- Here's everything you need to know about WatchOS 10 - including all the new features for sports and fitness!
Apple has just announced a slate of new features and products at their annual WWDC event (World Wide Developer Conference). This event is where the company announces new updates to their software platforms (and some new hardware). Generally speaking, they only cover a fraction of the updates in the keynote, and then over the coming days and weeks, we find the rest of the new features in the developer betas, followed by public betas.
1) Adding NameDrop to iOS 17 and watchOS 10: This is the new ability to quickly share contact info via NameDrop, so you aren’t doing the ‘text someone your name in a message’ thing (something I ironically did just minutes before the keynote) - this is just so much cleaner, and includes the new contact card format you see above.
2) Newly redesigned native apps across watchOS: These better use the new UI, as well as new fullscreen views that can be iterated using the Digital Crown (with access for developers)
Adding two new watch faces: Palette, and Snoopy & Woodstock.
3) New Widgets from watch face: You can use Digital Crown to access widgets directly from the watch face; this can be things like the calendar, timers, workouts, or 3rd party apps.
4) New Bluetooth Cycling Sensor support: Added cycling speed sensors, cadence sensors, and power meter support (Bluetooth), natively into the Workouts app. This also supports smart trainers that transmit Bluetooth Smart as well. This will record the data to Apple Health at the rate of the sensor (e.g 1-second). Additionally, this live sensor data is now accessible to other 3rd party apps via API, so apps don’t have to write their own sensor connectivity if they don’t want to. For example, Strava could expand their HR sensor support to power/cadence/speed super easily by leveraging Apple’s native support for it now. Note, the external running power meters are not supported here within the running profiles, only the bike profiles.
Will estimate cycling power FTP: When using a power meter sensor and heart rate from the watch. At this point this is only for cycling power, not yet running power zones. Additionally, % of FTP can be used within the structured workouts and data fields as noted down below.
5) Will automatically determine cycling power zones: This also requires a power meter (and HR from your watch). These zones are customizable and specific to power, both in the ranges each zone, but also the number of zones you use.
6) iOS will have full-screen companion watch view: Sorta like a companion to your watch - useful for putting your phone on your bike handlebars, but then leverages your watch data. This will mirror your exact Apple Watch data pages, and there’s no configuration options around that - it’s basically all or nothing. So if you’ve got power on your Apple Watch page, you’ll also have it for the phone app.
7) Shows last known cellular location: In the Hiking sport profile, watchOS will automatically create new waypoints for the last known cellular location, for both your carrier and other carriers (for emergencies)
8) Adding new dynamic 3D elevation view to WatchOS: In this view you can see your previously added waypoints, with relative elevation shown as well.
9) Adding new topographic map view to WatchOS: This map view is an offline map using your phone’s offline map view. Interestingly though, there isn’t yet true offline maps on the watch itself, just the phone that the watch can leverage. Further, there’s no pre-planned routing atop this at this point.
10) Adding the ability to see trails around you, and the specific trail route data: This will show you the nearby trails and specifically the trailheads. It will not route atop those trails, but rather, is via the Apple Maps app to show you how far away it is.
11) Adding new WatchOS high-frequency motion data for developers: This new data is at a higher frequency than previous data, and also supports greater ranges of motion data. Further, it allows for batch access to the data, versus apps previously had to ingest it all in real-time, which added more real-time processing overhead. Now they can do it in set intervals.
12) New Workouts API: TrainingPeaks is already onboard, and shown in the keynote. This will enable 3rd party apps to push workouts to the Apple Watch natively. This is supported in all workout types except Multisport, Pool Swim, and Openwater Swim. The workout API supports power and cadence targets, using the new sensor data as well - for both running and cycling.
13) New Scheduled Workouts: With the Workouts API, companies can send the next 7 days of workouts, as well as the previous 7 days of workouts. This allows for calendaring of workouts and scheduling of those.

I have a Bowflex C6. I know I could invest in power pedals which would hopefully(?) work based on what you said in your video. But what about cadence? Any ideas how I can get this data from my bike into Apple Fitness? Thanks. BTW the new iPhone companion app for cycling works perfectly... something I wanted and it's incredible.
Great Job, Ray. That was super quick turnaround to launch this video.
As an Apple Watch user I’ve always wanted this integration and I was abnormally excited while watching this announcement. As someone who doesn’t ride long enough at one time to require a cycling computer, these updates plus my phone bar mount is what I wanted
This was the reason I kept going back to my Garmin.
Thank you for your positivity and informative post!! Helpful and hopeful, loved it!!
Quick question: with the watchOS 10 officially out, does your maps show the topographic countries and other data? My Ultra only shows the topo stuff in certain areas around California and Nevada, but fails to show it in any other place in the US. Are you having that same experience?
Thank you for summary!! There are sooo much nice Features Coming in 😍😍
thanks for the insightful info., your channel is great!
Long time Garmin-user (Fénix 3, 6) moved over to apple watch ultra.
Great flow as usual Ray
This is all great to see. I was hoping to see improvements in the recovery information. Also, health on the web / or Watch access from the web would have been amazing even if was just another app on the iCloud page.
Lots of good updates ahead for watchOS! Nice! can´t wait!
According to CZcams channel _The Quantified Scientist,_ Apple seems to have done many aspects of data gathering extremely well. Development has been relatively slow, but that aproach + having same OS for several generations of watches is starting to pay.
At least in that channels tests, current Apple Watch SE/Ultra/Series 8 has been the best HR tracker (especially with weights etc.) and the best Sleep tracker, too. And one of the best GPS trackers, together with Garmin. SpO2 measurement isn't accurate, but does still have some uses (big repeating drops etc.). Now WatchOS 10 moves Apple again further to the territory of serious Sport watches.
Still, dedicated Sport Watches tend to have massively better battery life. With or without AMOLED. Many pricier ones also do automatic estimates of your training readiness (HRV etc.), VO2max trend, suggested workouts, easy and clear reports etc. In that sort of stuff, Apple is still quite a lot behind (3rd party apps do fix xx % of this). On the other hand, Apple does have lots of money...
Nice update Ray, thank you. Just bought a forerunner solar Apple is still to far off on battery life.
How accurate you think is Apple Watch-iPhone combo in estimating VO2 max?🤔
Somewhat unrelated question, but thanks…
Great job and look forward to your future videos on the beta.
Thanks - appreciate it!
Thank you once again for the videos. Does Apple Watch has the feature "LAP PACE" on any of it´s Apps? That´s is all I need to change it from my Garmin.
Looking forward to your tests of the bike sensors with the new watchOS. Hope it would work for 2-in-1 speed/cadence sensor or power meter with the cadence data…
My first ever wrist watch was a Snoopy and Woodstock one, so this new face makes me ridiculously happy 😊
obvious next question... will the iPhone IOS 17 also allow to pair with power/speed/cadence sensors?
Nice to see them bring all these new features to Watch OS10. Thanks for sharing.
Do you know if iOS10 will be pushed to all versions of the Apple Watch?
The hiking features seemed really nice. Now they just need hardware to back that up (much better battery life)
Hey! I was wondering to get a wahoo elemnt bolt v2 (+ sensors) with the current discount, do you think it's worth it even though I have an apple watch or should I wait until September when apple will release this new update? I am currently training for my first Olympic Distance Triathlon and so I have aero bars, this makes it impossible to mount my iphone.
THIS WAS AN AWESOME, SIMPLE, INFORMATIVE REVIEW. THANKS - T MO
Over a year later, offline maps for the watch, also when are you gonna do a video on the oceanic app on the ultra now that it’s out? And can you do a dive chamber to failure test see how much pressure it takes to crush the Watch?
Realllllly want to be able to design structured running workouts on my phone/iPad/Mac, like you can with Coros.
Hi, is it worth to install it to my main watch? (SE)
I do like the fact they seem to integrate more and more cycling features. The ftp measurement is a cool and welcome adding. But when will the apple watch be able to measure vo2max while cycling? I know it’s pretty inaccurate, but still I would like to track it. Thanks
Apple Health on iPad! Amazing and finally. Only how many years overdue?
I love DC's reviews. Finally figured out if I play back at 75% speed I can understand most of what is said.
Haha...true.
Thank you. Nice to hear from an expert exercise professional (freak) point of view 😊. I always aspire to be 10% fit as you and so knowing your perspective is great. I have an Ultra too and would love to hear how you use your watch.
Thanks - appreciate it!
Thanks for the update! The structured workout API is great…I hope Apple will redesign the native workout app so that it’s more readable- reducing the number of font colors, getting rid of the hundredths of a second, providing more black space, etc.
Yup. The font color thing makes me cranky. It’s even worse on the iPhone.
The workout API is massive! it was the single reason I was still using Stryd on my Ultra as I couldn’t be bothered to create workouts on the watch
Great quick first glance Ray! I assume fixing the Bluetooth profile for Watch will also allow it work with Smart bikes ... ie. Wahoo Kickr Bike and the Kickr Headwind?
Thanks!
Correct, and BT power source, including trainers.
Question: How does the Apple watch go for intervals and laps. I find the buttons on Garmin much better for this? Any thoughts? Also is there a difference between Apple watch and ultra for lapping intervals during activities.
I have an odd question. I have two watches, Series 7 and a Series 8, both were “gifts” from work. Both are paired to the same phone, and the Auto-Switch seems to work well. I am hoping that Watch OS 10 solves for this, but does anyone have an app, hack, or suggestion, on how to keep the settings for both watches the same and synced? In particular, alarms, and more useful, medication reminders, which I think is getting an improvement this September. I guess I am thinking it would be great to set an alarm on the watch, then it gets automatically added to the phone, then automatically added to the other watch. When the alarm goes off, so long as one device sends the dismiss confirmation, they all go silent, or snooze, depending on what was pressed. Yes I get that the audio notification would be governed by volume settings, or Do not Disturb. Thanks.
Great video! Just installed the beta and was looking for more details. Would be cool if the Apple Watch can connect to Shimano and SRAM drivetrains too.
One step at a time...
Finally sold. Maybe ask for this for Christmas this year.
I used Apple Watch Ultra for a 50 mile unsupported race in the mountains. Had bluetooth off but otherwise used the normal workout app with workoutdoors for map access. 14 hours and had 11% battery left. Was an absolute unit.
Yup. indeed - your battery stats just about perfectly match mine for my trail run. 14hrs with 15% battery left (Bluetooth enabled but not used). Nice!
Powerful battery life
What happens when the battery starts to degrade? Good luck trying to have apple replace it
A watch that needs charging every day is not a training watch!!
If you say so 😅
Going to be a game changer to be able to connect to my trainer. Now all that we are missing is HRV/Recovery score like whoop, Garmin and others. I use Athyletic but it would be awesome to have a apple program to do so and kick the third party apps.
Indeed, looking forward to seeing what comes next!
Highly disappointing that we don't have an Apple Recovery / Readiness Index with Watch OS 10. Surely Apple can't be this oblivious to what the health / fitness users want right?!
@@wayne1516 Considering how long it took them to implement sleep stages (which seem to be really good now), I think Apple don’t push any numbers they’re not 100% certain on.
I wish they’d just buy up Whoop to get a head start.
Great review
I’m surprised Apple dont put more work into training and recovery metrics. Apple health displays HRV, but tells you nothing about your score. Huge potential here for apple. I love the Garmin metrics and find it super useful. But Apple is really going somewhere here. Excited for september!
They sometimes leave stuff open for developers to cater their ecosystem. GentlerStreak, Trainingtoday and athlytic are all kinda doing the stuff the Garmin does.
But i guess they will launch some sort of AI coach with the Apple Watch 9, which will look at this data
Any word on if this will connect to indoor cycling power meters as well or is this just outdoors? Fantastic video
Any Bluetooth Smart power meter or trainer.
I was gonna ask this
@@Dcrainmaker love it thanks
This looks really great. For me the only thing holding me back is lack of GPX and navigation for trail running as well as support for sports like rock climbing.
Can they fix the run split issue. My apple watch ultra will show mile spilts in strava until i add a segment (say a few .5 mile pickups). All miles before the intervals become one split. I loos those initial mile auto splits.
I know they're working on some really amazing stuff with the watch, I can't wait to see when or if that finally becomes real.
In your excitement you were speaking too fast to be understood clearly. Enhance your calm. Great information. Thank you.
I'm sure other videos cover this but I would like to note battery life is absolutely still an issue to some - even the iWatch Ultra. I'm skeptical it can record all what v10 provides for more than a few hours when not in low power mode or something. I just finished Unbound and even though I made sure to fully charge it and muted its request to record my race, (knowing it wouldn't last), it died somewhere around mile 120. This is consistent with any ride I've done so far over 7 hours or so. (Apparently the watch was still silently recording activity of some sort.)
Note I have not tried using low power mode yet because I use a dedicated computer for my workouts. I need to watch your video on that!
Congrats doing Unbound!
another great video
I think its fair to say that MOST riders that have power meters (not so much the others) would already have a cycle computer and even if they dont, strapping a £1000+ phone to your handlebars isnt ideal...that said, I havea 1030 plus which is great for me and all the data, having ther data directly in AW Health now as well is only a good thing
Great progess, however what i really miss on the regular AW's is starting a workout without the ridiculous countdown timer. Its my go to watch, but for races (run or tri) its pretty useless like this not knowing whether you actually have GPS or HR connection when you start
Is this supported on normal apple watch?
Hey, so on the Smart Stack, I have sent that people are able to get a digital clock instead of the analog clock. Do you know how to change this setting?
Any idea how maps work regarding on line / off line? One thing I’m enjoying with the Suunto vertical is planning routes on the iPhone and sending to the watch to follow there. Super easy and as long as I’ve downloaded my part of the world I’m sorted.
What about Todays plan? would it be possible to push training plans as well?
Have they solved the problem of the work outs pausing if the watch looses sensor data? I only ever use the Strava app because it never pauses with auto pause off, the native workout app pauses even with auto pause turned off.
Awesome features. I do 10-12 hours long rides. While my Garmin Edge drained to 40%, my Apple Watch 6 and my iPhone Pro needed charging at 2/3 of the day. None of these was tracking anything , none of these was used. Maybe the phone for a few pictures.
I do not have a Garmin Watch but I would like to see the recovery, stamina, and human battery features in Apple Watch.
I cannot imagine using iPhone as a bike computer (extension screen) on a longer ride without carrying extensive battery packs :( especially if you communicate with external sensors.
Must be something wrong with the iphone, when it just sits in your pocket and still drains loads of juice? But anyway this would be my questions also. What is the battery duration ? I hope at least 4 - 6 hours. I do think most cyclists won’t do more than 3 or 4 at the most on ‘normal’ rides.
I'd guess the watch would be handling the sensor connectivity though - maybe less draining for the phone itself?
The best thing for me is the fact that you can view your heart rate on your phone while doing a workout. I had to buy a polar HR monitor so I could use the app to view my heart rate and HR zones. It got very annoying trying to do specific HR workouts having to pause to check my HR!
Does anyone know if the AW Ultra will be able to control a smart trainer? I enjoyed the ability to use my Forerunner 955 for structured bike workouts from training peaks that can control my trainer resistance straight from the watch.
Do I still need an iPhone on me to use maps on the Apple Watch? Or do maps download to watch?
I been using Garmin watches for years (2, actually) for health and tracking but haven’t been happy with them of late (too complex with menu diving) and was considering switching to an AppleWatch. But finding out that their longevity is about 3-5 years is crazy. I’ll stick to the Garmin.
This is very cool to see! Ray... do you expect to see the power meter support on the watch make its way over to Fitness+? If you could buy a cheap spin bike and a set of power meter pedals, then use them with Fitness+, I can see this taking a chunk of users away from Peloton!
Hi DC Rainmaker, Thanks for yet another amazing video. Just a quick question… what’s the name of the third party app for Apple Watch which gives adv physiological metrics similar to Garmin? Is it, Athletics? If I heard u correctly
Athlytic. Cheers!
Will the features of Bluetooth work with Apple Watch Series 7?
Is this for app watxhes Iv got the series 7 or just got the ultra
Does this mean Apple Watch (heart rate data) can connect to Strava???
What about using apple watch ultra for emtb ? is there activity profile for it ?
beautiful updates for those who don’t do sports seriously :)
Still no possibility of editing (calibrating) the distance in treadmill running? Garmin has this feature.
As always - VERY informative and great video!
are these features only for the Ultra?
I am interested to find out how the widget scrolling with the crown works with watch faces that have interactive features. For instance, with the default, Apple Watch Ultra face when you scroll it turns it to a night mode. What happens when you have widgets, does that feature disappear?
If I remember right... that night mode is a special feature for that single new Ultra-only watch face. So, OS menus and other watch faces can't be turned to red and back.
If that's still the case, then it'd be easy to update a watch face to have few options for the Crown function:
* Original functionality: Brightness/Nightmode
* New WatchOS 10 feature: Widget Scrolling
* Custom setting...
I saw offline maps for iPhone but what about Apple Watch?
Do you know a way to add or remove old racer routes. I started mine a year ago and they are short compared to the routes I ride now, and would like to extend or make new ones, but can find a way. Any Ideas? Or could you ask Apple?
How are we supposed to take you serious when you only have one watch on? I'm mean look at that empty right wrist. I mean, I guess I'll give the video a like for the thumbnail alone. Hope you're having a good trip Ray!
Apple security does only allow apple on campus 😂
Haha...yeah, I try and 'play nice' when on campus at various companies. :)
@@Dcrainmaker - Smart. 👌
At least have a series 8 on the other wrist 😅
Truth. I’m wearing 3 watches right now just to watch this video.
I have two questions after the keynote and your video:
1. Could AW replace for example a Wahoo ELEMNT cycling computer, now you can pair sensors?
2. If so, how can you sync your rides to Strava? Or will Strava update their watch app that can also connect sensors?
1) Sorta, it'll do the basics of displaying sensor data. But it won't do navigation/routing/Strava Live Segments, or have anywhere near the data fields of the Wahoo GPS.
2) To sync rides with Strava, you can pull it in from the native Strava app (already today, but not yet with power), or, via HealthFit.
It could be interesting for the small training rides where you don’t need navigation etc. Just ride with your ‘cycling computer’ on your wrist.
I am genuinely excited for this update and the potential improvements to apps via third party developers. This update is going to be THE game changer I think.
We try to fit everything into one device because we are a) trying to mimic watches of old and b) not trying to keep up with more accessories. I believe we should have a second wrist based wearable, that would look like a Whoop strap, on your non-watch wrist. It would be useful for tracking weightlifting and other sports. The “Apple Duo” or something like that.
Two other things needed for the watch. Broadcasting heart rate natively. Need to have integration with ebikes. (With allowing connection to power meter and cadence sensors they are getting closer.)
Thank you, Ray always great to see your reviews, will the cycling option have a customized speed auto start& stop?
When will Apple devlope a situation as to when I delete a text of my iphone it deletes from my Iwatch? I hate the fact that if I dont wear my watch for a few days and as soon as I turn on my Iwatch I get lots of old text messages I need to delete.
Regarding bike training, When are they going to add slope gradient information? Polar and Garmin have that metric and much more. I have a Polar watch and a Garmin GPS and can say that as far as a sport watch/device they are far better than the Apple Watch, no doubt. As far as connectivity the Apple Watch is a good debí to take the most out of one’s iPhone though.
Hope they add VO2 for bicycle also 👌
Is there a large segment of the bike population that use power meters and not head units? i’m glad apples doing it, but it feels like a head units is pretty cheap in comparison to the price I would pay for a power meter
How do you use the trail map, and where’s the topo? Also, you talk way to fast 😂
Do the new features only work with Ultra or do they also work for Series 7/8? Love the Ultra but it’s comically large on my wrist.
All Apple Watch 4 and above, plus SE/Ultra.
Can AW now detect weight lifting in stock app? (Reps)?
I use the Apple Watch ultra daily in outdoor walk mode when I take my dog for a walk. Every time I stop for my dog to socialise with another dog, pee etc the watch gives me prompts asking if my workout is finished. It’s so annoying. How many dog walkers have the same issue or users who walk and make the slightest of stops?
Would have lived some sort of body battery feature 😢. Feel that is still my main issue. Hopefully for next year.
I was hoping for more whoop style analysis of data they’re already collecting
Any idea if the auto FTP is also calculated for Running (like the Stryd Auto CP)?
No ftp or power zones for running, yet.
WorkOutDoors app looks like it will still reign supreme for Apple Watch fitness apps
I still don't see Training Peaks workout integration ? I take it this feature has not yet gone live ? any idea when it will ?
TrainingPeaks hasn't lit it up yet.
For the average runner like me the Apple watch was sort of enough and my current Epix 2 is mostly overkill beside the battery life. I also discovered in my marathon yesterday that iPhone GPS was way off where Garmin was within the limits of me not taking the most direct route. So for now I will run with my Epix but when that is getting older I will for sure drop back to Apple Watch.
i juat knew that now apple warch could be paired with cadance and power sensors
When the Apple Watch gets the next gen (3 nanometer) chips battery life will get a quite significant boost. 18 hrs will increase to better than 24 for example. But that by definition is a hardware change. I, too, am looking forward to more intelligent software based battery management for the Apple Watch.
I’m totally jazzed that you’re in the Bay Area. I’m a big fan. As tempting as it is, I won’t drop by and see if I can say hi even though you’re only 4ish miles from where I live.
Have a great trip!
Do you need an AWU for the topo maps or is that any watch that wil support the new OS?
My mom has an aging fitbit versa and a new Apple Watch might be a good fit for her since she likes hiking, but i cant see her wanting the Ultra.
Just the OS.
@@Dcrainmaker Cool, I'll have to let her know about the update then. Thank you for the work you do
Any news if we will be able to use the Apple Watch as a Bluetooth heart rate monitor and connect it to a bike computer? Especially interested if we could record a triathlon with the watch and have the HR shown on a bike computer during the bike section.
No, sadly not - no changes there.
I really want this feature. I love my Apple Watch but have to wear a chest strap as well to get HR data on my ELEMNT Roam
I have AW ultra. Anyone having pairing issues their external HRM? I have a garmin and polar and both connect via BT but it disconnects after 2 minutes. Hope they fix this bug on their next update.
Hmm, I haven't had that happen, it seems to hold the connection fairly well. :-/
I find it strange that you get power zone for cycling power and not for running.
Can use the Apple Watch as HRM with Garmin Edge without 3rd apps?
No, not yet. Asked. :(
I live in the Apple Eco-system, but I was getting constantly disappointed with the lack of 3rd party sensor support on the Apple Watch. I wrote several posts about this on the @macrumors site. This update changes everything and I can't wait to see it on my Series 6 watch. If indeed that support works as well as Apple claims it will, I will seriously consider upgrading to the next iteration of the Ultra watch....
