No-Till Farming and Market Gardening in Zone 5b, 5,200ft (FULL TOUR)

  • On my vacation to Northern California, I found myself in Reno, Nevada with serious gardening withdrawal. I looked up some farms in the area, and messaged Zach of Prema Farms out of the blue. He agreed to have me out to check out the farm, which is in Zone 5b just outside of Reno, Nevada. He's a no-till, certified organic, regenerative farmer making a go of it on 1.5 acres.
I've done farm tours and garden tours before, but never one at altitude. There's a ton to learn about how Zach runs his farm, how lean his market gardening methodology is, and more - I truly hope you enjoy.
With inspiration from Conor Crickmore of Neversink Farm, Eliot Coleman, Jean Martin Fortier, and Curtis Stone, Zach is off to an EPIC first 2 years at Prema Farm.

Thank you. This is so respectful of land, water. I grew up with fruit trees, vegetables, herbs, corn/beans/squash -- seeds saved by grandmother every year from plants her family raised over generations in Mexico. We had enough for us and neighbors. We thought grandmother was old-fashioned and eccentric for composting & refusing to "poison" the land with modern chemicals. The soil was incredibly fertile and generous-- the land was healthy and treated with love. My grandmother would love to see today's generation of farmers that do so much with the land without contaminating it with chemical "poisons."

All professional farmers. People growing for themselves and maybe hitting the farmer's market to get something back for their surplus can still learn something, but his MARKETING know-how: Knowing where the gaps are in the produce supply, like that ?June? hole he found for cucumbers, to land a contract. That's what a person who wants to make a LIVING as a small-plot farmer needs to know.
I love the reverence they have for NeverSink. NeverSink is the jumping-off point for anybody interested in this, the same way the logistic model is the jumping-off point for population studies.

fabulaus! I love supporting small farms!!! The food tastes so much better plus win win! I hope that when people eat, they give gratitude for the food they buy at the grocery store. I prefer farmers markets, but I do what I can living in the city. Farming is extremely hard work and with global warming, its a guessing game at best! I am four years gardening in the city on my patio, and many failures. It takes alot of work, love and science to getting it right! Love and blessings to farmers around the world and much gratitude! Working on my edable and medicinal garden and learning so much.

Thanks for this really informative and good energy from you both. I respect how Kevin(Epic Farm) was very knowledgeable yet still allowed room for explanations and demonstrations from Zack(Perma Farm). I’m in Colorado at a similar altitude, about a mile high, so this was really cool to see. Rarely do these shows that focus on smaller permaculture farms, market gardening, self-sufficient homesteads, that aren’t filmed in southern states like FL, MS, AL, and everything from the soil under feet, to the clouds in the sky, make a huge difference in making decisions, knowing what to decide, depending mostly on the relative geography, climate, topography, and community, to have actual factual relevance, generally what I will have to do as a beginner that will actually benefit me where I’m growing, I still watch a few really good guys from FL that have a plethora of information but not all plants that grow in tropical areas can do the same high/dry altitudes. Im grateful for this and I really hope to see more, respect ✊

Amazing work, INSPIRATIONAL. I'm trying to start a mini "farm" myself with the same approach. The garden will give what will give. Not by forcing it but by allowing it to be what will be. Thank you for showcasing PREMA farms!!! Loved every second of the video. Just wished I lived where the weather was a bit warmer...
