- Watch me attempt to get this cold blooded Ford Transit diesel running in not so cold temps. How much glow plug, grid heater, and fire action does it take to get it going?

York's were notoriously hard to start in the winter months here in the UK, my mate used to have a permanent rubber pipe from under the dash through the bulkhead into the air filter for a squirt of ether to start...
A rope around the bumper was standard. The Toyota Hiace finished the transit for years. It would start in any weather the diesel that is.
The cold start, you need to hold accelerator full on and push the black button on the side of your diesel pump in
Mine would NEVER start in the winter without a squirt of dope.
they never did from new, i worked on these when they were new & they took ages to go & you'd have to use ether in them until we fitted 'Start Pilote' systems
Hi from across the pond. When the engine is cold you really need to keep the Thermostart (intake heater) glowing while you’re cranking. You need to be drawing flames into the combustion chambers while the engine is turning to stand any chance. Also the excess fuel button on the side of the injection pump will make a difference.
every workman in Britain had a hole drilled in the air filter casing, + squirted ether straight down it's neck from november to april each year
there was also a little bit of nylon tow rope jammed in the front leaf spring, off where you towed it, when somebody had "borrowed" your can for their truck + brought it back empty...
15 inch wheels were on the later transits, but not 100% they will fit
the early specialist 4WD police/fire versions [up to 83] used 16 inch rims which do fit, but are like rocking horse $hit to get
unless you chuck a turbo on, she won't like the taller gearing...
I can't speak for Europe, I've never been, but here in Britain, there was a bigger version called the "A Series" - Effectively a Transit on steroids. It looked the same, just a whole lot bigger, and with a six cylinder York engine. It was capable of hauling a three ton load (and then some, but legally it was a three ton truck).
One problem you're up against is that the glow plugs should be energised right up to and including starting. By the time you've let go of your piece of wire, walked back to the cab, climbed in and started turning the engine, all the heat has gone - soaked up into the cold iron of the engine. Once you get that cold start sequence sorted out, you'll find starting will be easier.
As an aside, the six cylinder York had "Start Pilot" - basically a built in ether start system, but that had to be used sparingly, otherwise you ran the risk of wrecking the piston rings - as my brother discovered with his A Series.
in the late 80s we had a 5cyl A series, the cold start bit fell apart + went down the manifold, damaging the inlet valve on no6... it was ok though, being a recovery vehicle, it never dropped below max revs all day, so it never got fixed, 70mph downhill for 4yrs, until the front wheel + drum fell off + crushed a chelsea pensioner, but that is another story...
They where Hellish to start a lot of folk. Would convert them to the v6 petrol. I know of a few folk that converted them to the Td5 Land Rover engine. I think if it was mine id probably go down the ford v6 road nice upload buddy 👍🔧
I remember many years ago my school had one of these as a compact school bus in this same red colour, not seen one of these for years, hi from across the pond.
I see a intake heater assmbly coming up, the ones that are used on some Cummings intakes, consisting of some heated blades that the air is forced through while cranking, similar to the glow plug and injector that is now installed, should work like the hair dryer trick, that some already suggested.
Thx for the update video!
👍👍👍
There were overdrive options for the MK1 Transit, usually only on the big V6's which gives you a lot of options gearbox wise. I think the bolt pattern would be the same for the Lima Pinto box and the South American 4.0 Cologne which are both 5 speeds, stateside outside of the Lima, the Cologne was fitted to a fair few pickups and there is of course the Merkur XR4Ti and Scorpio that use the same pattern gearbox arrangement. I know the South Africans had a Windsor V8 powered model so the V8 engine mounts are out there meaning you can put in a V8 of your choice if that is something you might be considering. Reliant Scimitar has the awesome Ford Essex 3 litre V6 which was in its own right a really good option for a MK1/2 Transit, cruise all day at 70 and get there pretty quick. Ford's UK Pinto at 2.0 was plenty power enough to run the van 70 or more and not sluggish either and a popular tow package on breakdown Transits, the Lima is a much bigger version that will drop straight in and you can inject or turbo up that one. Now if you wanted to be really lary with it all, find a scrapper Ford Scorpio, not the MK3 Ford Granada version but the later futuristic one that flopped, the 2.9 Cosworth Ultima with the computer controlled gearbox and just about the best Cosworth engine ever made would give you frightening pick up and go, might have to uprate the diff to a Jag one to handle the higher power.
Waste of time here. The Transit he has can and were ran flat out foot to floor . It wont drive a 5speed. I had the 2.0 pinto single throat carb and it had trouble doing 70
I think your wrong about the overdrive as I had 1 with the perking diesel with overdrive.
I told you before you need to push the cold start in on the diesel pump its the button stuck out on the stop lever with the black corrugated rubber on it
Try transit parts uk for spare parts
I remember years gone by. I would start mine with the wife,s hair dryer stuck up the air intake.
Try to advance the injection pump timing some that may help with the cold starts
I know owners who drained the oil each night below 0c and re filled it each morning to aid starting.
Some people would heat the oil sump and even the diesel tank to help out.
No block heaters in uk that’s why Diesel engines were so hard to sell.
Amazing when they are running.
Kenlowe make a Block Heater.
Hello! Some of us use a heat gun or a hair dryer to heat it before starting and it works better, try that, it doesn't fail, greetings. 👋🏻
Surplus fuel button on side of injector pump to cold start it, press it in , with Accelerator wide open dont touch accelerator pedal till engine fires and has run for 10 second's or so, the cold tart resets automatically.
My grandpa would stick a heat gun in the intake while cranking
The Later 2.5 Direct Injection 'Banana' Transit Diesel Starts straightaway with no Glow Plugs ..
the Banana was derived from the original York Diesel.
There is an excess fuel button thats o]pressed in at the side of the pump lever.
I have a genuine ford rear light cluster for that transit
I expect that 90 percent of us will tell you one thing about getting that to start, York diesel’s were notorious for being stubborn to start without getting a shot of ether down the throat. In cold weather like that doesn’t matter if the pre-heat is working, use ether every time or your just freezing your ass off for no reason.
You got to have the gas pedal pressed when you push in cold start button.
you need to press throttle fully down then press coldstart button you should hear it click
York diesels where one of the worst diesels to cold start . My dad had a couple of old transits in his relay fleet years ago.
They had more nick names then any other vehicles he owned 😂
It needs new glow plugs.
They and the air pre-heat need to be on while it's cranking.
Do you planning ever to sale this car?
I’ve noticed you’re still not using your coolant switch, it’s on side of your diesel pump are full on and push it in
Cool, start on your pump won’t engage, unless you put your accelerator in full
use the excess fuel device on the side of the pump
You need to crank it at the same time as the flame heater is igniting it doesn’t work the same a glow plugs
