About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
thanks, Glenn! The neck problem has been solved btw ;)
Glad to hear it!!!
Now that was fast :D
And… what exactly did you do? What was the fix? Please elaborate.
Did you move “both” strap buttons? What about that input Jack? (Still working on that fix right?)
Can we get an update on this? Please and thank you?
good news man
oh well, i'm not triggered in any way by this video. But well, I'm Polish :D
The visual effects on the guitar are really cool, but you should stop em when you're starting to do the review. I'd like to see the actual guitar. Cheers mate
no shit
To be fair if a guitar showed that Transformers the movie clip it would be instant bought lol.
maybe that's a secret
I wouldn't be surprised if Glenn were required to not fully reveal the guitar due to some nda-type contract, I dunno, maybe this is a brand new prototype, but judging from the shape, it looks very similar to what they already sell on their website
You can see it at the very end.
It would have been nice to see what the guitar ACTUALLY looked like.
The editor needs to chill
Less is more! All Bass players know this!
I've suggested Ritalin to him several times, but he ignores it!!!!😂😂😂😂
Why? Two seconds from the end he realized that 13 minutes and 20 seconds is the perfect duration for this effect. ;)
Yeah he does
The overuse of that cheesey effect on the guitar killed this video..! So bad, it remined me of Homer Simpson making Ned Flanders a dating profile video with tons of "Star Wipes."
Dude.. why all the cartoons on the guitar?
Why not
@@sog6289 Because we didn't get to see what the guitar actually looks like.
@@GToW-B Probably because it's like the yellow ones? A proper guitar should be black. Lol. All mine are.
@@GToW-B it was blue at the end
@@sog6289 it was also blue during unpacking, but yeah
Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should. Thst distracting effect on the guitar wears out it's welcome after 10 seconds but is on almost the whole video.
I don't understand why we couldn't see the actual finish of the guitar until a half second before the end.
It's a May Fool's joke...
@@Dm3qXY well that's stupid.
@@HabAnagarek i do not disagree
Would’ve been nice to see what the guitar actually looks like
Yes.
13:20
Uhh... How do I activate the guitar screen setting on my guitar? I want to watch anime on my guitar, too. Is this a Ruf guitar exclusive, or can my Ibanez do this?
Anime then Beavis and Butt-Head theme at 2:52, Butt-Head Vegeta approves.
The intro with the guitar's effects was cool but all I see is you advertising a guitar-shaped green screen the rest of the video
Ya, so I’m the guy who thought that the guitar body actually had some sort of built in screen surface throughout the neck and body that allowed video to be fed into it and displayed. I only realized it was a Glenn editing trick when I went on Ruf website and said, “where’s the screen guitar!?” Yes, I am that gullible, and apparently also that ignorant on the state of the art of tech (but that COULD be possible, right?). I’m kinda confused why he decided to do the visual stuff w/o mentioning it at all in the video, and never actually getting to see real paint job of the guitar being reviewed…
He actually does mention "the blue screen finish" at about 12:42ish, at almost the very end of the video.
I think a guitar could actually be built like that
Hey I quit dating my cousins a long time ago but I still drive a pick up truck and jam to SLAYER.
Even God listens to Slayer
@@charlesrocks It's remarkable because God hates us all.
Best response ever.
@@Jayteaseepiirturi....I like a good joke.
But when I read the New Testament where I read "God so loved the world He gave His Son" (Gospel of John) I believe otherwise.
Blessings, may God increase your guitar skills so that when I tell you the IV chord walks to a minor7 flat 5 you don't look lost. ( I edited this just for Jay)
@@rustyshackleford9557 Either you're missing punctuation or I'm missing something else.
so the anime effects affect the tone?
THREE FUCKING GRAND!!!!!! Jesus Glenn. Too bad the colour is so bad you have to hide it. Also don't RUF customise Porsches?
Of course, they do. Poles are good with german stuff. They even put the iron cross on the fretboard on some models
Labor is expensive. $3000 only seems like a lot because we don't get paid enough ourselves. If all of our money wasn't being syphoned to the top and you were actually paid what you were worth, then you'd be able to afford such a guitar, and support good jobs while doing it.
@@MichaelSheaAudio where, in Poland? I think the most expensive part is that "Ruffaine Plain" material. 3k may be a good price for hq acoustic guitar, but it's too much for a windowsill with strings imo.
@@mayak_85 Definitely, the materials are a factor as well. In their own "about us" video on their website, he mentions that they're a new company, and have mechanical and aerospace engineers, as well as guitar techs and luthiers. These are jobs that demand high pay. If they're good at their jobs, then they will need to be paid well and it will add to the cost of the guitars. And a quick Google search shows that Poland has one of the highest minimum wages in Central and Eastern Europe, and another search shows that the cost of living is almost 60% lower than in the United States.
@@MichaelSheaAudio"About us" often is a bunch of nonsense for those who don't know how guitars are built. Mister, I am a qualified woodworker, I play selfmade electrics (acoustic is in building process) and I really can say that building solidbody/chambered guitar is easy. Good paintjob is the most difficult imo. On the second place is binding job. For example, making a table with carved by hand cabrioli legs is much more difficult. On factories lot's of job is done by cnc machines. I agree with you, good job gotta be paid well, cuz getting experience takes lots of time and lots of mistakes done and some materials wasted. But again, making electric guitar doesn't need lots of skills.
I assume you mean the old, established brand names of American guitars. There are artisanal builders all over the country
You get to see the actual guitar in the very last second of the video
Would love to see the actual finish on that guitar. Apparently it was greenscreen green.
That whole-guitar blue is really sharp! Given the prices I saw online for Ruf's guitars, given the not-so-minor flaws, and given your actual final rating is 3.75/5, I really think the tone of this video would have been much different had you paid for the guitar. I think your review is honest, and I really appreciate that, but the overall excitement and kudos in this vid is why I don't really trust sponsored reviews. I much, much prefer your "I paid for this" reviews (of which there are many, I know), and hope you continue to do more of them!
As soon as i started watching i heard a giant noise! I jumped, turned around and my kiesel and Gibson were broken on the ground. Damn it glen!
The bosses overseas are making 10000 times their employees lmao
Damn, American guitar builders are definitely finished this time. They've been threatened, doomed, annihilated, obliterated, destroyed, and now crushed all in the last year alone!
Holy shit a guitar made out of green screen! (On a side note is this making fun of those low attention span videos? If so thats pretty ingenious lmao)
It's actually made out of blue screen if you watch to the end.
@@icebalm Lol I closed the video RIGHT before it showed the wood
I love the fact that you are so encouraging with this new company: that's what a company dealing with quality products needs desperatly
- Hey Joe what do you think of this guitar?
- I don't know I kinda feel like watching The Transformers.
People are gonna be so mad when they get a guitar that isn't also a tv
How many times have we heard this same thing a million times!?!?
Exactly
exactly
And hate watchers like me
You just answered your question.
And it’s never true
I actually though the guitar had some kind of effect on it for a good second
2 seconds (literally two) in and the WARNING at the beginning is PERFECT.
Welp, now I regret defending Glenn against people saying this is a guitar review channel! 😬
Priceless- Glenn realising this sounds different to a solid wood guitar but can’t go back on his tonewood argument 😂
Perfect. Tone composite, that will give tone wood a run for its money.
When we're looking for cleans we want to hear the likes of The Call Of Ktulu, One and something more modern like the cleans in Drain of Incarnation by Archspire. Metal cleans, not some country twang. Heck, even Slayer have cleans in Seasons In The Abyss, Spill The Blood and 213!
Edit: overall I love the review of the guitar especially the strap positioning and what it's like to play standing up and sitting down - the first things I look for in a guitar if deciding whether to buy or not. I wouldn't because of the neck dive and jack position but, other than that, it looks like a great guitar.
I agree with other comments, i enjoyed the video but would prefer if the graphics could stop eventually - I’d like to see the instrument
Just to say that I subbed, your channel is cool and funny and informative, good work! :D
I've got a custom built Jazzmaster I'm currently paying on. Just under $1100 US. The guy who built it does a lot of cutsom builds that end up in this particular store all the time. By the worksmanship, he really seems to care about the little details. The only piece of wood he didn't build was the neck. He got a made in mexico fender neck for $300. The fender USA Necks cost $500.
I'm getting a drop dead sexy one of one for roughly half the price of a new gibson. I'd say the real prize is finding a truly passionate builder who cares about what they're making
At this point Glenn is just trolling all the 'Made in US or bust-heads' and I love it 😂
why did you use VE on the guitar? is the color not one you could buy when these come out? just curious. cuz its cool and all but yeah lol
I like the effects on the guitar. But gotta wonder why you never turned them off and let us see the actual guitar in a review.
I don't know about the ruffaine but the richlite should be a thing in most fretboards, instead of that dry light brown pau ferro or laurel that looks like sheeat.
Someone has. A new editing toy
What colour is that guitar that the greenscreen effect works perfectly?!
Nice guitars, I heard a lot of good things about the brand. Sometimes I think certain guitar shapes especially ones with very light bodies would benefit as a headless design. What is the actual color of the guitar, I assume green because of the graphics playing thru the vid.
13:20 if you want to see the guitar's paint
Im wondering if what you said about the upper strap pin issue is because they made a mold and tried to make it so they could do left - and right-handed models out of the same mold.
Interesting stuff man
Curious to see where this company goes in the future.
On a side note, your videos on speakers and guitar tone have been very helpful and have saved me a ton of money.
Can you do a similar breakdown on the differences speakers/amps make for bass tone?
Keep rocking and many thanks
I clicked for the guitar, and stayed to watch a full Transformers episode on it.
Great idea for how to show copyrighted video without getting striked! I've been so fortunate that none of my guitars have neck dive, even my bass! It would drive me up the wall if they did, I've always considered it a major flaw in a guitar, and I'm glad you take that into consideration too.
I don't think practice makes perfect; practice makes better. You're killing it.
As much as I loved all the fun 1st gen Transformers footage and all the other graphics cast upon the instrument, it would've been great to actually see the "flawless finish". Other than that, cool demo.
Love this review, however, because I feel that competition is better for the customer. I would love to hear your thought on Ruf Guitars vs Aristides Guitars.
Would have been nice to see the actual guitar at one point (more than 3 seconds at the end)... I lost interest 3 minutes into the review and fast forward.
Yeah, the visual effect on the guitar was cool for the first 30 second. Then it just became an annoying distraction. You get to see it's real colour and the cut, at the last couple second of the video.
Love the video overlays on the guitar but can you actually show us what the guitar looks like?
I feel your pain with the strap pins. Had to change it on my Washburn V from the upper side to one of the four bolts. Now it behaves more like a normal guitar with a strap on (giggity).
GLENNNN! Boot to the head for the Doctor Demento reference, sir.
And a second boot to the head for all the Mike Judge show theme songs. Love it.
Great video as always, bro!
Did Rick Dees rip off that bit? 'Cause that's what came to mind.
the blue screen finish is pretty cool, but the graphics all video were a bit much.
They seem fine, but the prices are eye watering! At $3k, they're competing with fully custom luthier built here (UK). So it'd be a no for me at this point.
OMG Glen this is amazing levels of trolling even for you. bravooooo. i can't wait for the follow up video, you made my day man.
Man your playing has improved so much in the last couple years. Good work man! You're almost ready to rip a Pantera solo for Ola and get a free solar guitar!
We need actual numbers Glenn. How low is the no buzz low action? I'm a low action junkie and I need to know.
Love my fender ultra lux silver burst with the Floyd rose. It’s My favorite guitar now. Worth every penny
I ordered a Ruf after seeing your first video. It was on display at their stand this year. Amazing guitar, the folks at Ruf went above and beyond what I was looking for. I will order another soon.
I'm from Poland and i didn't know this company at all. I'm happy they send you guitars for review. Looks like they are build very solid, but way to expensive for me. I love your honest reviews, and your tip about using Pultec EQ from Ignite Amps was a game changer for me. Thank You for sharing so much useful knowledge for free.
P.S. I was in Canada in 2002 in Toronto for two weeks during summer and to this day i love Canada, i hope one day i will be able to visit it one more time 🙂
The effect on the guitar is pretty cool. But I have no idea what it looks like.
Am I the only one who thinks that the animation on the guitar through full episode was a fun idea? That's kinda the thing you can do with blue screens in darker spaces.
And BTW RUF rules! Amazing looks and amazings specs from Poland. Dziękuję RUF 🤘🏻
"If you're into dating your cousin" made me LOL. I needed that laugh. Thanks, Glenn.
Glenn and the hydraulic press channel?? Dreams do come true!!! 😀
Most guitar builders start by making the best quality, and expensive instruments they can, and once they have everyones attention, they introduce the “affordable” made in the far east versions. I have a B&G and a G&L and a Gretsch that are affordable copies of the ones that I will buy when I win the lottery. But I still love playing them, because the DESIGN is good.
I love that you actually are trying to get better at playing the guitar, Legit I can see the work you put in Glenn. Thank you for shooting straight and putting in the effort, also thanks for saving me money, Shout out from South Florida.
I like the addition of edge of break up not need but cool that you added it. But I’m truly here to see what’s gonna make a difference for metal and hard rock. Let me say that this guitar is sick, one blue, two I like sustainability over anything else so this ticks boxes for me. I’m gonna definitely look for one these. Thanks Glen have a good day and keep up the work
0:20 no truer words have ever been spoken... "nothing motivates a worker to build quality, like knowing your boss makes like 400 times what you make". This CEO greed, and plundering of a companies security safety nets in the name of making shareholders more money wasn't always like this... it started in the 90s, it's f'ing disgusting.
Kmac2021 did one on why he picked a green guitar from whatever company it was. Same idea, but green screened.
That was hilarious to finally show it right at the end.
The Ruff guitar looks Like a Washburn Parallaxe without the Stephen’s extended cutaway! I Love My Parallaxe
If they sold these bad boys for like under 2200 than i would totally buy one
I said "Large orange drink." with you.🤣
Love the finish! Just hope the lighting won’t wake me up at night!!! 😂
Maybe the guitar overlay effects were done to get you to stop shopping with your eyes. Or maybe I’m wrong. I’m usually wrong. 😂
yes there are some great companies over seas and Canada that are offering great quality for a great price, however , dont under estimate American guitar builders. im not talking about fender or Gibson, im referring to people that work out of their garage that aren't building guitars for bulk sale . there are a lot of unknown luthiers that can do the same as the over seas brands. same thing with amp builders. by the way, thats a badass Flying V .
Glen bro, you are very good at the guitar; which speaks volumes for your skills as a recording engineer, as you consider your guitar playing skills second to your recording ones.
At least i know it's green hahah i live this already. Gonna check if they make a 7 string model.
This channel gradually becomes a Mike Judge OST channel
I didn't know I had epilepsy until this video Glenn!
I wonder what it looks like
You can put subway surf over a guitar to keep us occupied
Poland? Wow! They are not cheap, I see prices in the $1700+ range, buuuuut...the sustain is really good, and the build quality looks/sounds good so far...but that neck dive jeeez
God bless..if anyone questions the link in the chain that most effects tone being the speaker i suggest this: i have an old Peavey Ultra. The one that was the basic starting point when they began developing the 5150. I replaced the HORRRIFIC Sheffield speakers in the stock 4x12 with two vintage 30s and two Greenbacks. Holy shit. It is the equivelant of taking your plain looking girlfriend to the beauty salon and having her walk out transformed into Abella Danger. It is easily that exciting.
I would imagine that Ruf would not be too pleased that for most of the video Glenn is seen playing a cartoon instead of showing their guitar.
I feel like I've seen this title before
Also, you know we're all here for King Of The Hill at this point
Thanks for the review.
While I can’t speak to the fellow Dad rockers out there, I’ll have to stick with my $2000 Heritage H150 (Les Paul) rather than shell out the cash for a $3100 Ruf guitar. But that’s just me.
Let me explain:
Being a dad rocker some of the features that are important to us old dudes is the neck size and shape. Too thin of a neck combined with the flat fretboard radius makes these arthritic hands sore thinking about it.
I have to use the chunkier necks to fit my hands and bigger body guitars to attempt to hide my Dad-bod gut.
Lover your show, keep on shredding out the videos!
Love the graphics!! So cool!
That blue screen effect was ok for the first 10 seconds or so but after that it was annoying as fuck.
It would be great to see what the fucking guitar looks like.
Thanks for giving us some actual background on that guitar Glenn
The final blue of the guitar just looks incredible!
Top riff playing. I need top fret markers tho.
And i actually love dimarzio's lol
The biggest expense in manufacturing is labor. If you offshore manufacturing you can cut your coasts by half. So important guitars are always going to be cheaper even if the quality control remains the same. An American manufacture can’t compete on price. They compete with name recognition, collectability, nostalgia and uniqueness. As long as there are people who want that those manufactures stay in business. I worked in a vintage guitar shop. Our biggest customers were rich foreigners who were collectors. I can honestly say not all vintage Gibson’s and Fenders are that good.
Great video. Seems some people didn't watch all the way to the end though. I was worried you weren't going to show it.
You build a guitar that displays visuals like that and I'll pay Gibson prices for it.
