- After three months of testing the Shimoda Explore 40L camera backpack, I've come to the conclusion that this is the best camera bag available for adventure and landscape photography. In this episode, I discuss what I love about this camera bag and the very short list of items that I wish we're just a bit different, but if you're in the market for a new bag in the sub $300 price range, just save yourself some time and go ahead and order the Shimoda Explore 40L - you'll be happy you did, I know I am!

Thanks for going through the features of the bag. I too like the fact that you can set the outside face down and approach the equipment through the 'back' of the pack - especially given there are so many instances where you have to lay it over a damp section. They seemed to have designed the laptop holder in a secure fashion as well. I think you'd have to purchase a separate rain cover if you wanted it - having a convenient rain cover included would be nice.
Thank you for this review Mark. I really appreciated it. I hadn't heard of this bag or brand until yesterday when I watched Simon Baxter's latest video and saw the branding and loved the look. Your review came up first on a Google search so congrats on your SEO! I've been using the Peak Design 30L for a while now and have never really liked it that much. It is more of an every day bag, which is what I wanted, but I struggle to fit what I need into it. I'd love the 40L Shimoda for every day, but the water bottle's an issue, and I'd love the waist straps to be removable.
Thanks for the review. Fortunately my local camera shop in New Zealand stocks the bag. I am going to look at it. Fully agree about the water bottle holder on the outside (had a water bladder that leaked and caused 1,200 NZD worth of damage to my camera - insurance covered it, but not the loss of photography opportunity). This factor my be a deal killer.

I like the backpacks which open on this side, so you can put them also on wet grounds, use your gear and put them back so that your back stays clean and dry, I need to change mine in future for one of those.
I've been struggling (for years) with a rucksack that just doesn't fit me properly and that doesn't have a proper / stable way of attaching my tripod. Of the bags reviewed, I liked the look of the Shimoda best. Coincidentally, they were making their first appearance at the UK's 2019 Photography Show last weekend, so we drove up to Birmingham to see if it was as good in real life as it looked on screen. I can live without a dedicated water bottle pouch and I tend to use waist straps to keep bags stable as I'm a larger-framed bloke and I carry heavy medium format film kit as well as a DSLR. Anyway, it's about as perfect as it could be for me, so I'm delighted that I saw your review. Thank you.
I visited the only retail vendor of Atlas bags in the PNW, determined to purchase the Atlas Athletic. I have been romancing this bag for over a year. Much to my dismay, the Athletic was too shallow for my D850. The only option was the Atlas adventurer, which was way too big for day-hikes. I came home with the Shimoda, and I can't wait to take it out! My partner was afraid I was going to sleep with it tonight. Another great bonus is the adjustable height. My partner is 6'3", I am 5'3". With the adjustable shoulder height, we can both carry this bag - huge bonus points!
The problem with their inclusion of water bladder spot (F-Stop has the same issue) is the weight distribution is all wrong for long hikes anyway. The heaviest weights should be close to your back and as low as possible to improve centre of gravity. Also as the bladder empties, the weight of the pack against your back squeezes the water out the straw. With these bags, you have 3 kilos suspended away from your back levering you backwards.
Great video! I just got the mountainsmith tanuck 40L. took it on the field and noticed how heavy this bag is... 5lbs + the ICU makes it to a 5.5lbs just the bag. Shimoda 3lbs including ICU... I'm going to return this tanuck bag. thank you for the informative video.

So I got the bag, but I also have the mindshift backlight 36L and I'm torn. I love the design of the Shimoda but it's bigger and bulkier than the mindshift and yet I struggle to fit all my gear that I have on the mindshift. Also, I find the EVA padding is not as protective as the traditional dividers so I need to be more careful with putting the bag down. I'll give it a a few more opportunities but I might be selling the Shimoda and sticking to the mindshift. We'll see.
Thanks for the review Mark. Though I don't own one of those, I have been comparing. I like the multiple camera access of this bag. The lack of a water bottle could be a deal killer for me, like for the other Mark below. But I was thinking: can't the accessory pocket, which seems designed for a tripod, be used for a water bottle, in the absence of a tripod?

Hey Mark! Amazing videos brother! I just picked this bag up, and have used the Tilopa in the past. Have you used FStop bags before? How do they compare to you? To me...this one is much more comfortable. I do like the aesthetics of the FStops a tad better...but that's not everything!

Overall I like the Shimoda better, mainly because of the comfort and the fact that I can access a couple small pockets while I’m wearing the pack - couldn’t do that with the Ajna.

You’ve sold me on the Shimoda bag, however, I’m struggling with which size bag to order. I carry a D810, the trinity of lenses, a panning head & rail and much of the same accessories you do. I generally day hike, and don’t pack camping gear. How did you arrive at the 40L? Have you ever experienced any limitations where you wish you had the 60L? Mine came with two small inserts and I really hate this setup. Wondering if I should order medium insert for $79 or sell it and take the loss and get Mindshift backlight or Lowepro Protactic 450 which I seem to love (tried friends) after using this Shimoda on couple of trips. With Out of Moab coming soon I am confused :-)
kits VA I use the medium core and small core ICU - works pretty well, but I don’t think two small icus would work for me either.
Great video as usual Mark. I have a question and that is do you know if a Capture Pro Clip made by Peak Design would fit on the upper portion of the strap. It has to be fairly narrow for it to work. If your not familiar with the this item I would appreciate if you could measure the narrowest spot and let me know. I like to carry my camera out side the bag when I’m roaming around and with this Clip it works perfect. Thank you.
Great review Mark and I agree with much of what you said. I have the 40L and would have liked a flip top like on the 60L. Also a zippered pocket on at least one of the hip bolsters would have been good. All minor things really. I got the roller as well and keep my laptop and gear in there when hoofing it thru the airport and that works great, getting much of the weight off my back. The only other thing I hope @shimodadesigns does is come out with a large core unit for photographers like me that carry an attached long lens. Using a large ICU from another bag and it works, but I like Shimoda's core unit design.

Yep, I bring both as carry ons. I put my clothes and other stuff in the 40L and all the gear in the roller which makes it so much easier traveling. Then when I get to the destination I swap everything. I've done 2 trips so far like this and it's been a breeze. Both bags fit in the overhead, but on one trip I had the 40L under the seat because space was at a premium on that particular flight.

Loved the review - and I may buy this as the price I can buy it for is US$200 less than the Atlas Athlete. However I would mention that after 4 trips to Nepal, 2 x Iceland, Kyrgystan, Myanmar, Cambodia, all over China etc. etc. the VAST majority of people use water bottles and not bladders which can become dangerous bacteria breeding grounds if not cleaned properly (which most people don't do). So I'm with you, a couple of pockets as per the LowePro Flipsides 350/450 would be brilliant and improve this no end.
hi, very informative video thank you. agree with what @Kevin say, I guess bladders are more for running, biking (more active stuff than hiking) not saying that as a wildlife photographer when you're hidden in your spot, with your bag around it's not possible to drink with this system. I have the old f-stop Loka (probably designed by Ian) which have pocket for water bottle why change ? So where do you put your bottle of water ? cheers.
@@roybon4424 I know Mark recommended I buy the X Action but it wasn't available in my country of residence and was extremely expensive to import. So I bought the Explore 40L. The bag is very good and gets compliments from other photographers.
However I'd change it for the X in a second. I should note though that I've been able to use the top right stretchy pocket on the strap for a small (700ml, no more, thinner better than wider) water bottle when hiking (it's surprisingly stretchy and robust) and the bag on the side that's primarily for storing the tripod can easily hold a large bottle or even two. Not ideal as I have to find another way to store the tripod but if you prefer bottles to a bladder it's a possible solution.

Thanks for the video . I just received my 40l today.. I find it difficult to access my gear if I don't set my bag on the ground (for example, just swinging the bag to the front along the waist straps). I reckon it's due to the direction of the opening to the side.. zippers access is totally impossible to get to. Do you have any get around for that?
I wish the waist belts were removable. It's great for hiking but annoying (they flap around) when you're in the city. I also wish there's a 30L version. I love the colours though.

Mark, when you do a backpack review, it would be really helpful if you actually put it on so we can see how it rides. Kind of like demoing a car without driving it and just showing us what fits in the trunk.

Chris Sale Oh that’s a tough one, Chris! The photographer in me says you got to go with the lens as this will aid in the actual photography side of photography, but nothing feels better than getting a new photography bag! It’s a tough choice!

Indeed! Then I'd say the bag comes first - without it you'll be carrying your new lens in your hands.

Hi Mark! thanks for this review. Super informative. Was wondering where you placed your tripod. I've been looking for a bag that doesnt scream "photographer" with expensive gear inside as well, but the thing I think that gives it away is the tripod strapped on the outside. I was wondering if the tripod is able to fit within the bag. I'm using a Mefoto Globetrotter carbon fiber tripod currently. Would appreciate if you give some feedback. Thanks!

Rolando Lores I haven’t had any issues but if you’re going to be in heavy rain for a long period of time I’d recommend a rain cover.
I tried the bag at B&H a couple of weeks ago and loved it. It's on my short list once I sell a couple of others. 30 L sounds like a great size as well. But I have a question regarding using a Peak Design Clip on the shoulder strap, it looks like the strap might be too wide, does anybody use it with this bag?
Vlast Pojman I don’t use it on this bag but it does fit.
Shimoda needs to collaborate with osprey to come up with the perfect bag (doesn’t exist). I shove a pd messenger bag into my osprey when I hike. It’s not ideal for access but you can’t beat the comfort of the suspension system on long hikes. I often find myself on 5-15 mile hikes to get to the best waterfalls and comfort is number one priority.
Hey Mark! Another great video! I’m looking for a travel/hiking bag. I’d like one that can carry my camera and everything for at least a day hike. Would you recommend the atlas adventure large frame or the shimoda 60l? I have a canon 5dm4 with the trinity lens setup.
I'd go with the Shimoda, but either back will hold what you're looking to carry just fine!

Is this pack suitable for someone that is short (5'6"), or is the 30L more appropriate? I need to pack 2 Sony mirrorless cameras, filters/filter holder, 100-400mm, 12-24mm, and 24-70mm lenses, plus the usual stuff (remote, batteries, cards, etc.). Also, which insert do you recommend?
Larry Marshall Photography With your setup I’d say go with the 40L, it’s not an overly large bag and should fit you fine. I use a combination of the medium core unit along with the small - works great👍
I would have added a good rubber padding when placing the bag outdoors upright.

Lukaiel Reece-Sullivan Really appreciate that - glad you enjoyed it! I personally like the Shimoda over the Ajna bag. Both are great, but the Shimoda bag has a couple great features that the Ajna doesn’t like the side opening rear access point and the small pockets on the harness.

Mark, I'm loving the reviews of the Shimoda bags, and am starting small by ordering a core unit and accessory pouch from Shimoda to use in my F-Stop Sukha until I can pick up one of their bags. I really like their philosophy, but one of my pet peeves is yours as well: water bottle carrying. With my Sukha, I attached an old Lowepro pouch capable of carrying a 32 oz Nalgene to the shoulder harness--not an ideal location, and limiting visibility at times, but it works. (F-Stop's water bottle holder looks insufficient.) Have you found a good solution on your Shimoda 40L, please?
Hi, Todd - Ian Miller from Shimoda was telling me about a flex bottle with a tube that others have used in the mesh pocket on the right harness strap. Seems like a good option, but I haven’t purchased one yet.
If the bag had a mesh pocket large enough for a 1.5P bottle on opposite site of tripod to balance the weight of tripod that would have made it a perfect bag
Can we attach a top attachment cover like an Alpine bag and a strap at the bottom for a tent and sleeping bag?

Water bottle vs. bladder: The bladder would be full on the start of your trip, and so would a bottle- so what difference does it make? You aren't picking up things along the way where you would need the space left by the bladder as you drink your water.

I have made up my mind that I shall purchase this photo pack, but not in its present state of its 2 colours which I find horrendous. I've been eyeballing the atlas athlete , 26L mindshift, and this Shinoda...from a price point, the MS is a no brainier, but the non removable hip strap bums me out. I think the Atlas is the only one that has this removable.
I do have to say that it bugs me that new bags are coming out without ICU..I get that it's meant to give you flexibility...but these are camera bags...provide a small ICU and offer options to expand. My 2 cents.
Hello Mark, are the packs heavy? I was thinking about getting the 65 or 40 litre I am 6' 2" would that one fit into a piece of hand luggage to take on board the aeroplane? And.... the issue about the colours of the packs. I find the colours of the packs absolutely disgusting. Is there any plans to use any sensible colours in the future?
which one do you prefer, shimoda or f-stop?
As of right now, I'd have to go with Shimoda. F-stop has the overall better lineup, but Shimoda has the better single bag, IMO.

Hi Mark, does having your 15" Macbook pro in the dedicated laptop sleeve on the back panel effect the comfort of the pack in any way?
Does it make the back panel too rigid or is there plenty of allowance for such things and there's no difference on the back panel against your back?
Hey Stephen! Great question - I was concerned with the same thing when I first saw the design, but you can't tell any difference against your back whether you have a laptop in the sleeve or not. Great design!

are you also going to review the Explore 30? Apparently is just 4cm shorter and all the other dimension stayed the same, so I am really curious to see what is the real difference there! Also, do you know if there is any way to hide the waist belt on the explore 40?
Aldo Costagliola I don’t think so - not sure if the smaller size and removable waist belt is enough difference for another vid. There isn’t a way to hide or remove the belt on the 40 though.

Hi Mark, I'm thinking of getting this bag but the only that is putting me off is the laptop sleeve. You mentioned it can fit your 15 inch mac book but snug. I'm kinda worried since I have an dell xps 15 and it won't fit since it's a little bit thicker your mac book.
Ricky Le It probably wouldn’t fit if it’s thicker, but the new Shimoda Action X collection actually has a 16” laptop sleeve that you might want to check out.

I need a bag big enough for
Nikon D850, Tamron 15-30, Tamron 24-70, 70-200 f2.8 USD and Nikon 200-500 with a filter set. I can barely fit all this in a 20L bag (Lowepro Flipside 20L Sport) so I think in Shimoda it will be an easy fit with Fstop Large ICU equivalent.

In my experience of using dedicated camera bags for 30 years, good as they may be, none of them beat a proper hiking bag for comfort as they utilise a purpose built internal frame that isnt compromised by the rear opening flap. My own has an f stop ICU inside and a little ingenuity allows a tripod to be securely fastened centrally on the outside, not off centre to the side which is bad for stability and the spine.
Mark great video! Have you tried to put a Fstop ICU in this bag? Just for the photographer who's kit won't fit in the medium core unit.

So I tried it out and was surprised how well it fits. I was able to slide the Fstop Large Pro ICU into the Shimoda 40L - perfect fit!

Jordan Burrows As long as the depth of the ICU doesn’t increase and only the length increases it should be fine.
I would ask the guy from Shimoda what the advantage is of the collapsed water bottle space. You allow for it full of water. Theoretically, if you threw away the bottle once finished, what are you going to put in that space? His argument only makes sense until you think about it. Water bladders require alot of maintenance to sanitize. For long hikes in the desert it may be worth it, but not for day trips in Maine.
when you have a heavy bag, all that weight doesn't warp your laptop? Are you worried?....

Unfortunately the NYA-EVO 36 does not open to the side, I think that's really cool with the Shimoda 40 :)

I was looking at the Shimoda bags but having to buy the core separately is just a ripoff. One should be included and if you want a larger/smaller one then they should be made available for an extra purchase. I think I'm going to stick with Lowepro and get the Powder BP 500...I love Lowepro bags and have a few of them...
one more question : Do you think its possible to carry the 60l on an airplane?

Depends on where you are in the world and which airlines. From my experience with cabin baggage in NZ and Australia you my luck out. Recently I have had my cabin size tested and weighed. The cut off in weight was 7kg (about 15.4 pounds) and they were sticking to it. Fortunately my bag (40L) fitted in the measure box, not sure that a 60L one would. When I flew from the UK to Qatar last year they insisted that my laptop went inside my cabin luggage and it was included in my bag weight. I cannot remember which airline it is, but they let you pay extra for a 10kg bag.
I would rather have water bottle holders. I often just want to sit down outdoors with a water bottle in my hand.
Those shoulder straps look awfully thin, lacking padding, which would add significant levels of comfort. That's disappointing for such pricey bag, $340 for the smaller 30L, with a single small sized ICU.
Shimoda backpacks fail at its most basic function. Its very uncomfortable to wear when loaded. I have 60 l, first gen, traveled to Kyrgyzstan, India, Thailand and had to carry everything, including camera and equipment, 15-17kg. Main problem: the rear zipper cuts into my back and I can’t walk any further than 5-10 kilometres. The interior is too loose, camera wobbles and moves around too much. And I have a medium DSLR unit, with a range of lenses. I’m extremely disappointed with shimoda, and I’m not the only one. Having said that, the backpack is a high quality build, it doesn’t scream “expensive inside”, which is a big plus for travellers. Padding is too thin, they should have doubled or tripled it.
Dam this would have been perfect for me except for those leather zip pulls as i'm vegan. Gutted....Great review though.
