I got into 40K back in 2nd Edition. When we only ever saw 4 chapters, of which one was the Space Wolves. (on goblin green bases!!)

“An exception to the rule.” This quote nailed it for me. This is why I love the Space Wolves in 30k and 40k they are the exception to just about every rule and I love them dearly for it.

to someone who hasn't been engaged with Warhammer stuff on a large scale since 40K was in its 4th edition, these videos are really interesting because the backstory of the legions before their Primarchs were discovered was not something Games Workshop ever spent much time on back then
It is interesting they decided to make the Space Wolves have this reputation for barbarity in the Horus Heresy, when it was established that in 40k they are one of the more 'humane' legions (all these of course being relative when you are talking about 7 foot killing machines who all have a tendency towards war crimes), while retaining their reputation for ferocity. Is it that they changed their outlook, or did the Imperium change around them?
It's their entire Arc throughout the Heresy

Oh please. If daddy himself told Russ or the space wolves to Raze another planet in 40k, they wouldn’t even question it and jump at the act with gusto. They just learnt not to listen to anyone else that isn’t the Emperor.

The top ten percent since Bjorn have been more humane, the rest of the Legion follows suit.
Honestly I prefer the pre heresy designs of the space wolves they seem more grim and serious compared to 40K where their almost partially a joke faction
While always a bit silly, it feels like the silliness ramped up around the time of 5th edition, and that was when they started to feel like a joke, with them going ham on the wolf theme

Completely agree. I've always thought of them as pitiful, ignorant morons. This whole image of savages has been cultivated for years, but it's ironically accurate. There's not one thing I think is admirable about this shitty legion. I rank them near the bottom of all.

I REALLY do appreciate these lore dumps. I know a lot of Warhammer background, but there is still so many little details that elude me, especially the Horus Heresy. The piles of novels and expensive Forgeworld books make it a bit hard to crack into, but these videos are great. The hype for Horus Heresy 2.0 is so real, and you are really helping to keep it going. At this rate, though, I am going to explode before it all comes out. lol
A great legion, always fun to play in 40k. The subsequent 30k fluff has made them even better. The second most humble legion after the 18th!
The Wolves are the caring and compassionate (relatively) warriors they are today because they know from experience what blindly following orders to kill a civilization or group of people can cause.

The Minotaurs seem to have taken over their job in 40k, the marines that enforce the will of Terra on rogue marines.
As for the wolfy wolf wolves, I always liked the 1d4chan story about Bjorn the Fell Handed waking up and being confused and angry that his legion of space vikings turned into a chapter of wolf furries while he was asleep.
100% - Love them as Viking inspired Space Marines, less as wolfy this, wolfy that. get over it.

Space wolves were my first 40k army, back in 2nd Edition. In 40k they are a bit silly now with their wolf riders and wolf swords and wulfen etc. A bit unfortunate that they are grey in the heresy, since painting plastic miniatures for hours, just to end up having them all grey again isn't all that much fun ;)

I agree, we don't need werewolves and wolf sleighs and wolf ships. Just gimme some marines with war paint of runes and woad on their power armor, I'm good. The heresy Era Wolves feel like they ring truer for 2E, even the armor is more like the right color.

9:10 This is one of those things I always read as Russ placing the culture of Fenris above all else. To the point where I wonder if Russ would argue the Shamans aren't relevant because they don't truly participate in study, their role restricted to keepers of the history of Fenris and the Space Wolves.
I'd love to find out more about the Rangda, as this was one of the few xenos/lore bits I was almost entirely unfamiliar with.
Theyre left incredibly vague but frequently described as the worst thing the Imperium faced during the Great Crusade
I am loving this series, I look forward to every upload! I think I'm most excited to the Iron Hands episode. They aren't all that well explored in 40k and they seem way cooler in 30k (well, everything seems way cooler in 30k)

Space Wolves are my favorite. I made my chapter as a mix of Space Wolves and White Scars together to make the Doom Wolves (LOL IKR, when your young you think it is a cool name...). I liked the concept that an army mixed with those gene seeds would rove around in packs, vrooom vroooom :P
"Space wolves" is no better lo and that's actually a really good idea, two tribal chapters mixed together like mongols n Vikings

The space wolves were my first army back in the mid 90s, I really like their heresy look running a bit closer to the Rogue Trader and early 2E black and white art style, and I feel their modern pack selection is already kind of like the heresy era units (all bolter squad, all melee ground pounder squad, all heavy weapons squads) plus I think they look really great in mk3 or their bespoke asymmetric shoulder armor. I just can't bring myself to do Wolves for 30k, the modern wolves have just really turned me off when they wolfed the wolf shark. Wolf. Wolf wolf wolf.
After reading Prospero burns they became one of my favorite chapters.

Hey Ian, thank you very much for your videos, they are truly a beautiful work of dedication towards the Warhammer lore. I just wanted to mention one thing about High Gothic pronunciation, if you want to pronunce "Principia Bellicosa" using the Latin phonetic on which (I suppose) the whole language is based, the right way of saying it should be "PrinCHIpia (like the word CHampion)". I know High Gothic isn't a real language, but most of its words come straight from a late Latin version, so I can assume the phonetic to be the same.

I think it’s pretty clear High Gothic is supposed to be Latin and Low Gothic is supposed to be English. And yes, you are correct, Principia is the plural of Principium and CI is not pronounced like KI in Latin
Is it said with a “chuh”? I always thought that Latin C is pronounced like English K, ie “Prin-Kip-ee-uh”.
Fex, that Caesar should be pronounced more like Kaiser, which is closer to the original than how English does it despite ironically retaining the original spelling.
@@MasterShake9000 In Italy when we study Latin in school we are taught about Latin phonetic and you'd be surprised to know how much Latin and Italian have in common.
Caesar is supposed to be pronounced with the soft c, .CHesar; at least this is what we have been taught in school since forever in Italy 😁
@@MasterShake9000 as I understand it there's basically two 'real' ways to pronounce Latin: 'classical', or the way the ancient Romans pronounced it (Prin-KIP-Ee-Uh), and 'ecclesiastical', or the way the mediaeval church came to pronounce it, influenced by more-modern Italian vulgate (Prin-CHIP-Ee-Uh). And then there's the modern-colloquial way which takes more of a lead from English and more-closely-related romance languages like French (Prin-SIP-Ee-Uh).
If you ask someone in the modern English-speaking world to read "Caesar" and "Cicero" they'll most likely say "See-ser" and "Sissero", with a soft 's' sound to the 'c's. If you ask someone from Italy or someone who learned 'modern' Latin they'll say "Ches-are" and "Chi-cher-o", with a 'postveolar fricative' as in "cheese". (Complicated only a little by using English phonetic spelling; in Italian the 'Ch' sound is plosive anyway!) If you asked an ancient Roman, or perhaps someone who learned Latin via etymology, they'd have said "Kay-ser" and "Kikero" with a hard 'plosive' pronunciation.
There seems to be a broad trend amongst scientific use of Latin to use the classical pronunciation, I've frequently heard both Newton's, and also Whitehead and Russel's "Principia Mathematica" referred to with a hard plosive 'c' on both instances, but it's by no means universal.
So: yes, from what I understand you're right, but a great many people who think they speak Latin today will disagree with you. ;-) But more to the point, since the High Gothic of the 30/40k setting is quite clearly a reference to/pastiche of the Catholic church's use of Latin - particularly their insistence on delivering mass in Latin rather than local languages right up until (IIRC) the 1960s - it's probably more appropriate to use the ecclesiastical pronunciation of Latinate words (as Giacomo Torlontano above was suggesting) rather than the ancient Roman one in the Warhammer setting. Unless perhaps you're talking about Ultramarines.

People knock the SW for all the wolfy stuff, but the Blood Angels are just as bad. Paraphrasing from Devastation of Baal "Dante rose from his blood bed and put on his blood red robes. Crossing the hall of Blood he sat at his blood red desk and lifted his blood quill. Dipping it into the fresh blood ink he wrote todays Blood orders to be relayed via blood messengers to the Chapter of the blood. Also Blood. Lots of Blood. Blood."
The primarch whose name means "Iron Hands" leads the Iron Hands with his Iron Hands. If it's not a bit cringe, it's not space marines.
That is one of the best things about 40k, and 30k for that matter. Its all a bit silly and over the top. That is part of what makes it fun.

The concept is in fact very good. The Emperor's "guard-dog" or "enforcer": Utterly to a fault loyal to the Emperor's will and imbued with an extra zealotry/single-mindedness.
That fits. The motif perhaps needs correct regulation.
Whereabouts can I find the information on the pre Russ crossed burning swords logo (4:35 in video)
It's never shown in the books, but there's a good chance it's the orange symbol bottom right at 10.02 which is also on the shoulder pad of the pre-Russ MK2 armour used a few times in the video. This is the same symbol used for 'field police' in the old Rogue Trader rulebook. If that's it, it's VERY stylised!

Exactly. They understood the need for limitation. The 15th legion was excessively arrogant just like their Primarch thinking they could master such powers.

In my opinion the trefoil legions represen loyalty: loyalty to the Emperor himself, loyalty to his dream and loyalty to humanity.

Space Wolves were cooler as Viking Marines with a hint of werewolf than the sort of silly wolf marines riding wolves with wolf swords and wolf tail talismans they are nowadays.
That's why they're cooler in the heresy, because they don't ride around on giant wolves or use chariots pulled by them.
Always felt they were a bit of a "teachers pet" legion, getting to be super special and cool above and beyond the others, but then, the Viking/Marine mix aesthetic is really cool and plays up the technobarbarism of the setting in a way you rarely see with any other legion.
the White Scars have a bit of the same technobarbarism aesthetic going on, just with Central Asian instead of Nordic themes
"Teacher's pet" is exactly how their rules feel in a bunch of editions. Space Wolves were like Grey Knights before Grey Knights and got to break certain rules because reasons. My dislike of the SW comes from how much cheese they had access to in older editions. Split fire devastator squads? Get to take power weapons AND special weapons in their tactical squads, on top of getting a sergeant with access to power weapons? Ballistic Skill 4 Leman Russ because fuck you?

I'll never forgive the VI for what they did to Prospero (Of course it's the library of Alexandria all over again). Russ didn't have the excuse of being blinded by fury - barely sane with the butcher's nails in his brain like Angron and his sons. One could argue that they were true to their purpose, but it was the lack of reflection and wanton glee at the thought of slaughter, not to mention their hypocrisy towards psykers that has always soured my opinion of them. They never seemed to aspire to be more than what they were. Even in 40K they field mutants (Wulfen) without shame or censure, content to believe that they're beyond reproach, a breed apart.

In RT days Leman Russ was just some Imperial Army general and the tank was named after him. Lore drift happened later.

I'll be here for every episode, Ian. I always thought the Space Wolves were a bit silly myself. The name seems like something zero thought was put into back in Rogue Trader and the IP has been saddled with it ever since.
That's a fair criticism, but it's also pretty fair to level at the other first founding chapters. It feels to me a little like a "Fighting Hellfish, " it's fine as a nickname for an army unit. it gets pretty bad if it jumps the shark and becomes about literal fish. Or Wolves in this case.
