottish invasion of Ireland was news to me too.
Steve Lovelace it's hilariously ironic how the original tribe, the Scoti, were originally from Ireland, and invaded Scotland, but would go back to their homeland as invaders.
D McC interesting
D McC That's understandable. They want you to be proud of your country, and as long as they don't feed you any lies, it's totally acceptable.

It was historically shite.!
Basically, but such a great movie!!
@@jbearmcdougall1646 it show how Scotland is stronger than England☺
The actual historical events are a lot better than Braveheart. Just the idea of the Battle of Stirling Bridge was completely wasted on this movie where they moved it to a field and renamed it "the Battle of Stirling". Winning with less numbers and using a bottleneck would've been a fun action scene to watch I'm amazed they didn't do it.

Absolutely amazing video, just thought I'd say that Berwick is pronounced Berrick (like Derek) and not Bur-wick.
Yes , it doesn't rhyme with Lerwick and Prestwick.
7:26 LOL. Burr-wick? I think you'll find that's Berwick.
Quite a prominent town in Anglo-Scottish disputes.
Hope you enjoyed this episode? BRILLIANT.
Love the wink to Sabatons song (Bruce is in command)🤣🤣
Hey, remember me? I mentioned to you in a previous episode that Alnwick is pronounced Annick? Well just in case you care, at 7:25 you mentioned Berwick and pronounced it phonetically, this town is similar to Alnwick in that it is pronounced more like Berrick.
Birgham is also pronounced wrongly and should be birjum
Fun fact : Alexander III died on a foggy night when he rode too far ahead of (I don't know who was with him but I inow someone was) the person/people with him and they found him and his hourse dead the next morning at the bottom of either a hill or a cliff (I'm not sure which) suggesting they fell off.
This helped with my school project so much there are basically no videos on this topic

Hey, in your next video of the history of England and Great Britain, remember to talk about the Treaty of Windsor in 1386, that marked the beginning of the Luso-British aliance

the Isle of Man changed hands at the end?
This channel is too underrated maan
I'm going to be honest:
I was just listening to this, and so I really thought the 'declaration of "our broath" ' was a How I Met Your Mother reference. I literally just re-watched it and am delighted (and embarrassed) to find otherwise.
Huntingdonshire (now just a section of Cambridgeshire) was one of those parts actually controlled by Scotland, a legacy of the slightly more amiable relationship of Anglo Saxon England & Scotland. Because King Davids dynasty had partial Anglo Saxon ancestry, those Normans just assumed they controlled Scotland too by default.
Mate, we were all worried about you! Glad you´re back!! Hope you´re well!

Aye true but we did lose Moray sadly
Battle of rosilin not mentioned but what a video love these
"That will learn ya" should become this channels motto.
Downsides: A violent and ultimately pointless war that took far too many lives.
Upsides: Robert gave my family some moderately prestigious titles, for which we continued to name children after him for centuries.
I'm torn on how to feel about this.
GLORY
England invaded Scotland for no other reason than the greed of Edward I. So the Scots should just say ”oh, all right then, that’s ok”? That will be the day
The war was about scottish independence, and scots gained independence. I wouldnt call it pointless

(DEEP INHALATION)... The time has come to fight Scotland must untie
Scotland must untie what? I thought the Gordian knot was a Greek thing?
Great series. In fact, excellent history videos all round. However I am puzzled by many of the pronunciations, as the narrator sounds as if (British) English is his first language.
Are they pronounced as they would sound at the time?
For example, Berwick is usually pronounced Berrik and Maldon is usually pronounced Moorlldun. There are some others too.
I admit it is nit picking, but as a native (British) English speaker myself, it does sound odd. Otherwise keep up the good work. I have recommended the series to several other people.

Wallace execution was gruesome! It wasn't the first time someone was hanged, drawned and quartered, but it was still a brutal way to die. Hugh Dispenser the Younger was executed in this fashion while the Queen Isabella wife of Edward II was eating and enjoying the execution. Brutal times!

You’ve done Scotland and Wales you should do cornwall now as it has its own history before being conquered by England. You could do all the Celtic nations. Scotland. Wales. Cornwall. Ireland
Sorry, but you've got your racial distributions a bit wrong. Lowland Scotland was never Celtic, rather its always been Anglo-Saxon in both language and ethnicity. (The only exception was the former Kingdom of Strathclyde south of where Glasgow now is, down to English Cumbria, but they spoke old Welsh, not Gaelic.)
