  • Jumanji: The Next Level marks the third film in the Jumanji franchise. Or should I say...FOUTH?!? This is our review of the 2005 Jon Favreau sci-fi romp Zathura: A Space Adventure, his precursor to Iron Man and a sequel to the 1995 classic starring Robin Williams. Sort of. It might be a spin-off. We talk about it. Caravan of Garbage. Also baby Yoda Loki.

When I watched this as a kid I think the charm of the film was the fact that it did all take place in one house, it felt like a couple kids playing with their imaginations when their parents aren't home, except instead of it being their imagination it was actually real. Like that blew my mind as a kid, I swear for like a month I just pretended to be playing Zathura and fighting lizard aliens and giant robots.

You can have great "trapped in a bottle" stories, but they require a heavy focus usually on the characters and how they not only deal with the trapped scenario, but also deal with themselves.
I think that's where Zathura really fell flat.

True, I loved this movie as a kid but I hadn't heard of Jumanji. But when I actually went and watched Jumanji I was disappointed, it just didn't have the same feel or impact...
(There's also the fact Space is much more interesting than a jungle, like every kid would want to go to space, but what kid wants to go to a jungle?)

  • @royaltycomics

I have a theory, Zathura *is* Jumanji.
In the Zathura book, they found the Jumanji game and rejected it. Later they found the Zathura game, which has the same properties as Jumanji. Maybe when Jumanji was rejected, it turned itself into a cooler board game, Zathura.
The same thing happened to the board game in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Alex rejected Jumanji and started to play video games. Then the board game turned itself into a video game to entice Alex.

But that’s another technical another sequel book adaption that doesn’t take place in the same universe necessarily.

Honestly, if given the choice between playing Jumanji and Zathura, I would choose Zathura. Mainly, for two reasons:
    1. Everything in Jumanji is actively trying to kill you.
There is no relief, it's just ’Survive and finish the game or die’. In Zathura, yes you're trapped in space, but as long as you stay inside the house, you have gravity, air, etc. Heck, even the Zorgons leave you alone if you hide from them.
    2. The Shooting Star card.
    Need I say more?

"In what universe is there a sequel to a book which they then make into a movie that is not a sequel to the movie made of the first book?"
This was the case with Die Hard! Die Hard was adapted from the book Nothing Lives Forever, which was the sequel to The Detective. A movie was made of The Detective (starring Frank Sinatra) but Die Hard is not a sequel to that movie - for one thing, they changed the protagonist's name. Amusingly, the makers of Die Hard were legally obliged to offer the role to Sinatra first, but thankfully he turned it down on the basis of his being *far* too old.

This actually upsets me that they talk so much shit about the moving taking place in a house. That's part of the magic of the movie. The fact that such a beautiful adventure story could even be written to take place in a house is incredible. The whole point of the movie was to encapture the imagination and creativity that comes with childhood, and I think making the film take place in the house was essential to keeping that innocent, imaginative feel. This wasn't a story about kids exploring the galaxy and it never was meant to be, even if that's what these guys wanted it that way. They might as well bitch about how restricting it was that they were playing a board game or how they were brothers or that there was a small cast or literally anything else. But taking away the essentials out of the movie would have made it something else entirely and if that's what they're really judging Zathura on then they're just comparing it to what they had gone into the theatre expecting to watch while ignoring the fucking GEM that is this movie. Cameron Tankersley out.

  • @Levyathyn
    @Levyathyn Před rokem

I really liked it. And this movie gave me a crush on Kristen Stewart that would last for years, at least enough to get me to watch the first Twilight movie.
I really enjoy that the circumstances of this second movie are much more constrained, and confined, than in Jumanji; That first board game was open, expansive, and spilled out into the real world with quite a lot of space. I think it's a neat contrast that by comparison, Zathura took place in space which is by definition much more open, but was largely confined to a single house. It created this feeling of almost being trapped, and rather than have the people out to live in the real world despite whatever additions it had, able to close the game and walk away from it if they so chose, Zathura kept everyone trapped from the beginning, unable to just leave.
And I think the house was an excellent touch. Aside from just the practical effects, watching the house fall more and more apart added a layer of another sort of dramatic tensions everything, because this was the house you know... This was where everyone was trapped in, this was where everyone was floating through space. So as it fell apart and was besieged more and more as the movie went on, it started feeling more and more like the house itself might not make it, leaving the viewer to question what would happen.
