  • During the much-anticipated WWDC event today, Apple has announced several updates to its WatchOS10, some of these updates focus on enhancing the user experience for cyclists that we have been waiting for. The new changes include added support for cycling sensors, estimating cycling power FTP, automatic determination of cycling power zones, Workout API integration, and a synchronized live activity feature between the Apple Watch and iPhone.

Thanks for covering this! I pre-ordered and adopted the first gen Apple watch, and currently have a gen 6 one, precisely because it had at least basic support for cycling workouts, when everyone else only supported running or swimming. This was pre-Strava I think, and only basic bike computers were available. The Apple watch has just gotten more capable over the years. I think I'll still rely on my Garmin as my main ride tracker and interface with my power meter and other sensors, with Strava to track. However, I like that the Apple watch pulls that data together with other activities to help me build a complete picture of how things are going.

I’ve been an iOS fanboy since the first iPhone, and other than the release of the App Store, I’ve never been more excited about an update. I was about to dive into the Garmin system too. I’m so glad they are doing this. Especially having the phone stats on your phone. All my bikes have the same mount for my phone so it’s perfect. I can’t wait.

This is fire. I've been waiting for this for 5+ years. Literally almost bought a Garmin bike computer right before this announcement. Very much looking forward to this update and hopefully it's accurate date. And I'm sure it will be as Apple has probably been working on this for years. Now if we could only get trail forks on the Apple Watch. But being able to add a power meter is fire.

I was literally about to buy a wahoo or Garmin until they have announced this. I have an Apple Watch 8, but it’s lacking cadence/accuracy of a speed sensor (which as a result causes distance to be abit off). Now with this new update, all I need to buy is a set of sensors + power meter, use my phone mount with Apple Watch, you have a FULL set of cycling data. Amazing!

At this point and the information out there, seems to support most Bluetooth sensors including dual sided power meters but will only record as a single file. Is watchOS 10 enough? not sure. I own an iPhone 8, not longer supported by next iOS 17 update: will I be able to update my Apple Watch Series 5 to WatchOS 10? if I need to get a new iPhone, then perhaps I will but for sure my next watch won't be an apple, I would get a Garmin Fenix 7 pro. Also, the only advantage of apple so far is the quality of the heart rate sensor, other than that Garmin has superior physiological parameters analysis, data display, topological maps, battery, watch construction... I don't know... Watch Ultra 2 matching Garmin Epix 2 pro battery would be interesting.

Nice review, however I wouldn't call it a giant leap since 3rd party apps could already provide this functionality and more but it's nice there being a native way which is probably more power efficient and has a better UX. WorkoutDoors still has a lot more cool feature though.

Great overview!! 👋👏👏👏Since I ride with a cycling computer, most of these new features for cycling don't affect me since I don't use my iPhone/Apple Watch to monitor cycling metrics. The one thing Apple could have have done for riders like me was to allow the Apple Watch to directly supply heart rate data to cycling computers like my Garmin 1030+. But, alas, as you said, Apple chose to deny this functionality to its users. I don't think this has anything to do with technical limitations. I think it has everything to do with the fact that Apple would rather put every employee's first born child up for adoption before doing anything that would improve the performance of a competitor, in this case, especially Garmin. The curious thing here is that by not offering native heart rate functionality, Apple has continued to make Garmin fitness watches a more than competitive option in the cycling enthusiast space. Of course, just my opinion. P.S. I was also disappointed to not see an Apple Health app for the Apple Watch. I would love to have access to these metrics on my Watch without having to use a third party subscription app like Athlytic. COME ON APPLE!!!
