He is the greatest living stand up comedian. Deconstructing comedy in real time.
Stewart Lee is _exactly_ my humour. I rarely get into hysterics, but I am both amused and entertained throughout. How he works the material and makes the audience work twice as hard is, I think, unique.
Stewart Lee is like a magician who tells you he’s going to perform a trick, walks you through the trick, explains how he did the trick, and still leaves you amazed at the trick he just did. Then you realise he was performing half a dozen other tricks while doing it.
Oh, and if you haven’t seen it already you need to watch “Stewart Lee Internet Comments” and wet yourself laughing.
This is so on point.
The "Penn and Teller" of comedy? 👍
The 'Imaginary Wife' bit is brilliant. Lee is one of the best stand up comedians of all time.
He definitely operates at a different level. He's basically playing a character, Stewart Lee the Comedian, who believes he's better than his audience and deserves more recognition hence the bitterness towards all other comedians. He deliberately makes things as awkward and difficult as possible almost as a challenge to lose the audience and then get them back again. There's an amazing clip where he has a full 'breakdown' on stage and starts taliking to the ghosts of dead comedians ... remarkable.
Search for "Stewart Lee playing the room as its dealt" so see the clip mentioned above
@@musicman5075 Thanks, I couldn't remember what it was called when it popped into my head!
It's not an act though? He and his fans obviously see themselves as being more intelligent than the average comedy fan and comedian. It's very tiresome, how do people sit through whole shows of it? Well because they are smug pretentious bells that like the smell of their own excrement I can only assume.
@@firstanon6655 but at least you’re not bitter 😂
@@sargonsblackgrandfather2072 It's all an act so don't worry.
Stewart Lee is unique in comedy. He will play the audience against each other and split them in half praising one and putting down the other half. What he does is very clever
He wrote a segment in his TV show about James Corden thinking he's brilliant (James had said that Stewart was his favourite comedian) and he equated it to a dog listening to classical music, in interviews afterwards he said he thought the funniest reaction to hearing someone admires you is to show disdain and hatred for them, so so funny... I'd love to see you react to a full stand up show one day, he's done several and they're all brilliant, his TV show which is a series of 30min stand up routines shot in what looks like a small jazz bar is brilliant too, it was called Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle and ran for 4 seasons with a total of 24 episodes.
The toilet book bit is great but you'd sort of need to know who Chris moyles is
I think it was a clown listening to classical music...or i might be thinking of another comedian.
@@elainekerslake6865 It's dog, the clip is on CZcams
Our loss is America’s loss also 😂
“I forgot that he makes stuff up”
Did boomer think he had really taken a pirate on a date? 😂
Arrrrgghh
@@KingBoomer Great pirate talk there! Also, I love that CZcams offered to translate that into English. And it was exactly the same. Then offered to show me the original in case I was missing it. It's mind-blowing how technology has improved our lives.
..and a one-legged pirate, with an eye patch, as well
..and a one-legged one with an eye patch, to boot!
You mean, he didn't? Well, that's just ruined this clip.
I’ve seen Stewart Lee live doing his Cafe Nero loyalty card routine. Basically the premise is that of you get 9 stamps from previous purchases, you get your 10th coffee free. But when he finally filled his card, the coffee shop refused to honour it, because they said some of the stamps were in the “wrong” colour. What were they accusing him of? Going to all the trouble of carving a perfect counterfeit stamp, but then being so careless as to use a completely different ink colour? Of course, being Stewart Lee, he spins it out to a 20 minute routine …
What I love about Stewart Lee is the way he deconstructs his act even as he's delivering it. I've brought that into my own fiction writing. This guy is a genius. It was a homemade giant Cafe Nero loyalty card. You need to see the whole routine
Love Stewarts work, truth is his shows are usually best watched as a whole piece, as lots of callbacks and show requires him to build and break the audience. great bodies of work.
It's called Brechtian Alienation. You unsettle the audience by attacking them, or you set one part of the audience up as the good guys and the rest are the bad guys. He uses it to fantastic effect. Watch his full stand up, "Content Provider" or "Tornado Snowflake".
yes they are masterful I especially like content provider.
You have to watch the whole thing!
I actuall took a coach load of afro carribean elders to the old then the new slavery museum in Liverpool. There were no complaints and full coaches so the selfish bloody pirate should stop complaining . You go Stu. Bloody pirates.
I saw Stewart Lee's shows twice in the same day at the Edinburgh Fringe and got a photo with him. He's a master. It was the only show I've seen where there were countless famous comedians in the crowd, they massively respect him as one of the best.
You either get him or you dont. Love him or hate him. I personally think one if his best bits is his Ang Lee routine. Its so clever
He started out in the 90's as part of a double act with Richard Herring who is also a unique comic talent, they were both writers on the radio show 'On The Hour' where Alan Partridge made his first ever appearance, the show was hosted by Chris Morris who played Reynholm in The IT Crowd and it was that radio show which went on to become the TV show 'The Day Today' which I know you're regularly asked to react to. Richard Herring has a very popular podcast which is also filmed in a theatre called rhlstp (how to pronounce it is a long running joke in the show), he's interviewed many comedians you love on there like Greg Davies and it's a lot of fun, well worth you checking out I'd say.
The RHLSTP pronunciation gag is actually a callback to an earlier Lee And Herring project, This Morning With Richard Not Judy, pronounced TMWRNJ (all up on youtube)
@@bareakon I loved that show too but didn't want to go back that far with Boomer just yet, trying not to overcomplicate things! I rewatched Fist of Fun just the other week too, also brilliant!
The card was in reference to those loyalty cards you get from some outlets (in this case Café Nero) where they give you a sticker every time you buy a coffee and get a free coffee when the card is full of stickers.
Stewart Lee's Top Gear rant is the funniest stand up I have ever seen.
So weirdly cut, this one. But the whole comedy special is one of the best pieces of stand up you'll ever see.
Stewart Lee is the Dogs Bollocks 😅
Minus the dogs.
Nah, he's the mutts nuts 🐶🥜
Lee's wife, the delightful, Bridget Christie, is also a stand up comedian who deliberately bills herself as a 'feminist comedian' to wind up some members of an audience. She is very good.
You want the moon on a stick.
If the audience is behind you, you're facing the wrong way
He also writes an excellent news paper article mainly about the politics that week for the guardian which comes out most Sundays. Very funny commentary.
Caffé Nero is a chain of coffeehouses from the UK, the bit in that section is that he got a loyalty card where the baristas would stamp an “n” for each purchased drink and once the card is full you can trade it in for a free or discounted drink - since a real loyalty card is too small for an audience to make out the discrepancy that is the subject of the gag (different coloured stamps) he creared a large cardboard mockup of the card to show everyone instead.
Yes yes please. The one thing i wish there was more of on CZcams is Stewart Lee reaction
I love how he owns the moment. its like breaking the 4th wall but for live standup
Lee is amazing. He plays the Audience like a fiddle.
Now that you've finished IT Crowd, try checking out Snuff Box "The Boyfriend sketches". You'll recognise the actor in them..
Yes.
Darkplace also
100%.both great shows.
its a cafa nero reward card
Haven’t been here in a while… but, if I see Stewart Lee, I click!
He’s the only comedian that’s ever made an audience pretend to get his jokes so they don’t feel silly.
I think Carpet Remnant World is probably his best polished stand up that everyone can get into, well worth a watch.
His latest 2, Snowflake and Tornado, are first class!
Stewart Lee is intelligent, astute, hilarious, and sharp as a tack. Got to see him live earlier this year in Wrexham, and it was fascinating to watch his thought process in real time.
This is a good example of why context matters, and with Stewart Lee it's notably important. You really experience him best in full. Honestly, see a full show, you'll be rewarded. Also, as to the audience being made to feel awkward.....We are in on the joke.
Stewart lee has let himself go like a cider made from pears
Give it to me straight
ONE of my all time personal faves is Stewart, everything I have seen of his has had me doubled up with laughter, you really need to watch a full show, the guy is a legend he goes back decades, there are videos of him as a much younger man out there but even back then he was clearly a VERY talented comedian, do yourself a favour and watch a full show.
Harry Hill - Britain's greatest living shirt collars. Gave Al Murray his first job as "Big Brother Alan" in his stage show.
Saw him live earlier this year, he is brilliant.
The Shilbottle bit is a great one for a Stewart Lee reaction, about 15 mins long and it stands on its own without needing to watch the whole show leading up to it
I agree. It is one of the few clips that can stand alone.
Stewart Lee's Braveheart sketch is a must watch
Yeah, as others have said... you need to watch/react to a full gig. Each one comes together and completes as a masterpiece. And the dig at Michael McIntyre in not a brief one-off... Lee absolutely slaughters him in other bits and in other gigs.
Seen him live 3 times and his shows are always excellent from start to finish. Love that he slams McIntyre...and us audience members! The Cafe Nero (a coffee chain) bit was used to open the show and the pirate bit came later before he returned to the coffee bit. He had more anti-McIntyre stuff later, including the great line about the audience queuing up to buy his DVD, "like captured partisans digging their own mass grave".
TOAST OF LONDON.
SORRY FOR SPAMMING BUT YOU AND QUEEN NEED TO GET ON THAT.
SECONDED!
THIRDED!!
FORTHIED!!!
FIFTHDED, SIXTHDED & SEVENTHDED!
Stewart Lee loves to roast the audience. And he does it in such a subtle and entertaining way. He reminds me of my friends in England roasting each other in the pub. It's a very English form of sarcasm.
Stewart's attitude to other comedians is rooted in his 'punch up' philosophy. He shows absolute disdain for comedians who are more successful than him, and is complimentary about those who are less successful. In reality he is a comedy fan (except for Ricky Gervais, he doesn't seem to like him).
It is true to say he presents himself - not even presents really - as a kind of outsider. There's a whole sequence in his stand-up much more recently where he sends up the notion of people 'saying the unsayable' or people who claim to be 'Cancelled' and yet have their own Netflix comedy special. In fact his comedy is probably more about comedy than the subject matter itself.
Stewart's actually a lovely man. Makes very clear that "The Comedian Stewart Lee" is a character he plays onstage.
He always runs straight to the foyer after his shows to sell and sign books and DVDs.
Went to see him back in March and had a great night, the second time I've seen him Live.
An unsung master of comedy!
At the end section, the cardboard prop was a replica of a Caffé Nero loyalty card - where they stamp the card each time you buy a coffee. Once you filled the card with ink stamps you get a free coffee. In this skit, 2 were a different colour from the rest. He's discussing the interaction with the server when he claims his free coffee. Are the blue stamps legit or had he faked the 2 remaining stamps? 😂 The ridiculous lengths over such a petty reward is what's funny alongside the frustration of having to fill a loyalty card.😢
At his best, Stewart Lee IS the best.....
41st best! but he's let himself go.
he really isn't
I like stewart lee my favourite skit is the one where he talks about buying a bottle of wine and the person serving says he has good taste.....
Harry Hill is a nutcase comedian - and a doctor. So may are so well educated!
1 of my fave stewart lee bits!
About time you got back to Stew. Its been a while. You'd like Audience Analysis In Sheffield... and also Joe Pasquale Joke (From Edinburgh..)
I love Stewart Lee. His stand-up style is so dry. He's the comedian who will deliberately ruin the delivery of a joke, then make out it's the audience's fault the joke failed . . . But the whole time, his quite deliberately constructed 'ad lib ranting' about how the joke was actually very clever and the audience are letting him down, is some of the funniest stuff you will ever hear.
He is the master of setting himself and the audience up for 'failure', and making it feel hilariously authentic whilst that was his plan all along.
I can recommend his rants on Brexit & Trump; his UKIP (coming over here) rant and; his 'Pear cider made from 100% pear(s)'.
That was a very strangely edited clip. Both those pieces, especially the Nero routine, have more to them. The Nero routine on it's own is at least 15-20 minutes long, and it's brilliant.
Others will have said this I'm sure, but his material works best when not chopped up too much.
Please react to "Stewart Lee playing the room as it's dealt" - it's one of the best Stewart Lee CZcams clips!
He's the only comedian that lambasts his audience for laughing 😆. It's pure art.
Cafe Nero is a Coffee outlet, like Starbucks
You really need to watch a whole show - pretty much everything he says needs the context.
Harry Hill sitting on the dock of the bay, only two minutes, I think you’ll love it.
Stewart Lee - Internet comments is really good

Stewart Lee's 'Braveheart' Routine is a 'Must Watch'
Saw him live last week lol. He's great.
Stewart Lee is a favourite of mine
Seen him a live a few times. He's brilliant. And really, really funny.
Stewart Lee on Bin Laden is a must watch
These days, you get arrested and thrown in jail if you say you're english, don't you?
No you don't
Maybe here (Ireland) lol
I'm English, you more-on
Really? Just for saying you’re English!?
@HistoritorJimaldus yes! these days...
Stewart Lee: The Audience is the Problem
on the channel Comedy Without Errors explains the techniques he uses really well.
My old headmaster's son is Richard Herring his comedy partner.
It’s well worth checking out his full sets which are obviously quite long. You should watch some episodes of his series “Comedy Vehicle” there only about 30mins long pretty much a short standup routine with a couple of clips here n there.
I adore Michael M. Seen him live three times and he is brilliant
You _need_ to watch him read his "internet comments" routine - it'll kill you!
"This ... from Mumsnet ..." in context, is the most pants-pissingly funny two seconds in all of history.
Saw him recently in his latest tour. He’s still got it.
Cafe Nero is a coffee shop chain.
He was holding a rewards card.
Buy 10 get 1 free sort of thing.
It's the end of the Caffe Nero sketch - a real hoot. Do the pears cider sketch.
The things to keep in mind is that there are 2 Stewart Lee’s:
1) The real Stewart Lee, and;
2) The character of Stewart Lee.
90% of stand up is the Character, but every now and again there is a genuine reaction with the real Stewart Lee coming through
Caffe Nero, refering to Discount rewards for his Coffee
Lee is a great standup storyteller, some of his full shows are legendary the way he drags a topic out is a true skill. Checkout is stand up show about immigration 😂
I quite enjoyed Stewart Lees early shows. I still use his moon on a stick line. As a comedic writer, he's pretty inspired. As a personality, I find him really smug and unrelatable.
Interesting no-one was excited to tell you about Harry Hill. His shirt collars are comically large.
Stuart Lee is a comedy genius, by far the best UK stand up of the last 20 years.
His best stand up skit was the one about Russel Howard from the show Stuart Lees Comedy vehicle, but it seems to have vanished from CZcams. There is another one thats good and its him attacking James Cordon which is also excellent ! 😂
I saw him on TV once. He was trying, in every sense of the word.
Dry British Humour at its very very best.
Stewart Lee is the greatest
Others have mentioned it’s best to watch the whole show. All the routine is interwoven from the start with call backs etc.
The cafe Nero bit is out of context. I met Stew a few years ago and he knew my band which I was impressed by. He also picked on me from the stage which was embarrassing.
Half the commenters who insist British comedy is more intelligent than American go on to recommend Gimme Gimme Gimme and Mrs Brown's Boys.
But if such an argument really can be made well, then it must involve Lee.
I would hope anyone who says that is doing a massive p***take! (the first bit, not the second)
For what it's worth, I'm on KBs Patreon and I'm not saying I've got a huge amount of clout but I've done my best to veto MBB and GGG from any and all polls so hopefully, NONE of us should ever have to suffer that shit! 😄
@@dannythedoodle You're doing the Lord's work.

"The trouble with you Americans, is you don't have a sophisticated sense of humor. Have you even heard of 'Man About The House'? You haven't got a clue." --Alan Partridge (in 'Knowing Me, Knowing You') 😂
Watch the hole thing..then it all works out. Hes the best
You gotta love Stewart Lee and he certainly has the measure of cackintyre. He's as funny as a bomb threat in a cancer hospice
He is unique. His worst case of disrespecting his audience can be seen in "Rap Singers". He repeats the same few phrases for nearly an hour!!
I think that's the skit that ultimately made me severely dislike him.
But the joke would't work if he'd just said it once and then "this book's not really aimed at me". Plus we've all heard old people going all round the houses to try and remember a name.
He has a massive go at Richard Hammond from top gear and another one he takes the piss out joe Pasquale for stealing a joke
Stewart Lee can be funny but sometimes watching him is like riding a train that keeps getting stopped by signal failures only to reach your destination that you weren't mad about going to in the first place.
You can tell Steward and Gervais used to work together, this could've straight up been a David Brent skit. Even down to the mannerisms.
If you want to know what the Caffe Nero thing was about, react to "Stewart Lee - lazy man". Also recommended by him: "car phone warehouse" and "these days if you say you're English".
The cafe Nero bit I think was about him having filled the card to get a free coffee, that being his big mock up of the real card, and the barrista accusing him of cheating.
I don't get the dislike for Michael McIntyre. I love him. I have been to see him twice. I like Stuart Lee too, but not a whole show at a time.
In my opinion SL doesn't really despise MM, that's just part of his "failed comedian, bitterly jealous of a successful one" routine. There's another "bit" where he has a go at Graham Norton, along much the same lines. Some youtube viewers seem to think it's real, though, and take sides 🙂To make it clear, I'm not having a go at you; you seem to have got the joke.
