- The bodies of Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah have been recovered from the tech tycoon's superyacht after it sunk off the coast of Sicily, the Chief of Civil Protection confirmed.
The 184ft-yacht had sunk following a violent spell of weather in the early hours of Monday morning - and while 15 survivors had escaped the vessel, its sinking had sparked a large-scale search effort.

Human error, the captain of the boat 🛥
I've worked on these yachts down in Nice, Canne and Antibes, I was a deckhand / 2nd Engineer and there's always a 24-hour watch, especially at night. The crew is responsible for monitoring all potential threats to the vessel, keeping a close eye on the radar to detect if the anchor drags and the boat starts drifting toward rocks and watching for any unauthorized attempts to board. It looks like someone failed to secure the vessel properly when the storm hit.
You mean they were paid to turn a blind eye?
True.. I was also in Antibes to work on the yachts - stewardess.

The truth
I agree..
Italian authorities say they ate investigating why the keel was withdrawn when it was needed the most, why none of the hatches were closed to prevent flooding, and why none of the passengers were stowed safely during the storm 😳. Any bets they'll find no 'foul play'. Just a strange coincidence that both he and his business partner died days apart and indifferent circumstances following a legal win against a huge corporation
To many questions, 2 partners died something doesn't add up. Poor people who have died. Rest in Peace .

Everyone forgets the tornado like water spout.
Well, two things happened- there was a force of nature that occurred which is something that responsible captains and crew men are prepared for and expected to comply with all the safety procedures. Then second, there were a lot of errors that happened as well. The force of nature was announced so that precautions could take place. The errors occurred because caution most likely was not adhered quick enough.. so what needs to happen is an investigation to where and how the errors happened and who was responsible. Definitely errors happened. That boat filled with so much water where it could not do its job to stay afloat. So here is a question, would a yacht of equal length have sunk as quickly as the sail boat? There are many variables to sort through. Rest in peace to the people who perished and had it been any other group of people of lesser means… they would deserve just as much attention and equally tragic.
If anyone ever tells me a boat is ‘unsinkable’ then I’ll never get on it, look what happened to the titanic

I live in an area that gets many land tornadoes. The bad weather coming in is predicted, but you can not predict where those tornadoes are going to drop out of the sky. It happens so fast, and there they are destroying everything in their path. They can completely destroy a home and not touch the house that is next-door to it. Maybe they could have taken more precautions knowing bad weather was coming, but I doubt that anyone would have known this waterspout was going to hit the Bayesian. I don't know what anyone will gain by prosecuting anyone. Whoever may have been awake was probably terrified, and the others woken up out of their sleep to darkness and water. Just horrifying. May they all rest in peace. Give these families strength.

@@ClaireisVegan Good for you. You would have been wasting your time in this case. The tornado only took 30 minutes to form .Basically the captain had nobody on night watch. On any boat you always have a crew person on watch. To check for freak weather, etc.

Really! Are we going to blame this sudden tragic, unpredictable weather event on any human? 🤔 😕 shut up and wait for full investigation.
It is understandable that the families are going through enormous grief and sadness, but let’s be realistic before we start leaning towards criminal negligence and civil lawsuits. It was an act of God that tipped the sailboat over. Presumably everybody was partying and celebrating into the wee hours of the night. I don’t think anybody can blame anyone for falling asleep or passing out. The boat was anchored off shore. If it was a fire that ripped through the boat and there was no smoke detectors on board, that would be a different scenario.

From what I've read, the keel was up and the hatches were left open. Captain admitted he wasn't monitoring the weather...Negligence by the Captain-- at the very least.
"Unsinkable" Lol, the boat went down in 2 seconds 🤔
Only reason this is a manslaughter is because the victims are supper wealthy. Average people would simply be dismissed as mere statistics and lessons learned
True
Captain should be in prison
You dont know that.

The boat was powered by HP
How tragic! My condolences for the family and friends.
When are big businesses creating sea going vessels going to stop claiming their creation as 'Unsinkable' Have they learnt nothing from history?! Every time they claim things like that I wouldn't get on it if they paid me. Every vessel that has had that proclaimed about it that I know of, has sunk!
A million people around the world had tragedies that day,,but this one is especially tragic,,because they were filthy rich,😊😊😊,
Last time someone said the ship is unsinkable was probably titanic, we all know what happened to it.
It depends if the yacht was anchored just at the bow in which case she would have naturally headed into wind. If she was anchored at both bow and stern then if hit by a wind on either side she will tend to roll and if hatches are open then she would flood and ultimately potentially sink.
Poor girl.
But the crew got off alright
The chef cook was killed.
Really sad 😢
Very sad. But chain of events. The lateral external force (wind force and wave drift force) overturned the vessel Hull beyond its angle of vanishing stability/downflooding angle pushing its righting arm from positive to negative and with the keel raised, the opposing resistance to overturning, the hull stood no chance. At this point the Hull will have violently rotated i.e. pulling the Hull from upright to beyond 90 degrees position. Watertight openings may have been left opening, hence the foundering. The huge mast may have never been subjected to modelled wind forces for tornado strength winds. Certainly for hurricane force winds possibly to a 100 year return period, but not Water Spout force.
As always will be chain of events, including human error.
Negligence by the captain ?
That is not known yet.
@paulinetipper1351 the captain of the yacht is in complete control and responsibility for his passengers. Yet he survived and his passengers did not.
I live facing the docks in Antibes and have sailed Med, Caribbean, SF Bay and TransPac and Kings Cup Thailand all on sailboats. No boat is unsinkable! Arrogance, stupidity and too much fingers pointing! The clearest thing is guests were not responsible! Sad but suspicious!
So very expensive private school education from age 7 to 12 years for Primary school, and then from age 13 to 18 years for Secondary school for one of Mike Lynch's daughter, Ms. Hannah Lynch, in order to achieve her Cambridge A Level certificate, which is not even a work-ready Polytechnic Diploma or yet an University Bachelor Degree. Real pity! It costs an incredible £25,000 per year attending the prestigious Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith afforded by her deceased father. That's a grand total of £150,000 (USD$200,000) assuming over a 6-year continuous period for her Secondary schooling years, bypassing the O Level exams at aged 16. Most foreigners from 3rd world countries pay almost that amount in tuition fees alone just to obtain study visas to get to the UK for a basic 3-year liberal arts Bachelor Degree or a Business Degree to top up their Diplomas or Cambridge-syndicated foreign A Level certs. That begs the question how worthwhile is it for the rich and wealthy in UK and USA to afford prestigious private schooling for their children, putting immense pressure on their mental well-being and "window-dressing" them in order for them to obtain good grades for exams, yet that result in achieving only "unprofessional, non-work ready" qualifications at the adolescent age of 18 or 19 years compared to their less academically-inclined peers who offer to bypass the A Level route to opt for a more skills-based, professional Diploma which enable their skill-sets to be much desired, and thus more attractive to employers at a younger age than University graduates.

A truly awful tragedy and thoughts go out to all those affected both guests and crew a horrendous experience for everyone. I hope that now those lost have now been found, families can begin to grieve. As to the allegations, the captain & crews reputations & licenses are worthless compared to the reputation of a yacht manufacturers (who is currently refitting Putins yacht) so it isn't a surprise that allegations like this are surfacing. However, yacht designers & manufactures need to LEARN from mistakes and stop shifting blame. It would seem that the bigger, the faster, the more luxurious the better - to the detriment to necessary safety features. It's well know that super yachts have to meet standard "safety requirements", which aren't necessarily WHAT the boat NEEDS, each boat is different and that's the difference. If they don't learn by these mistakes and take ownership, these tragedies will continue. It's not fair on the crew or the owners. Many crew members and Captains believe that these safety requirements aren't good enough, yet they aren't listened to. Because of its weight the Bayesian may not have a VDR (usually for 3000 gross tonnes & above) which would be incredibly useful now. The allegations are founded on nothing but cctv footage that does not prove any indication of water being taken onboard. The stern door and lazarette hatch would've been closed - that is SOP. The boat always had the keel raised when sails were down - SOP apparently, although the keel is invaluable for stability and not the fault of the Captain. The mast underwent a refit and the Captain raised concerns, although from the footage I've seen I couldn't make out fully the context, although he is definitely concerned. From the AIS data on the night the time line is completely different to that which is being reported. The had a few minutes. Information from an ex-Engineer who worked on this type of yacht manufactured by Perini Navi said that the lounge doors on the vessel, which are heavy glass would open themselves whilst underway and when the boat heeled over due to their sheer weight. To keep them shut they would have to be manually "dogged" to prevent them opening as these particular doors have a suction seal which doesn't seem to be effective. As there were guests milling around (from witness statements) those doors would've been left open and at anchor there is ALWAYS a crew member on duty - SOP. If any of the hatches were open, they would be open at the sea bed - so why cut a hole in the hull to gain access? I'm not an expert, I'm a concerned super yacht enthusiast, although I couldn't afford a rubber dinghy atm! I want fairness rather than scapegoating!
This event has cast a dark pall over the glamour of yachting and the perceived aura of Dolce Far Niente yachts are associated with

Unreal tragedy, sad that this fine and gifted man should not now be able to enjoy his successes with his love ones after being through the mill for ten years. The legal system in the US favours those who have the money to employ the best defence attorneys it seems, the UK should review its position about returning UK citizens for trial in the US, in my opinion.
Not sure how "fine and gifted" he was. He hired guys to do his dirty bookkeeping for him and was happy enough to see one of them rot in a US prison. Ironically, had he accepted responsibility for cooking Autonomy's books and accepted a prison term instead of fighting the criminal charges, both he and his daughter and the others would still be alive.
