The weather ?
This Yacht had an extremely high mast that probably caught the wind and quickly turned the yacht on its side.
It also had a retractable keel, if the keel was up for some reason, the yacht will have had much less stability to sudden strong winds hitting the mast and rigging.
Windows and hatches might have been open due to the heat which may have contributed to the boat very quickly taking on water.
Anyway, we will see as the investigation continues how it actually came to be...

No other yachts had a 75 metre mast. But - was there a watch or not? There should have been - but at 5 o'clock in the morning had complacency taken hold? We may never know, as those who knew may well be among those that did not survive. The sea is an extremely unforgiving environment. The investigation will reveal what it can, but some things may be lost along with the lost lives.

Tornado squalls tend to happen almost out of nowhere, so it is perfectly feasible.

This has to rank as one of the most idiotic comments I have read. The crew were almost certainly on watch given the strong winds (not because of the tornado). There is no chance of any fault being blamed on the crew or captain. This is an unprecedented event and no one could have predicted this.

We learned today the Mast was intact. imo...the most crucial item to maintain the stability of the vessel at anchor was to have the Keel extended to help stabilize and counter weight the force of the storm. However, normally the Keel is retracted at anchor. I fear the crew did not react quickly enough and lower the Keel when the storm was approaching and therefore left the vessel vulnerable to the quick nature of the forces that were to bring her down.

...its strange , there also weather bullettin alert....the captain for sure knew that, the yatch has very sophisticated instrumentation. why the boat was in open water with this dangerous weather? how is possible all the other people were safe, even if it was 5 am and the crew cabins usually are in the very remote space in the boats?
How is possible the Linch's wife wasn't with. her husband and their dougther was there insteead? i have a lot of doubt, everything shoud be investigated very carefully as even other important people involved in the trials were involved...and the Linch co-defendant was killed two days before as well. Dude I was on the USS Nassau (LHA-4, just over 833 feet long ship) when we where hit by a single wave that knocked us 35 degrees to starboard and nearly capsized us. Witnesses SAW this boat get hit by a waterspout. With it's over 230 foot tall mast, it was going which ever way that spout wanted, sail or no sail out.

She never got her chance for a life. just heart breaking for all their family and friends at least they can now be laid to rest. RIP. As a person who has lived by the ocean for 72 years and an avid sailor, I believe it was extreme negligence by the captain and crew to not have been awake and monitoring weather conditions for the safety of the passengers and vessel. The weather was unstable, 19 weather spouts in the previous day yet everyone was asleep on a boat equipped with the most sophisticated equipment to deal with bad weather.
Seriously, if you were in an area where 19 tornadoes had occurred that day, would you be sleeping without a weather alert radio next to you? When we have tornado producing weather, I stay awake to watch the radar to insure that I can get loved ones into our safe space in the event of circulation. Responsible people live through many of these storms.

Probably because there is minimal or no mystery about the tragic deaths in Southport, so no opportunity for the media (conventional media and amateurs) to speculate. In the yacht's case, even professional mariners don't know the reasons for the yacht's sinking, and we need to wait for the investigation report. Several people aboard were wealthy and high profile, so news about them will attract the curious and the envious. That sells newspapers and attracts TV viewers.

The entire boat flipped in seconds, literal seconds. It was blown over quickly in one go. It wasn't a slow leak or anything.

@@alexbowman7582 Imagine the room you're in turns sideways and everything including you not nailed down falls against the wall furthest from the door now. Now look up if you can. Your door is already being pressed by a wall of water if it hasn't blown out at you. Even if you can get to and open the door which is now a ceiling hatch the rush of water will overwhelm you and disorientate you as you're smashed to bits.

I read earlier Mr. Lynch and wife were in their cabin and were woken by a tilt of the ship. Wife went to see what happened, why didn’t he follow you wonder. Maybe went to find daughter. The location where they were found may give some insight. I suspect the other couples were in their cabins. Very sad for passengers and crew regardless of how wealthy they are.
*Who is on deck of a yacht in this weather at 5 a.m.?* Trust me, I suffer from insomnia and know exactly when the sun is scheduled to rise; at the moment it is 06.30 around the longitude next to Zurich, in the Mediterranean it would have been half to one hour earlier - if not pitch black, then about very dim first light, in choppy wave conditions..
Under those circumstances *I doubt that ANYBODY in their sound minds would have slept at all,* because the storm had already raged all evening IIRC. I would have been on edge and tested the safety equipment and exit strategies.
And my constant question: *what about the alleged baby on board?!?* For this passenger alone they should have returned to port, and they would likely have been assigned an emergency berth or such!
The longer this goes on, the more questions I personally have as an interested and shocked observer.
Having sailed the world, If I was the captain I would have ensured that the lifting keel was down. Had it been down the yacht would probably have not gone all the way over.
