People are so quick to call Camilla a bad mom when they literally show you all the examples of a bad mom through Odalia.

Yeah. The difference is that Camilla never dissuaded Luz from her interests. She actually does love her daughter’s creativity. But she also wanted her to make friends and to not put herself or anyone else in mortal danger.

Yes! Thank you!! Sure camila may at first didn't understood luz, but she was still a very caring mom who just wanted luz to socialize with others. Odalia though, she is no mother. She's a monster. She is willing to freaking let other witches DIE all so that she can become royalty. I really hope amity meant to never speak to odalia ever again. Odalia deserves no one, she deserves nothing, she deserves to be alone.

Yeah, I think it's a lot of projection going on and not actually looking at some of Luz's behavior in the human realm. They took Camila's decision to send Luz to camp in the most extreme way possible and assumed the worst of her.

I never really thought of Alador as a bad person for one reason: his expression & body language. Take a second look at how he acts, the look on his face, his tone of voice, etc.... it all points to an attitude of "I'm so sick of this bitch, but I don't want to deal with the shitstorm she'll cause if I speak out, so I'm keeping my head down."
I was in a relationship with an abusive partner once, and I've experienced what he's gone through, so i feel more than a little empathetic for him. It's better to play your role as a good little peon than to cause trouble, because it isn't worth the drama that will come if you try to go against what "they" want. Thing is, while it keeps you from getting hurt, it ultimately leaves you feeling dead inside. You know you're enabling an abuser, but you're sick of being put down (or worse) so you tolerate it anyway. (I now realize that I was lucky to break the cycle, and I'm proud Alador was able to as well)
I'm also starting to realize the sheer talent of the creators here for creating a realistic acting long-term spouse of an abuser.

Despite being given the info by Belos himself that he wanted to kill EVERYONE on the isles, she really thought that because she’s so special she would be excluded from global genocide. Camila might not be a perfect parent, but she is nowhere near as bad as Odalia. Odalia has forced her daughter to cut connections with her best friend because she came from a lower class family, forced Amity to dye her hair because she wanted her kids color coded, was willing to let her kids work in her deadly business, and is willing to overlook genocide for money.

    • @joyc.e.7511
      @joyc.e.7511 Před rokem +70

I don't even think Camila deserves to be in the category of "bad parent". She's never neglected or ignored Luz, she still very much KNOWS her daughter (well, before she went through some shit in the Boiling Isles). Camila only wanted Luz to go to that camp to learn how to socialize...and stop releasing snakes in schools lol. While Alador, although he loves his children, hasn't been present enough to actually know who they are as people. But it's good he's trying to do better. Odalia, if she loves her kids, only does in the sense that they are extensions of herself. They are worthy of love only when they act how she wants...and that's beyond horrible. Not to mention her disregard for life in general.

As someone in CPTSD therapy and support groups in large part to the kinds of emotional parentification, emotional manipulations, and the physical violence that has been implied by Luz's expectations, grom monster transformation into a larger and scarier twisting of her mom when she yells "have you been lying to me" and "you're breaking my heart" as well as her casual chancla usage against an already incapacitated man that she just didn't like what he was saying at that point.
Fuck camila. Fuck people that act like you have to be "the worst" to be called out for how terrible you are. And fuck the entire concept of comparing traumas oftenin a way that is less sympathetic to poc and low income children than it is to sad white rich kids (especially as that often fails to take into consideration all the trauma tht comes with poverty and/or being minority independent of any parenting)|
Plus if she really knew and cared about luz and just wanted her to socialize better, she wouldn't have sent her to a tax camp and thrown out her favorite books. She would have found some camp that centers around her interests where she can make friends that enjoy the same things she does in a structured environment that showcases appropriate and inappropriate use of creativity and props.
A drama camp, anime, book club, some arts and crafts camp. Something that nurtures what is good and natural about Luz, while also helping her to grow up ion helpful ways,.
So no, I'm not giving credit for her knowing more than alador.
I mean ffs, she's like 10. How is she getting dead birds, spiders, snakes, etc and bringing them to school so often? My mom had 5 kids and 2 jobs and often college herself. She still never overlooked when a kid would try to keep a mouse in the house or bring any kind of animal (let alone fireworks) to school. (brother once got expelled for bringing a knife, but those are pretty easy to hide)
Come on now. Half of her behavior issues is about the fact that she's crying for help and attention and doing shocking things is the only option she sees to either impress her peers, or to have her mom pay attention to *herA* needs for once (instead of just relying on Luz/classic role reversal)

@@joyc.e.7511 Shes so emotionally abusive/emotionally parentifies Luz (very common after divorce or death of another parent or other traumas in the parents life.) so severely she's literally Luz's biggest fear and Luz is too preoccupied with how to emotionally take care of her mom to actually live her own life on several occasional. aNd they hint towards physical abuse as wall (mostly luz's expectations, habit of flinching, and complete fear of a violent reaction when she knows she's upset eda who only said something like "I won't trust you if you make a mess"
She's a shit mom. They come in a wide variety. This one just happens to be terrible in a way that way too many identify with and try to excuse away from their own parents or even themselves. Which makes her extra important to call out, vs the one literally joining the evil team and broadcasting pure evil vibes.
Most abusers are just regular people. Many child abusers are "imperfect parents who try their best". That's just reality.

@@foxyfox9196 My heart goes out to you and I hope things are going better for you. But Camila is NOT abusive and is the one parenting Luz, not the other way around. What about Luz's or Camila's behavior made you think differently? Luz behaves like the child she is. The whole reason Camila wants to send Luz to camp is because she believes it's best for her. and wants her to be able to socialize with people her own age. That's parenting.
Camila was Luz's biggest fear because she is the closest person to her. Luz has a hard time making friends due to her eccentric personality, but her mother has never tried to limit her (till she brought live snakes to school). Based on all the things that Vee was going to throw out in episode 10, it's obvious her mother has always supported her and let her be the imaginative child she is. So lying to her, especially on this scale, would bother Luz more than anything else.
I think you're reading too much into Luz's flinching as well as her and her mother's behavior. The show has never shied away from depicting abusive relationships (Hunter and Amity) and I'm certain they would have addressed it if that was how she was. I completely agree that many abusers hide behind the guise of "imperfect parents trying their best" and "tough love" but Camila LITERALLY is just trying her best. She hasn't raised Luz perfectly and maybe the camp idea came off as too drastic. But it was just a normal camp that would have been good for Luz. She probably would have made some friends, like Vee did. Everything we've seen of Camila has been kind and I believe that's how she actually is and always puts Luz first. Not emotionally manipulative. NOT a shit mother. Your basis for saying she is would put all mothers into that category. What better way could Camila have acted?

Odalia is a bad mother but in my opinion she’s a good Edition to the story, it gives children watching the show an idea of “hey this behaviors real bad, if an adult where to treat me like this I would tell someone.” Or at least that’s what I like to think, it’s simply my interpretation of it. She’s also a good edition to help develop Amity, not only that she has a lot of potential and if Amity was the mc then Odalia would be a much bigger player in the story. • @jlwiseman98

Honestly I think the reason ppl like belos more then odalia despite his actions being worse is odalia is far closer to home.
Like yeah, philip is a cult leader, abuses his nephew, and he's a tyrant bent on genocide.....but he's also a 300 year old puritan who turns into a goop monster, wears a silly bird mask, gets upset when a teenager makes fun of his clothes, and gets splat by a God child.
He's great obviously as metaphors and showcasing real life manipulatiors, but his character is SO ridiculous in concept that its easier to enjoy him as a fictional character then odalia.
Not to mention we have more of his backstory (i still maintain the fact that he's a tragic villian, so to even a small extent the audience can feel bad for him despite what he did and did to himself).
Odalia is not nearly as goofy, nor do we get sympathetic aspects to her, she is always relentlessly awful and cruel and manipulative and selfish and her behavior is sadly reminiscent of people that do exist and you may be related to. Like there are way more people out there like odalia blight then philip wittebane, and you're far more likely to know someone like her then philip.
Belos is evil but he's also completely ridiculous and easy to goof on.
Odalia never gets too goofy, she stays as realistic as one could get making a selfish manipulative witch mom.
So while belos did worse, the fact the fandom enjoys him far more then odalia makes a lot of sense.

It's easy to hate Odalia for being a horrible person and terrible mother and wife; we're suppose to hate her for that. However, I really hate for being a stupid businesswoman and being so blind as to side with Belos's plan, thinking that she would survive or even benefit from without any real contigencies. She knew the whole plan and still didn't try to make absolutley sure she and "the family" survived. Even if she turned out to be conveless witch (since I've heard people say that she might) and safe from the draining spell, she had a literal army she could take control and use against Belos, stop his plan and come out on top as the Boiling Isle's saviour and likely be recognized as the next ruler. It's like that thought didn't even cross her mind.
Odalia is easily on a list of villains that are the worst of them all simply because if I, or any of us, can come up with a better plan than she did then you know she failed. She's even stupider than Bradford Buzzard (Ducktales 2017).

i think willow and gus getting expelled was for luz’s (and amity’s) character development.
she has shifted from the mindset of “the BI is cool and i wanna learn magic!” to “the BI is home and i put the pressure of saving the world and protecting my friends on myself,” and so her motivation doesn’t come from getting herself back at Hexide but getting Willow and Gus back, self sacrificing as is her norm now. If only Luz got expelled, she may internalize Odalia’s message, accept expulsion, and distance herself from her friends. This would make it harder to have Amity’s arc in the episode bc it’s a moment of sudden danger that pushes her over the edge of snapping the necklace.
I’m not saying there isn’t other, more logical plots for this episode to show this characterization & character growth but it makes sense why they did what they did

Usually, when we see a bad parent in a cartoon, that parent is later shown to have a softer side to them or at least an indication that they deep down they love their kids. But not Odalia. In Watching and Dreaming, we can see Amity reuniting with her father and Odalia just stands there, scowling at them. She doesn't even bother to see if her daughter is alright after everything that just happened. We also don't see her at all in the epilogue. This pretty much shows that Odalia never cared about, or even loved her children, and only saw them as employees.

The character I would first compare Odalia to is Jacques Schnee from RWBY.
And my personal headcanon for Alador is that being forced to work through the fire flu and his staff being laid off made him rethink his attitude.
And thinking on it, I think Escaping Expulsion is missing a scene of Willow giving Odalia a wake up call in the form of thorny vines pointed at her face and the glowing eyes of doom.
For Clouds on the Horizon, we never see Odalia's coven sigil, and when she summons the poster it has the telltale blue of illusion magic. Alador does have a coven sigil. Which means it is entirely possible that she has been cheating the system the entire time with an illusion, and Belos allowed it because he knew that even without being drained, she would be left in a dead world. Being able to see the future, the Oracle Coven would be the biggest threat to Philip's plans, so he made sure the oracles were all blinded by loyalty.

Now I realize that Camila or Eda would be a better fit. Eda has already formed a bond with the twins so becoming a mom to Amity won't be a stretch. Also since Luz and Amity are dating so a relationship of sorts with Camila is inevitable.

This is of course completely fitting for her character.
I however find this to be a complete and utter waste.
The name Blight could not fit her more perfectly. It’s not just a name it’s a description.
Odalia is a horrid, rotten thing that poisons and corrupts everything she touches. Every toxic element her family holds likely had her hand in it from Alador’s neglect to, the twins bullying, to Amity’s coldness. A family that likely could have been very healthy and happy without her was instead a nightmarish thing brining Misery to all it members until the diseased parts were removed and the healing could truly begin.

I know people that keep photos because it's the only source of positivity that still exists and can't part with them for even a second. So yeah, another point to Amity being abused.
Also, I hate to say it, but Odalia is the type of mother that would not get the CPS after her. Not because she is not awful, but for several reasons. One, the agency is so overworked, and the foster system is so broken that they are more likely to ignore mental abuse when they have more server physically abusive cases to process. Amity appears healthy and not physically abused, or at least not enough to leave marks, so it is more likely to ignore. Two it is only very recently that Odolia can be viewed as an abusive mother instead of an overbearing one that pushes their child too far. There are not a lot of procedures to deal with such parents, especially if physical abuse is not apparent. Three, the type of abuse she is forcing Amity through is one that is difficult to prove. She doesn't seem to physically abuse her children, and what mental abuse we do see is more apparent due to the powers of being an audience but is overall subtle. I argue the signs are less obvious if no one with omission powers of being able to watch Amity's life on television would see her as such.
And that is what makes Odalia scary and one I hope gets killed, for how well she could go under the radar and still hurt people with a smile on her face.

Exactly! She didn't shoot down Amity having a girlfriend at all, she merely suggested Amity get a new one. Which is still offensive but she isn't homophobic! :3 if Dana really wanted to tick the fandom off she could have made her homophobic but that's supporting a bad cause, plus it's more interesting for her to not care about the gender because she doesn't care about her children anyway

Odalia just existing makes Moon Butterfly (Star's mother from Star vs the Forces of Evil), Ragyo Kiryuin (Ryuko's mother from Kill La Kill) and Rose Quartz (Steven's mother from Steven Universe) and Linda Stotch (Butter's mother from South Park) look like good mothers by comparison.

The only bare minimum chance I think Odalia has of being redeemed comes from the fact that while she was selfish, greedy, abusive, and cold to her family, she did in her effed up way never seem to think about leaving them behind. She always spoke about them together: "what's best for the family" "we'll be royalty" etc. It's misguided and screwed up, but there's a very, very faint foundation of caring there.
Or maybe the show will end with her being broke and alone, but never regretting her choices....I think it's a 50-50 at best, maybe closer to 70-30

    • @joyc.e.7511
      @joyc.e.7511 Před rokem +9

The thing about her "caring" for her family, is that she still sees them as objects/part of herself. If she eventually understands that they are their own people and accepts that, then I think that eventually she'll become better. I don't like to use the word redeemed, because it makes it sound like someone has been forgiven of everything. I don't think Alador is "redeemed", it's a work in progress. Her family will probably never forgive her, but they might still interact with her, on occasion. But only if they want to.

    • @jaohonaxa
      @jaohonaxa Před rokem +2

@@joyc.e.7511 That's a good way to put it. I don't deny that she is toxic in every sense of the word, but having that barest minimum of care can sometimes pave the way for redemption, but only if she puts in the work, and it would take a LOT of work for her to even start that.

She doesn’t see her family as people, she sees them as business assets. Alador needs to invent things, Amity needs to be the daughter supporting the business and the twins probably asked to stay out of the way because they don’t have any skills Odalia sees as useful to Blight Industries beyond grunt work.
