I'm not sure why I had not had this thought before: "...Space Wolves are a fantasy army that happens to inhabit the Imperium". IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!
Wow I was just some wolf man thing, and now I have a gun!
Imperial Guard Captain: *Looks at Leman Russ Exterminator* "... Sure, you can have them. We definitely arent using them!"
Space Wolf Captain: NOT USING THEM?! You mean to insult Russ' name by denying it glorious battle?
@@ErwinPommel "Er... On the contrary, Lord Astartes. We simply have too many Leman Russ tanks, and not enough drivers, so these would otherwise never see battle. Please, take them, so they may honor Russ by doing battle alongside his sons."

"Not now, Sergeant."

I would love a video on the history of base rims.
Seconded
To kick things off, after combing through my codexes it looks like the 3.5 Chaos Space Marines book was the last one to feature Goblin Green rims on a studio army. So there's a bit of extra base rim trivia.
What about basing in general?
Hooobloodyray! I love this series. (I also consider the first word to be the correct portmanteau as this is how I said it in my head when I saw this pop up)
They could call it "A Deepdive Into Rimming".
He's not a 1991 Empire Flagellant. He's a very naughty boy.
Great! Also, do a livestream where you read the codex out loud, and drink every time you say "wolf".
Bran Redmow.
His front lawn is really HARDCORE.
just like killing orcs, it starts off green, but when you mow your lawn, it turns red.

[Looking at Marine in the background] I have never seen this man before in my life.
Wib, you've discovered why you have *so many* subscribers. Long winded investigations into base rimming is what we're here for.
The idea of a Rogue Trader slowly freaking out and declaring, "WHY ARE ALL YOUR HOMEWORLDS SO AWFUL!?" just amuses me.
Concerned Rogue Trader is pure gold.
Enmity being equal towards the Dark Angels and Thousand Sons funnily enough does become justified when the Angels also invaded Fenris years later.
Because Dark Angels are heretics, assholes, heretic assholes and just generally suck. *WOLVES FOR LIFE!!!*
They had it coming.
The Swibsons are the most important part of the WH community.
They're the main reason that I stay in the community.
Fun fact: 'chooser of the slain' is a direct translation of the Old Norse word 'valkyrja', or valkyrie.
It's the same 'val' as in 'valhalla', which means 'hall of the slain'.
I seem to recall wolves being Snipe's favorite faction.
I think they've mentioned it once or twice in passing... /s
I got one of the Leman Russ only a couple of weeks before the next CODEX released, so I didn't even have it painted before I couldn't use it anymore.
I also remember in 5th edition they still couldn't teleport, but they could put terminators in drop pods, so I ran a Grimnar's company Terminator "Wolf Wing" army (similar to Dark Angels Deathwing, but with drop pods) and turn 1 point blank heavy/combi flamers really ruined quite a few Ork armies.
There is further Haakon continuity in the Codex, which I love. The inset story on page 7 has two Fenrisian tribesmen arguing about legends of Wolf Priests taking injured warriors, and one claims to have seen a priest take his comrades Haakon and Asal. Then in the story about Haakon's Test of Morkai that you mention, Haakon remembers his "blood brother Asal" dying during the Trial of the Thunderwolf. This attention to detail in these codices gives 3rd edition a special place in my hear.
Plus I love how most of it was from in universe story teller and less matter of fact from an all knowing narrator.
The button-up shirt, pendant, and your nicely trimmed hair all go really well together. I'm digging the look.
Edit: I'd happily watch a 28 minute video on basing history. Hell, I'd watch a whole series on all the different aspects of basing.
I love that bit about van Heppel, because that's how a lot of real-world history was written. In days of yore especially, but even today your best source for this stuff is often just some dude who reckons he knows.
They managed to get around the fact that Space Wolves "wouldn't get in no teleporter" by secretly drugging them before departure by spiking their milk. The enraged Space Wolf would then awaken in the combat theatre and attack the nearest enemy.
Nice reference. I like it.
I played space wolves for several editions and would always for my own amusement run a character whose name was Max Wolfington, who was designed to contain the most variations of the word wolf in his wargear.
For those wondering, Max peaked in 5th ed, when he could be a wolf lord of the Wolfkin, joined by Thunderwolf Cavalry and his 2 trusty wolves and Thunderwolf Mount, armed with 2 wolf Claws, a wolftooth necklace and wolf talisman as well as the Mark of the Wulfen.
Get you someone who looks at you like Snipe looks at Bran Redmow.
(I feel like I've made a version of this joke on a different video)
Ah, 3rd Edition codices... The ones I grew up with when I started 40k. While very nostalgic, I don't really miss how they were so simplified and condensed.
“The wolf-themed Space Vikings we know and hate.” - fixed that for ya, sincerely a Thousand Son.
😜
Also, I’d like to state for the record, that we’ve actually invaded the Space Puppy homeworld twice currently. First was in the 32nd millennium when Magnus trashed their genestock and doomed them to no successor chapters (at least until Cawl came along and fixed it), and the second was in the 41st which was used to fuel a ritual to teleport Sortiarius from the Eye of Terror to the Prospero system.
Ima be honest. The phrase "Just as Russ intended" has the same energy as "Just as the founding fathers intended."
Also the idea that they are a Fantasy Army that just so happens to be in 40k is kinda dope.
"About time Guys", O for Awesome, this was the Codex I started with and played my Wile'Es Coyotes 13th& Half Company, in my 1st Tournament with, I remember Some GW worker wasn't happy with my army's background fluff about there feud with the Dark "RoadRun" wing and some of my company banners displaying a certain cartoon creature. but it was my kiwi humor
You know, I think I remember something about this codex, cause that little snipped on the Leman Russ tank seems familiar.
I think my friend had some 3rd Ed Wolves, cause I DISTINCTLY remember that model of tank, and more specifically the modification he made to it to have a homebrew statue of Russ on its engine block, so when it was on the table, the Russ would lead a pack of Marines into battle and it looked relaly really cool.
I started playing with this codex. And literally no one believed me I needed 1 HQ per 750 points
The rule is hard to spot if flipping through the codex and unique, I believe in all of 3rd edition.
Great Job!!!! I've been waiting for this. Your enjoyment shows. Surprised you got it (or kept it) down to 16 minutes. I'd have been happy with another 10 or so minutes of blathering. :) Really did enjoy the bit about the bases!
Space Wolves squads were great back then, they were the same price as Space Marine tactical squads but came with sprues of chainswords and power weapons etc. As a Black Templars player this was *really* handy.
Ahh top heavy models. My brother and I used to melt down airgun pellets to make solid lead bases to counteract then. Took a lot of filing too. We probably inhaled a lot of lead dust.
I loved the Space Wolves during this edition (3rd). They were a very tough force to reckon with!
I have space wolves since late 3rd/early 4th never saw the second space marine until now, and i've spent hours looking at that cover image xD
Hey! It's the one codex I still have! I'm biased, but I think it's the best 3rd Edition cover. It's dynamic in a way I don't recall any of the others being. I think it really shows off how peculiar and ancient the Space Wolves really are. The Pre-Heresy like colour scheme helps sell that and always grabbed my attention. And this was a good 8 years or so before GW had really started fleshing out that era. It was still mostly shadows, smoke, and whispers at that point.
My first codex. Still holds a special place in my heart
I still have my Space Wolves army, haven't played for more than 10 years but I still lovingly hold onto it. All my other stuff have been sold but this is the one army I can't let go of. I put a lot of work into it, almost every model is converted in some way.
I'd take 3rd Ed over 9th anytime. Loved this codex, so much more character.
What I love of the older codexes and army books is that they show some neat conversions within their pages
For the record: paragraphs on trends in base rimming are exactly the kind of reason I am delighted to have, and remain subscribed! Another fun dive 😁
Quite a large part of my collection dates from about 3rd/4th edition. So I still use the green base edge to tie in new units as I'm too lazy to repaint everything or think up anything new.
Also I like the goblin green edges.
Fight me.
You two are amazing. As a new player, I'm taking a deep dive into the history of Warhammer, and these videos are brilliant. Liked and subbed!
Just a little tip bit about 3rd edition special characters.
They were all released in a white dwarf article with every named character they had models for at the time.
Was amazing seeing them all together if they were very simple.
I found a copy of this in a cupboard on the third floor of a building near Machynlleth, and I also have the prototype in White Dwarf 231, which contains blond Ragnar!
The same issue also contains an Ultramarines/Guard vs 'Nids game in two parts, where one of the tactical squads is made from nine 2nd edition marines and one 3rd edition marine, and another is the opposite.
I actually agree on SW being able to take a single Leman Russ Exe. It's fluffy and is cool (and for GW it would generate an extra tank sale for their SW player population).
I'd agree with SW also being sensible enough to not trust teleportation, but I figure that a lot of competitive tabletop players would get really booty-bothered if that were taken away from them for fluff reasons (that, and the Deep Strike/Reserve rules for 9th are so different in comparison to 3rd ed.).
This was still the current codex when I fell in love with the Space Wolves. They were so full of character, with the fact that their background _and_ rules encouraged modeling, army building and painting creativity. I loved the modifications to the force org chart, including wolf guard leaders. Even if it was just head canon, you could build a force where not just the named characters but every model could have a background, history and a list of fun or impressive things they had done in their carrer.
I will never forget the pack leader, last survivor of his pack, who managed to punch a Landspeeder, screaming past him, out of the skies for the game win - twice in a row. I didn’t need to write his name on his base, everyone in my gaming group knew Dietrich! =D
I sold my Wolves twice, but I still kept a Runepriest and a converted Ragnar, posed like the current model.
Thank you for this trip down memory lane!
The fact that you had a whole section on the trends in base rim coloring is EXACTLY why I'm subscribed :)
0:42 - Alpharius? Impossible! No one's ever been able to find him!
Nice to hear about my first army in 40k i was 13 at the time i bought this codex though i moved on from space were wolves to space vampires i still have my old codex and metal/plastic long fangs they still fall over when i play them to this day making new players scratch there heads when they first see it
I appear to be the target market for digressions about GW basing styles, because I heard your comments and wanted to point out that the Goblin Green base and rim era only really got into its stride about the time that 4th edition Warhammer Fantasy and then 2nd edition 40k came out. For most of the Rogue Trader era GW seemed to use a wider variety of basing styles and the super vibrant reds and greens that many seem to associate with all pre-2000 Warhammer models weren't that much of a thing until the early-mid nineties... It turns out I am weirdly defensive about my first era of miniature gaming and am keen to separate it out from the more cartoony paint schemes that followed!
Also, Cybernoid 2, yeah!
Wolf noise
As far as the two grudges, didn't the Thousand Sons not invade Fenris until like 7th edition lore? So wouldn't that grudge be more one sided, with the Thousand Sons being pissed about Prospero, and the Wolves just being like "Oh fuck those guys, they never shit up about that time we kicked their asses"
Yeah, War of the Fang was a much later addition to the lore (and the second invasion was tied to TSons getting their own range in 2016), but you can contextualize it as TSons warbands and Sorcerers taking every chance they had to get revenge on the Wolves for Prospero, causing the conflict between them to escalate from "Wolves holding a regular-sized grudge against Chaos traitors" to "Wolves absolutely despising their sworn enemies".
@@sofija1996 In the Space Wolf novel there are also some TSons lead by a Sorcerer up to no good in some caves on Fenris. So I guess they tried even more times than just the two in more modern fluff pieces.
@@AJKiesel I'm aware, but also we don't talk about that absolute loser.

The box art of this codex lowkey resembles a homage to the original Doom cover art.
Wib, your beard is looking flipping radiant in this one. Lovely job!
Was Snipe's epic Viking hair a deliberate choice for this vid?
Also stuff like the base rim cometary is EXACTLY why I watch!
I have the distinct impression that this chapter likes wolves...
i like that the Rule “True Grit” lets you carry a Bolter single handed, because in the Space Marine game the perk that lets Assault Marines carry a Bolter is called “True Grit.” Cool reference i never knew of, Thanks!
When I ran with the Space Puppies army I created an Iron Wolf army based around 3 Land Raider variants, couple of Razorbacks, attack bike squadron, 2 bike squadrons, Land Speeder squadron, the Exterminator, obligatory Rhinos and a few other bits and bobs such as Predators. There was so much heavy metal it was inevitable my army got into combat and often the enemy spent so much time trying to take down the Land Raiders (in particular the Crusader with it's payload of Blood Claws) that I was asked to stop using it. The only armies that really gave me trouble was Orks (numbers mostly but the Exterminator was lethal to them in return) and Eldar (anti-armour weapons but again Exterminator). All told I had around, I think, an 8 or a 9k army without upgrades and the reason I played the Sons of Russ is that they was so versatile compared to many other chapters of the time., that and they had some of the best miniatures both from GW and Forge World.
Another bit of trivia, one of the war gear items was suggested by me and used by GW in the codex. Sadly I've not played 40k since around the 4th Ed and had been with 40k since it's inception Rogue Trader. I also had a small Sam-Hain army as well, mainly because I value speed and mobility with a nasty punch. That and seeing the opponents face when they realise they've got a very mobile army on their door step. Many players didn't know how to deal with armour but to be fair 3rd Ed. didn't make it precisely easy especially after GW gutted all the fun weaponry!
Rewatching this a year later, and just realized the border on the cover is wolves rather than the traditional wings.
I started playing 40k at the start of 4th ed & this was my first army. My first conversion was even the LRE! I remember using the spotlight to cover where I cut the battle cannon and I cut up and modified some lascannons to be the auto cannons, & I took it every game with triple heavy bolter and storm bolter!
The 36pt long fang pack leader who'd always be the first to die, my coke can drop pods for the terminators, the blood claws being able to take a power fist for every 5 models rounding up, dishing out 12 power fist attacks on the charge! The wolf scouts appearing behind enemy lines with some melta guns and an extra pack leader.
I loved that army so much. When they finally got updated in 5th edition they lost lots of flavourful rules (though they became one of the most dominant armies of 5th edition they no longer felt like my old SW, also they took away my LRE!
I started with that book shortly after 4th Edition launched. Fun times. I saw that second Marine on the cover back then, but it took me some time to see it too.
Regarding restrictions: Your characters and Wolf Guard couldn't take Jump Packs back then as they preferred to fight with both legs on the ground just as Russ intended. But some Blood Claws who didn't know better yet could be equipped with them for special missions. That too was a fun restriction that got dropped with the 5th Edition book.
Also, regarding Bran 'Redmow': as I have the German book, where he is named 'Bran Rotklaue' (meaning 'Bran Redclaw') I never made the connection to Bran Redmaw and just thought it was a differend Lod named 'Bran'.
Someone in my teenage 3E gaming group played Space Wolves, and flocked his bases with coconut.
With *raw* coconut.
I have never encountered a more disgusting army. Nurgle players take note.
10:50 That kinda reminds me of the lore you can find in Horizon Zero Dawn about the major tribes. It's all written from one guys perspective and his information isn't always accurate because sometimes he can only get second hand knowledge about them. Such as the Nora who have strict restrictions against outsiders entering their sacred lands.
I firmly believe that 3rd edition 40k was the best edition, because it feels like the last time we really see the fluff mix with the mechanics in a meaningful way. Sure, it was a bit more restrictive in force org, but there were reasons for it tied in the lore. I was never more immersed in 40k than when I was playing 3rd, and no other edition since felt like anything more than a tournament game.
This was so well done!
That's the Codex I had the most playtime and fun with. Used a Ven Dread and a Runepriest whenever possible to honor Bjorn (who was the reason I picked the Space Wolves as my army in late 2nd) and Njal. I liked the restraints they had put on army composition and I actually kept the you-need-an-Iron-Priest-if-you-want-to-use-vehicles-other-than-Rhinos from 2nd, too.
By the way, the Space Wolf on the Codex cover later served as the basis for Krom Dragongaze.
Fantastic video. CANNOT WAIT FOR ANOTHER REDMOW HUNGERS
Just so you know, I'm finally subscribing because of your treatise on base rimming. Make of that what you will
Always wanted a Space Wolves army
That cover art is so nostalgic to me and I've seen it on my dad's space wolf box for years and years but I've only recently noticed the second marine, I also thought the dead ork at the front didn't have a head
I still have all these codex’s in a box somewhere oh the memories
I know I'm in the minority, but I loved 3rd even with all it's warts. I started in 2nd, but really got into the lore and what not in 3rd when it became its own thing instead of a mishmash of scifi, parody, and AD2000 comics with the serial numbers filed off. But...it still didn't take itself 100% serious and grimdark-y as later editions did. It was a good sweet spot, IMO.
Also the heady rush of blasting rhinos across the board and murdering everything before your opponent got a turn. Good times.
Another great episode, and a nice finisher to the trifecta of Space Marines But Slightly To The Left books!
Roguetrader, "All of your homeworlds are all terrible! Why are you bragging about this?!"
Space Marines stare at her, silently, in a Yorkshire Accent.
Ah, I used to love being able to teleport my Terminator Wolf Guard in to the enemy and just watch them shred stuff.
It was a sad loss in 3rd...
All discussions about Goblin Green bases should triple subscribers!
I might be a little biased admittedly :-P
god i love this series soo damn much
You all need more subscribers. Will be praying to the ruinous powers to make it so.
Something tells me that Haakon would get along swimmingly with the Catachan Jungle Fighters, mainly with both swapping stories about how their respective planets suck and yet are cool
one funny fact, the space wolf Marine named Haakon, has the same name as the current crown prince of norway. Also in norwegian two a-s are pronounced å, so, like our Håkon.
I always thought the enmity between Space Wolves and Dark Angels was hilarious once I realized it was a "cats vs dogs" joke.
BASE RIMMING. Something I didn't know I needed to know about, but am glad I do now. 🤙🏼
I very well remember the evil, melta bomb throwing scouts coming from the oponents deployment zone... In tournaments I always had 30 gretchins blocking the whole outside of my deployment zone so the scouts couldnt come out of reserve and my basilisk stayed safe 😅
7:58 The way the Emperor intended.
Codex Series. The best.
Who wants to give a baby a balm....
UGH, I miss when the game didnt have Force Organization Charts. I liked it when you could build the majority of an army of one unit type, like all Devastators, Bikers, and so on. Also this brings up massive nostalgia for 3rd edition Warhammer 40k. I was a fan buying every codex and army book from until 2007, then I stopped when I saw 40k was all about making Tournament lists for Space Marines.
The Space Wolf codex from 3rd edition wasnt something I liked much after examining it. The Blood Claws were the first Space Marines I ever saw with a Weapon and Ballistic skill worse than 4/4+. There were numerous penalties to unit numbers so instead of say 10 Blood Claw Bikers/Jump Troops, you had 8 if I remember right. Wolf Scout were Elites instead of troops and their numbers were reduced. Long Fangs were capped at 5 per squad and only 4 heavy weapons.Wolf Guard being capped at 20 per army. That was horrific when you consider they were no just the Terminators but also the Veteran Squad Leaders that basically every squad would desire for the +1 Leadership, and "Hidden Powerfist". Heavy weapons in the army were rare. Space Wolves were written to be better at Melee, worse at Ranged. That meant the army suffered a lot in larger point battles.
But it did introduce me to the True Grit rule. I thought that basically every "elite" army should have True Grit on every model to combine Melee and Ranged units into hybrids. 20+ years later I still want Space Marines with have Bolters and Chainswords in combination as standard.
I like this Codex very much. Sadly i didnt had the skill or money to get a SW army as i started wh40k with 3. Edition (so it was Ultramarines 😅) but now i am older and have more money! So tomorrow is my first game of third edition with space wolves 🎉 and thank you snibe and wib for bringing me back nostalgia road to oldhammer. 😊😊
Awesome video as allways. I am not quite sure if Codex Demonhunters or how they are calling it today "Grey Knights" (*yuck*) needed the 3rd Edition Codex as well.
You should definitely check out this codex. It is fun as a warpfiend on a BBQ.

You forgot to mention that wolfgaurd could infiltrate if attached to a scout squad something they fixed in later editions of white dwarf and chapter approved. Something they kept banging on about
