    March 19, 1286. King Alexander III, whom you might vaguely recall from the Haakon IV video as a king who existed, is dead. His only heir is his three-year-old granddaughter, who was also the daughter of the king of Norway and married to the crown prince of England, it was beginning to look like the band was getting back together! Then she died. And now, well, there was no obvious successor, and a lot of people had a claim to the throne. The council who was ruling the kingdom on the queen’s behalf decide in order to prevent civil war that they need a third party to weigh in, someone totally divorced from the situation with no interest in Scottish politics. And unfortunately they chose... the king of England. Who chose a guy, then quickly deposed him and put an Englishman in charge. Thus the stage was set for the wars of Scottish independence, featuring a lot less blue facepaint, a lot more backstabbing, and just a little bit more numberwang.
    Fun fact, for some reason this video is showing up as the 6th or 7th result for Numberwang on CZcams just because it shows up once in the subtitles. I wonder what happens if I put Numberwang in the description and tags a couple of times. Numberwang.
    Music (in order of appearance):
    Kevin Macleod - Scottish Jigs
    Kevin Macleod - Hidden Past
    San Francisco Symphonic Assembling covering Monty Python - King Arthur's Theme
    Kevin Macleod - Court of the Queen
    Kevin Macleod - Final Battle of the Dark Wizards

      You are aware that these Scottish laird "titles" are scams. Right?

    • @princekyros
      @princekyros Před 2 lety +34

      I haven't seen EstablishedTitles before but there's thousands of these websites that boldly claim that you can legally call yourself a lord/laird or lady or whatever and they always put in the small print that people calling Scottish landlords "lords" or "lairds" of "Glenmore" is a colloquial term/joke and it doesn't legally entitled you to anything.
      The house of lords even decided to weigh in on this and the court of Lord Lyons (the guy responsible for all arms and bearings in Scotland, as well as records of noble genealogies) directly stated that:
      "The ownership of “souvenir” plots of land of a few square feet or thereby such as are marketed from time to time, is insufficient to bring anyone within the jurisdiction of the Lord Lyon King of Arms."
      As far as I'm aware the only way of "officially" buying any sort of feudal (let alone an actual peerage title) title in the UK is through manorial lordships and even that's rife with scams and the house of lord again came out and warned people to not only fall for these scams (and then call and complain to them that is) but that manorial lordships only entitle you to getting a "Lord of X Manor" on your ID and that's about it.
      Scottish laid titles absolutely can't be bought and sold and especially not with useless tiny "souvenir" plots. It doesn't entitle one to anything.

      The irony being that the epiphet "Braveheart" referred to ROBERT THE BRUCE & not William Wallace Until Mel Gibson's movie.
      Robert had once made a solemn vow to go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land, but never had time to do so while getting war-torn Scotland back on its feet. So, after Robert died, his buddy Sir James Douglas/Black Douglas took King Robert's actual HEART in a box while crusading in the Holy Land.

He did request that his heart be taken to the holy land first but the crusade never materialized so instead, John Douglas and co took it with them to fight the Muslims in Spain. Unfortunately, almost the entire group was killed in the first battle so the heart and Douglas's body were sent back to Scotland and the heart finally laid to rest in Melrose.

    It gives me the warm fuzzies how literally every retelling of the Scottish war for independence is more interesting than Braveheart because it uses the ACTUAL history which is already cool and doesn’t need embellishments.
    Edit: also interesting thing Jack didn’t have time for, John Balials (no idea how it’s spelled,) still kicking around and this entire time he’s still the papal recognized king of Scotland, so Robby and his mates write this big letter to the pope arguing that unlike most monarchs the PEOPLE of Scotland chose him to be king, and this document is still an important piece in Scottish nationalism as it basically declared only the Scottish people could choose their ruler which has all sorts of later consequences when we get to the Jacobins.

      @PHX Swan That's Gaelic mythology. Scythians are specifically Indo-Iranian which means they definitely are not actually the ancestors of Celts though. More like cousins. (though there is actually a lot of leeway here as people in the past used "Scythians" _very_ broadly to refer to numerous steppe peoples. Of course not all of these should be treated as the same as the 'real' Scythians.)
      It's an interesting story, but it's about the same to me as the Sagas claiming Thor is descended from Agamemnon or everyone and their dad claiming to be Trojan. At least if we think of them as the same as the Saka we actually recognize as Saka/Scythians today.

    • @CraftsmanOfAwsomenes
      @CraftsmanOfAwsomenes Před 2 lety

      @PHX Swan Yeah, I know it's from his letter. I'm saying people back then made assumptions based on myths too. The English thought they were descendant from Trojans at the time.
      All Indo-European cultures are descended from the Yamnaya culture of the Pontic-Caspian Steppe, North of the Black Sea. They're not Scythians but Scythians are some of their descendants. The thing is Scythians are an Iranian people and don't predate the Halstatt and La Tène cultures associated with Celts. So they'd be more like cousins.
      Not saying it isn't fine to believe it though.
