Ooh, how perfect. Cant wait to receive my urban explore 20. Looks to be such a versatile little bag, ideal for city life.
I've done this with my explore v2 but it does really make me want a camera insert that does the same thing but with a more efficient use of padding. the Top Loading excels in being external, so it has more material than an internal cell might need.
Also, ideally, a single cell could lay parallel to the bag side access door rather than perpendicular
you're discounting the fact that by taking the core unit out you are removing most of the protection so your reasoning and conclusion are incorrect. you would need the external protection of the top loader as Ian shows it. it's a great approach he is showing here and means you can take a minimalist camera setup and still be able to store a moderate amount of additional gear in a relatively compact backpack setup
Done & Done…ordered the 20L on kickstarter and ordered the Top Loader from my camera store….love this idea! Will love to also try in my Action X 30….thanks for the great tip Ian!

Lovely more space too bad we dont have a ladder system so the top compartment cant auto adjust to the new space but still good enough
I'm concerned that a Toploader, when packed in a backpack like the Shimoda Urban 20, might push against my back if items inside exceed the frame height, causing discomfort.
I've noticed in the video that the Toploader can be slightly taller than the backpack's frame, and I'm worried it might be uncomfortable, similar to when I overfill my own bag.
Does this setup generally could cause discomfort as well?
I don’t think it does and have never noticed, but we are built differently. Both items are well padded.

No it will not.

yes - with all current Shinoda bags except the X70
