About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
Dude, the day you get through Cowboys From Hell, I’m personally sending you a Type X guitar. You’re getting good fast man!
That's one hell of an incentive to practice!!
Can we get a s by solar type x please?
@OlaEnglund looks like the solar website is down. Are there any 7 strings in the new budget line / how much are they?
Old, dude, did we break your website?
Yo, Några planer på att göra en S By Solar G modell?
“this one’s made from Paul Reed Smith’s sock drawer” 😂😂😂 we need more of this dude!
Agreed. He's funny as 🤣🤣
I about spit coffee all over my screen when he said that. That guy was awsome!!
Truly LMAO. New regular feature please 🤣🤣
gold!!
PRS has a whole cheap line that are excellent (I have a $700 guitar from them that is my daily go-to). And an even cheaper line ($400) that are also supposed to be spectacular for the money (but I don't own one, so I don't know). So picking on them is bullshit. Know your shit before you embarrass yourself. Seriously.
I don't know who Guitar Gandolf is, but we need more of him.
Everytime he talked I started laughing
Jesus Glen I was absolutely not ready for how awesome this video was. Love the setup you have going on now, Nigel is effing GOLD, and I like that overhead cam a lot. The laugh and smile I absolutely needed today. Thanks to G, Z, and anyone else involved for the greatness. Rock on 🤘🤘
Thanks, Nicholas! We’re put a LOT into this one!
@@SpectreSoundStudioshey brother how do i submit a song that i made to you? i followed some of your tips on song writing a little while ago and some stuff just came to me overtime. it’s a bass only demo and it’s 3 minutes
@@SpectreSoundStudios This was quality. Love your stuff anyway but this was next level. Editor has earned his corn on this one.
I really don't know why I didn't subscribe before but now I'm in the right side of the group, I've been watching these videos nonstop this past week even if I don't play or record metal but paying attention to some simple tips has already made a huge difference in the latest thing I mixed, and it's so refreshing to just know it's a snob free no b.s. space. Cheers man!
Thanks for subscribing! I really do appreciate it!
Well, I know why I unsubscribed. Shouting for days on end, blaming influencers and "people on the internet" while being a CZcamsr himsef. Sh*tting on 5150 + v30's while his favorit tone is the In Flames Clayman album (5150 + v30's). All these CZcams stars go on holidays together (That's Stevie T included), I really hope you don't think you're getting an honest review here. Still have to come across the first Solar that doesn't have crappy electronics, scratching pots etc.
That's one thing I've always loved about your channel...the finger-in-the-air, no bullshit reviews. You're not only helping noobs, but also us old ass guitarists make some informed choices about the gear that catches our attention. It's appreciated more than you know.
aside from the fact that his guitar purchases are based on online sales only I can agree with that. It deserves to be mentioned that great examples of any guitar can be found blemish free from your local guitar store... even Gibsons. you just have to get off your asses to buy them.
We old ass guitarists should unionize... : )
I think Solar guitars is one of those brands that just really understands who they are, who their clients are, and what makes a guitar great. These cheaper models are so sensible and they don't really compromise on anything that might be prohibitive to buy. I like that Ola said "it has to be great at all prices, but it doesn't have to be the highest price" without actually having to say it and decided to prove it instead. There's a lot of shame and shade going to the rest of the industry just by proving that you don't have to spend $$$$ to get something worth having.
I got this feeling that is the same company and same workers dude who made that solar guitar and Harley Benton guitar 😂😂
great point. Ola lives it, gigging and doing music all the time. He wouldn't put out a guitar he wouldn't want to play. That may be a little known 11th Commandment; "Thou shalt not make a shitty guitar". God loves music.
Hey Glenn, really like the progress you are getting with your playing. One advice I can give for your vibrato. I notice you do the push pull with one finger. If you want a smoother vibrato, keep your middle and index finger on the string to help support the ring finger in pushing the string. You'll find yourself using less force and will have better control on the string... Keep up the good work. Always a pleasure to watch your honest content.
Yep! I’ll work on that! Ty for the advice!
damn glen, i've been watching you for 7 years now. it's crazy how far you and your production has come. absolutely loving the new setup you have going and editing!!
great edit this time around! Love the SFX, cutaways, music, and overall vibe. Definitely a step up glenn! Hire this person more and give them a raise kay thanks!
❤
Love the vibes your studio has Glen. Awesome content thank you for providing us with great vids!!
Spectre, love the presentation quality and editing - so good man!
I have a Solar V and I totally love it. I just picked up a S by Solar last week, but it's a "surprise" Christmas gift so I need to wait a couple weeks to open it.
Oh damn! That’s going to be a LONG couple of weeks!
How ist IT?
@@luzid_2154 I really like it. I got the white v and I'll probably pick up the black one soon. I'm a sucker for any flying v guitar.
For the price point I feel like it was totally worth more than what I spent.
@@DavidThull thanks for answering whould you recommend it to me? I Only have a 370€ Ibanez S521 and i really want to try Out some different Body shapes. Im a sucker v's too.
@@luzid_2154 if you like flying v guitars I totally think it's a good buy. I like it enough to consider buying a second one. I also have a Solar V and I like that one a lot too. There are a few differences in the S By Solar and the Solar guitar, but for me they are not big enough to notice while I'm playing. I'm also a pretty basic person. All I really need is a single volume knob and a bridge pickup to be happy.
Overall, for me it sounds good, the input jack is in a good spot, and it was delivered really fast after I paid for it and it arrived in great condition.
This is also just my experience with the brand.
Nigel is an international treasure and I hope we see more of him in upcoming videos. Great work Glen! And great work @OlaEnglund ! I'll be shopping the site once it comes back up.
I really liked the editing on this video it felt very lively, and great video as always
is no one going to comment on the huge improvement on the editing recently? Big props to your editor glen.
❤
Hey Glenn! I know this is off topic as it regards to this video, but i can't describe how grateful i am that i found your channel. I was under the assumption that good guitar tone came from good hardware, but oh how glad i am to be so wrong. I don't really play metal but after playing around with some of the plugin recommendations you gave (especially the free amp sims!) I discovered a tone could only dream of. Between you and Stevie T ill be sweep picking in no time. It also opens up my mind to exploring other types of amp sims that are more on the cleaner side for some of my other projects :)
Also, quad tracking rhythm sections for greater presence has to the best bit of mixing advice ive ever gotten.
great videos and awesome information
"the guitar collectors country club". I'm dying.
Awesome review as usual Glenn. Love to get my hands on that guitar. Also, good job Solar!
Your playing has been improving every dam episode. Love seeing the growth and more importantly confidence in your playing.
That thing looks super nice. The guitar's pretty cool too 😆 Love this channel, not sure why it took me so long to subscribe. Sarcasm done properly, shouting, great reviews and actual useful info. Thanks Glenn.
Hi Glenn.I have learned alot from you. I used to feel guilty about recording with my cheaper guitars, but they just sounded better on a particular song. You helped to free me from the cult. Thanks,I am subscribed😎
I love how I take a break from the channel and come back and Glenn’s gotten even better! Hell he was shreddin Pantera. Effing love it!!
I love seeing how much your playing has improved over the years. Good shit Glenn
Hi Glenn, I've been subscribed to you for the past 4 years, and I'm very glad that we have someone who is debunking stupid guitar myths. As someone who plays guitar I'm listening to your advice and doing the most important thing which is to practice and improve day by day.
Recently I've spent 3 Gs on a custom made overload guitar knowing that it will have little to no sound difference than my previous harley benton and ibanez, but I still think it is a good thing to own nice things if that is what makes people happy. Although unlike some I am not one to cope, and other tone snobs could learn to live outside of a delusion.
Kudos to your editor, this one is a masterpiece. Give him a raise. Or a new guitar.
Yo this video was on another level! Awesome job!
Hey, love your videos! I’ve been watching for quite some time now and you really are becoming a great guitar player! It’s easy to see how much you’ve improved! Also, great review. I love that you always have the musician’s best interest in mind. It’s a really good change of pace when looking at all the videos on youtube. Anyways, continue producing those great videos! Cheers!
Thank you, Samuel!
Nice to see Machinery of Torment at 5:39 , awesome playing ! 🎉
Its hilarious when someone points out "Oh Your Guitar Was MaDe In ChInA" (Which usually just means "assembled")
But if I stripped it and put on New Tuning Machines, New Nut and String Trees, New Pickups, Pots and Wiring, New Bridge and Pickgaurd, pretty sure it was assembled in the U.S.A.
AcHtuAlly, if ANY product says "Made in China", there's about 100% chance it's actually made in China... Your statement does apply to some domestic products though, in ur case USA, in my case Finland.
You have such a fun channel, Glenn! I love coming back here to see what you’re up to haha
Glenn started me on a speaker quest awhile back after watching his videos. I discovered the Mojotone BV25M in that process and just like Glenn, I KEEP COMING BACK TO IT!! 😂😂😂
I loaded a 412 with 2 BV25Ms up top and 2 Celestion V30s in the bottom (my poor man’s Friedman speaker setup) and it slays!!
Keep up the great work Glenn!!
You're definitely right about it saving a butt load of cash after your expensive cherished guitar disappears.
It's great to see unbiased reviews on giving a heads-up on some banging good stuff worth buying.
My number 1 is my 2005 Squier Affinity Strat in an HSS configuration with a Gilmour mod. It does absolutely everything I need it to and sounds and plays great! I maybe spent about $150 altogether on the upgraded electronics which just goes to prove that you don’t need to spend 100’s of dollars to get a great sound out of your gear!
Great job man love your style , videos and inspiration / information 🤘
I am stoked to hear the fret edges are smooth!
I just got my first Solar a couple of weeks ago and so far i'm very impressed with it, if this comes close in terms of QC than i'll probably get one the seven strings. That should be an decent way to get into 7 strings on a budget and if it doesn't work out, i paid less for it than some people (including myself) spend on a delay pedal.
Hope they'll add a baritone option, aswell.
+1 for a baritone option
I'd snatch a baritone YESTERDAY 😂😂
My soulmate guitar is a midnight blue Jackson model 6. My gig guitar was a Yamaha RGX 312 and for literal combat deployments an Hondo 2 Ving Zuma I originally found in 2 pieces behind a guitar store. JHS rock box ,Frontline Overdrive and Anvil case complete the combat rig. still have the rig
thanks for the review, and thanks for taking a sec to demo the clean and gritty tones too.
yo this is an epic editing style dude love it!
🤘🏻
I think ola did something very impressive the S, series looks and sounds great for a killer price point. Thanks Ola
Nothing but love for you Glenn, you speak'em truth...
I really don't expect great setup on inexpensive guitars. I tend to do a set up on every new guitar as it also familiarizes me with the guitar. It's nice when it's good to start but I feel like knowing how to set up a guitar is valuable for any guitar player.
I APPRECIATE YOUR LOUDNESS
AND YOUR BLATANT HONESTY!
Really digging the new style of the videos. Keep rocking Glen.
I think there’s a sweet spot from like 600-1000 where it plays nice (obviously) and it still looks/sounds cool and inspires you to play. That being said, for studio recording and just having access to ‘tones’ I’ve always gone for squire, epiphone, and the cheap Jackson’s. They play nice, sound good, and are CHEAP. I had an EP Sheraton that played just as good (if not better) than my Les Paul Traditional. But I would never take a Sheraton on stage (sorry Gallagher)
I haven't bought a budget guitar in a while, but for me the Jackson JS32 line is pretty sweet. I think they're a great blue print to mod along the way. I think Solar may be up there now.
The whole JS-line is top notch! S will have a hard time beating those! I got a JS12 and it's great for the price! FYI the entire JS-line is basically the same guitars, the only major differences are cosmetic and if they have a Floyd or nah.
I've got a JS30RR V and it's one of the best budget guitars I've ever played. Active pickups and 24 frets make it an absolute monster!!!
I bought my son the JS V for Christmas . It's ace and he loves it . I spent half an hour setting up the Floyd better and new strings and it's awesome . Sorry should say the string on it were fine , but 9s and he prefers 10s .
Glen, I've known who you are and watched you for a long time now. I've always thought I was subscribed but I found out I wasn't. Now I am. I love your reviews, it's due to you I stopped following controversy and began to experience other things. Thank you for helping me realize what I couldn't with the budget I have and always obsessing over the next axe to get I'm now constantly tone hunting instead and learned to appreciate what I have. Awesome episode.
Glens getting better playing guitar every video it’s cool to see the progression 🤘🏻
"DO NOT SAY HIS NAME" *SMIRKS "We do not talk about the Dark One..." baaaahahahhaah I almost spat my drink literally
Glenn smashing that V.
Loved the video, the editing was hilarious.
this episode was very ADHD friendly, short, to the point, flashy, and quick.
i personally don't like solar guitars because of their looks, but i had the opportunity to play them couple times and they feel and play excellent. great bang for buck, even the somehwat more pricey 1. variants. now i'm curious about the S entry level instruments. gotta get my hands on one.
Gotta love Glenn’s abrasive, frenetic, all over the place style!
Ola is doing an amazing favor to those who can't afford an expensive guitar, me included. S looks really cool and I bet it sounds brutal with some good plugins. I hope I can buy one S because I will really enjoy it.
Oh, the most fun part of the story is that (I think) the warehouse is really close to my home.
Damn Glenn your getting really good at playing keep it up man. Love the content. Look forward to seeing you again.
Ayy the raffle ends the day before my birthday! Also wanted to mention I love that Solar is releasing more budget friendly guitars. I love their style and Ola is when hell of a guy. Keep killin it my friend !
A great amp will make most "cheaper" guitars sound pretty damn good. A "high end" guitar in most cases will not help a "crappy" amp. A great player on the other hand can usually make both shitty scenarios work pretty well. 🤘🤘🤘
Cheap guitars have been great for a while now. Picked up a squier anniversary tele a couple months back for $420 after tax. Has some tuning issues so I’ll probably replace the tuners with locking ones. These S types look sick and I’m gonna need to pick up this V!
I bought a bullet mustang ages ago for £109!! It’s one of the best playing guitars I’ve ever had and the hum-buckers fuckin roar!
Replace the nut, that's usually the problem
I'd say the tuning issues are probably more related to the nut - there's quite a few good tutorials on the interwebs for filing a nut. Even a plastic one should be fine ("vintij" Gibsons used plastic nuts, as much as tone snobs might like to forget that corian is a type of acrylic plastic) so long as it's filed right. I use a cheap welding torch tip cleaning kit I got from the hardware store.
Actually tuning issue can be the string tree. Get one that goes across all the strings and tighten it down until all the strings lay flat against the nut.
As always, another great video!
This was a damn good review Glenn! Thanks again dude! ❤
hahahahahhahah that guitar smash I wasn't expecting
Beat me to it 😂
Same I was like oh shit!!
True story: The electric guitar I learned on for a year in '00 was my ex's and when she asked for it back I smashed it up like that and put it back in the case
I want one!!!
🤣@-AnonLab2
That's only $300.00?! That's insane. That's an amazing guitar for that price. Those pick ups sound great to me.
You gotta remember, this guy has 100 thousand dollars in studio gear, not exactly what they are gonna sound like when you go pick one up.. lmao
@VashStarwind also, if it was garbage, no amount of expensive gear could make it sound good.
actually thats not true, youd be amazing what 100k in post processing gear can do.. lmao @@dinkins335
But yeah, it still didnt sound that good, so i guess you kinda have a point..
Love the new style of videos. Super entertaining 🤘🤘🤘
Glenn I snatched a copy of the Element Bass and in just a couple of minutes I was able to get a damn awesome tone out of a few tracks I recorded from a rehearsal for my band. I was very, very impressed. Having used other plugins and suffered through trying to stack a bunch of layers/buses until the damn thing sat in the mix properly (you would think bass is easier to mix...). I found element to get me to a point where it just sounds great in little time. It's amazing. Thanks :)
Awesome! I’m glad it’s working out!
RIP Harley Benton V
Chris Chan in another life.
the editing was awesome on this video
Awesome! Love the reviews and ola!
Solar guitars website is still crashed after they offered a buy one get one deal Im still hoping to get 2 new solars😂
Was that a real deal ?
@@C0nnie I saw a few places that it was bug their site was crashed and I checked all night go see if I could get through
Your editors really need to take a chill pill or two. Freaking hell. Just because you can add a punch in or shake effect every 2 seconds doesn't mean you should 😅
Yeah this video was over edited to hell
First time ive come across you. I loved the video new subscriber right here!
Brooooo! Your skills on the git is getting insane! Well done man!
The difference between expensive and inexpensive guitars is not in the sound. It is in the built/joint quality, attention to detail, feel, playability and most importantly overall vibe and inspiration. Some of these things you can only see some of them you can feel. Those are the things that make difference. Sometimes even the differnece in vibe , the constant inspiration resulting from that feel is worth alone to pay more. It does not mean that an inexpensive guitar cant have vibe. Sometimes an inexpensive guitar can be inspiring too, just it is much more rare. Just comparing the sound is meaningless, sound comes mostly from pickups and the amp.
I think I could agree until certain extend, the rest is just a mix of marketing, nostalgia and just repeating what others say
Killer video!! Loved seeing u in toronto at the jinjer show! You are the man !
DUDE! I am here to say that your video production is AMAZING!
Great review. What really impressed me, though, was your PLAYING. Oh, and the humor was spot on. I really enjoyed this, Glenn.
Awesome guitar review, all the post shots with the guitars info are a nice touch. Thats one thing about glenn, never complacent always trying to make his videos visually more exciting to watch for the viewer. Now lets get some Bass Guitars on here please.
Very generous of you Glen!
Nice review as always Glenn, and Nigel is such a personality! Anyway, your playing is getting better with every video but I think you can do better with those vibratos if you use your wrist, it will give you more control and consistency.
I was going to complain that you used my video of the yellow CNC machine, but I really like this video. So I hit the thumbs up and subscribed.
Just found your channel and liked and subscribed. Great stuff!
That looks like a sweet guitar.
My personal favourite guitar is a BC Rich warlock bronze series that I bought for $75 as a project. I refinished it with a Sepultura S logo and I put a set of blackouts I bought second hand. It sounds amazing and looks pretty cool. I’m not a professional luthier or anything but I know what I like.
Cool video. I just subbed. But a bit of info on the guitar give away contest would be nice. Any geographical restrictions? When does the contest happen? That kind of stuff. Thanks
Hey Glen I’ve found your channel not too long ago and I already love your content. Maybe you should do a review on one of the Vola guitars? I think you won’t be disappointed, I’ve manage to get my hands on one not too long ago and I must say, for a Japanese handmade guitar the price is very tempting and the quality is spot on!
Congrats on the channel and much success to come your way, keep rocking 🤘🏾
Another great video! I was also waiting to possibly pull the trigger on a S by Solar guitar knowing that Glenn was going to try one out. Guess I have to add to my Santa's List! Oh, and please we need to see MORE NIGEL! Hilarious poke at the "superior ones". 😆🤘
Good stuff man. Subscribed.
Just stumbled across your channel. Man that spoke my language the whole time! Player for 18 years and I really only have budget electrics. My acoustic is probably considered by some as "budget" yet to me it was a decent price. Loved. New sub from me.
What a great channel to stumble upon, instantly subscribed, love your honesty.
Ty!
genuinely appreciate that you got a guitar from a friend, and still gave it a super honest review and pointed out the flaws. So many people would say it’s perfect because it came from a friend, and then have people confused when they get one. This is how reviews should be done.
Also, Ola would be one of the only people actually okay with this and appreciate it too based on his comment. Lol. Such a good dude who genuinely wants to give us good instruments at a good price 🙏🏻
True fact....ola is the world's coolest giant
You make an excellent point about the risk of losing or damaging gear on the road! You hear about stuff like that happening all the time. It's something that really should be taken into consideration when making gear purchases. Love your stuff Glenn!
Well, today is the day. I’ve been watching your videos for over a year now. You definitely deserve a subscribe from me and every one else. Keep doing what you’re doing sir. Subscribed!
This was great. I use synthesizers and drum machines. But hearing how awesome the playing sounded is getting me tempted to sit down and learn to play something on a guitar. Even something fairly simple could a nice flavor to a synth heavy track.
Hellarious, Glenn. Keep up the good work!
dude! your guitar playing has IMPROVED! Keep up the grind!
Kickass review as always!
Hey Glenn, I recently picked up a Mojotone Greyhound speaker and it’s perfect for my purposes (black metal & desert rock). Would love to see it demo’d. I can safely say I’ve never bought a V30 largely thanks to your channel. I always look for speakers that the metal crowd has ignored to help find a semi unique sound.
I thought I was subscribed!!! been watching your videos all these years. Now officially a sub. Cheers amigo!
Ty!!
The editor really flexed their muscles on this one. Good stuff!
Also, more Nigel please.
💪🏻
Hey glen! loved the video! what did you use for the tone? sounds killer.
Great review mate
Hey Glen! Long time subscriber, I happen to also work at a guitar store and I'm always talking to my co workers about your content. You talked about "why don't you comment on Rhetts videos" and that was something we spoke about last week!
As someone who's here for the recording, I think the reason you see this is there isn't many other CZcams with the science to back up what you say. I think the issue is finding someone who can cater to those type of players, and who is willing to put science first despite the backlash they'll get from it.
Keep up the great work! I look forward to another 10 years of audio tips, tricks, and content!
