    Glad to see that I'm not the only enthusiast with an interest in early flintlock rifle construction. A vital link to the frontiersman, hunter's, trapper's, and trail guides that made a place for themselves and a great many other's that may follow. A item of both utility and beauty, the American Flintlocks were made by many European Settler's that learned their indispensable trades in the old world, and brought the final form into being. This young man has brought to the world a long forgotten legacy of hard wearing, and delicacy in design that many have replaced with arms of less function and far little grace. My thanks.

      Yes. A flintlock isn’t considered a firearm in America anymore.

    • @frogbear02
      @frogbear02 Před dnem

      while it is true that the ATF doesnt consider black powder weapons made, or of a model/type that predates the 1900s firearms any longer, its also important to note that this would be legal even if it were considered a firearm.
      the only part of a gun that is considered "the gun" is its receiver (were this considered a gun legally speaking, it would probably be the lock that would be THE rifle). so you would be totally fine to make, assemble, and sell stocks and what have you to go with your premade lock, just the same as you are allowed to put a sling on your rifle.
      but even beyond THAT, in almost every state you can legally manufacture your own guns so long as they belong to you and only you until the day of their destruction, so its fine there too (though there are caveats, like minimum length requirements, barrels must be rifled if shooting rifle or pistol rounds, and no full auto or select fire weapons, etc.) but yeah, point is, its not legally a firearm, and even if it were, itd still be legal

    Is there a layman explanation for what a swamped barrel is? I read it's sort of like 2 cones joined at both the smaller sides, like the breach starts wide then it tappers down then it flares again. But does that happen inside the barrel only? which is why I can't see it on the surface of the octagon shaped barrel? or is it so subtle that I didn't notice it?

    • @goldenmeanflintlocks9713
      @goldenmeanflintlocks9713  Před měsícem

      It’s only on the outside. There are what are called Tapered, straight and Tapered and flared (swamped) barrels. If you can’t see transitions looking down the outside of the barrel, it’s probably a straight barrel. They tend to be more end heavy. Tapered and flared (swamped) takes the nose weight out.

    • @goldenmeanflintlocks9713
      @goldenmeanflintlocks9713  Před 2 lety

      There’s nothing wrong at all with doing a kit for your first time until you get the hang of it. My very first one was a kit. After you get the hang of which rasps, files and chisels you need, it’s just as easy to build one from a blank. In fact, I prefer blanks over kits mainly because I can build one just about as fast either way and I can build it to fit the customers length of pull and drop that they need to properly fit them.

      You’re correct. I’ll have more videos in the future showing this. There’s only 9 people in the entire nation that can still forge a barrel successfully that we know of. Most of them live in VA. I build these for a living and have to make them affordable. A completely handforged rifle costs between 35-50 thousand dollars.

      It varies. There a difference barrel weights that you can purchase. This one is an A weight. Since it’s octagonal and also a tapered and flared (swamped) barrel, the outside measurement is constantly changing. But the thinnest part is about 7/8 of an inch.
