  • Knife sharpening on a my Tormek T-8
    Sharpening a Morakniv 106 on my Tormek, using the carving knife jig SVM-00, standard stone SG-250 and Japanese 4000 grit SJ-250.
    Ideally it would be best to put the knife on a flat stone. That'll be in my next videos!
    Anyways, it's insanely Razor Sharp!!! :)

    Hi Jonas, thanks for posting this vid. I really wish we could see the knife after you initially check it's in the right spot so we know what to look for. I'd also like to see how you do all the adjustments to get it in the right spot. I'm new to the T8 and I cannot find one video that actually explains all the details of knife sharpening. There should be a video for dummies haha! If you have any links or suggestions I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

    Thank you for posting this video, I really enjoyed it! I am looking to purchase a t-4 to sharpen knives and such as a side hustle. I am still learning and don't know everything, and I'm willing to admit when I am wrong so feel free to teach my young blade brain! Im curious why you had the stone grinding into the blade instead of away, are there any benefits or drawbacks to either technique?

    Hi. I'm still trying to figure this sharpening thing out. I thought the Japanese stone was 4000 grit and the honing is about the same. If it's the same (not sure it is?) grit what advantages do you get from honing at the same grit level? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

      I'm not sure about a tormek wheel/strop combo( I hand sharpen), but generally the idea of stropping is that the material bends slightly around the edge and helps polish off the last small burrs. A straight leather strop is much finer than a 4k stone( though a tormek 4k could be finer than other 4k stones) , and if you charge your strop with something like chromium oxide or diamond paste it will be finer yet. All that being said, ultra fine grit edges are really only good for shaving and woodworking. You're better off going up to 4-6k and stropping with leather or newspaper to finish. Hope this helps.

      @@talderson1 no problem. I re-read your initial question regarding honing and sharpening on the same grit...sorry I didn't answer it more directly. In short the honing wheel is probably not the same grit, but if it is it would come down to what it's made out of affect how the cutting agent interacts with the primary bevel. Also, if you watch closely he's running the honing wheel the opposite direction of the grinding wheel...which makes a difference as well. Sorry, not so short again. If you have any specific questions...I'm happy to help. I'm a professional sharpener as well. Happy 4th.

    Doesn’t this ruin the Scandinavian flat bevels and create a hollow grind since the radius of the circle is round? Surely better to use flat water stones

    • @formgjortbyJonasAls
      @formgjortbyJonasAls  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Boris!
      Well, it depends on whjat you want. Sure, this makes the knife insanely sharp, but not very durable. The ideal sharpening is to make a hollowgrind and then touch it up on a flat stone. You should try it, it makes the carving easier, and the knife easier the sharpen to. Barn the Spoon use it all the time.
      I know I should have added it to the video :D
      Cheers dude :)

    Many errors in this video. Look for other videos.
    NEVER ever use a stone grader on a Japanese stone.
    NEVER user the leather wheel after using the Japanese stone.

    • @userthor7386
      @userthor7386 Před 4 lety +1

      Sorry, but Tormek recommends to clean the Japanese waterstone with the fine side of the stone grader. Even when using the Japanese waterstone for a mirror finish there has on several occasions been a microscopic Wire edge afterwards which I knock of with the honing wheel. Just 1 og 2 slow passes on each side, with the Only force used against the honing wheel bring the weight of the knife. See knife grinders video on sharpening Japanese knives regarding the same topic.

      @@userthor7386 Yes, you are right Jack. I checked their homepage. Tormek recomend cleaning the Japanese stone using the Stone grader. Thank you for pointing this out to me. I think many Tormek user doesn't know this.
      They also recommend not to use the leather wheel after using the Japanese stone: "Eftersom den ger så fin yta rekommenderar vi att du inte brynar på läderbrynskivan efteråt.".

      You can and should lap or dress your stones periodically. Japanese or not....it makes no difference. In fact in Japan they use a hammer like tool to dress the large wheel grinders that knife makers use.
