although i saw Derringer play several times w/Edgar Winter, when we caught the time he opened up for Led Zeppelin in Oakland 1977, Edgar was nowehere to be seen (at their notorious final US gig, when Bonham & gangster John Bindon were arrested for assaulting a crew member who nicked the Led Zep sign from a dreesing room trailer backstage); Page, in the throes of his heroin addiction was ineffectual at best, quite an underwhelming show by Led Zep- and Derringer, playing the slot just before them, BLEW THEM OUT OF THE WATER!!! thumbs up, of course, #954

There was a time, I could do every single move and ball handling skill that Pete did and taught. I had the hair and the baggy socks and put my heart and soul into being the best player, I could be. I've never been one to idolize any particular person, (or person's), but Pete was as kind and generous, on the court and off. I met him at a basketball camp when he was with the Atlanta Hawks and he allowed me to show him what he had taught me. It was a moment as a young teen I will never forget. He said it was like watching himself in a mirror. I quickly reminded him that I was better looking. His laughter at my remark was so genuine and he said, "Now, I know you're me"! A beautiful moment for me, for sure. I was originally, on CZcams, as PistolPete, but I messed up my first account and couldn't remember my passwords or login information and wasn't able to retrieve that account, (bummer), so I was lucky to get the moniker I now have. I can't sign in as PistolPete, but I feel good knowing that they're both mine and no one else can use them. I've seen Rick many many times, and tipped back a few beers with him too. He went to one of my gigs the night after one of his, and stayed for a beer after our first set. We did our Johnny, Edgar, and Rick medley and he liked it. He didn't jam with us though. He gave me advice that I follow to this day. He told me to stop holding my breath during my solos. He's right. When I concentrated on breathing, I discovered that I grind my teeth while I play too. These deprive our muscles of oxygen, and waste energy that causes us to have a rough third set later on in the night. He is one of the coolest down to earth people who are actually famous too. I'm just a nobody, and he's still polite and respectful.

My mother was a concert pianist. She taught me that every instrument the instrument should focus on adding to or complimenting the melody. When you listen to the guitar solos of the true grades you hear the guitar actually sing out! Sadly, so many guitar solos are now about shredding as many notes as possible... which is just sad! Other greats like Richie Blackmore and Brian May really understand how to make a guitar sing... But Rick Derringer was there 1st!

I saw Rick and Edgar perform live at a club called the Fore 'n' Aft North in Brewster, N.Y. in the 70's, and the show was every bit as energetic from beginning to end. They set the place on fire. People were jumping up and down and screaming and yelling throughout the entire show. I got to meet them after the show, and they were so accessible and friendly, laughing and teasing me and joking around the whole time. Edgar was a bit reserved and shy, but Rick really drew him out; he was a fireball, so full of energy that I asked him, "So, do your batteries ever run out?" What a great night that was. Hard to believe it was 43 years ago!!!

Funny story appeared in the local "City Paper" the last year they had it (due to losing their lease on the property). One night, "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" was playing, and there was a guy at the bar playing air guitar to it. Another guy saw it and said, "Who does he think he is, Rick Derringer?" The bartender heard it, walked over and told him, "Buddy, that IS Rick Derringer." Rick and his band played at that final block party.

Thanks so much, Fil. I remember hearing and watching the McCoys when they came through town in the 60s. Rick and his brother were around 16-17 years old. The drummer was so small and young, he had to stand to play the drums because sitting he couldn't reach everything. Also, the first time I heard the magnificent and sorely missed Vox Continental organ. They played Sloopy and Fever and stuff and were just fun, fun as all get out. I am not sure teenagers today know what fun is anymore. Back then, it was much more simple - no phones, no social media, no nothin;. AND it was much more innocent and happier then, Partly, because music was not corporate - today everybody sounds like The Voice or Britain's Got Talent or some other thoroughly obnoxious corporate "talent" show. It was also amazing to see Rick team up with Johnny Winter - what a tour de force!

Incredible player (Still) , singer, and a massively talented producer's ear for what part and instrumentation fits. Got to talk with him at a Q & A and the man has great stories. This Group with Edger Winter was the real deal. I read a book last year that's available on Amazon- "Gallagher, Marriott, Derringer and Trower" by Dan Muise. Is over 20 years old but loaded with anecdotes, and interviews with people (and in 2 cases, the subjects themselves as Rory and Steve are gone). I highly recommend it to my fellow enthusiasts who love music of the era and this channel. Rick's whole story from being a teenaged bubblegum rocker to an accomplished player in White Trash to a go-to NYC Player and Producer in the 70s is worth a read. And those other guys ain't shabby either. The moral of the book is...these guys never made a lot of money but worked their asses off and loved their craft. @@ps7462 me too. That's my favorite version. BTW, the cover for Johnny Winter And was taken by Norman Seef. When we lived in LA, my wife was Norman's account manager and I was an assistant/darkroom technician while going to art school. Norman lived in the Hollywood Hills and when we'd go to his house to deliver prints or paperwork, there's no telling who would be swimming in the pool!

This was a dynamite band. I saw them live in the 1970s several times in Memphis TN, which was one of their favorite towns. The Mid-South coliseum routinely sold out (12,000) for these guys. Interesting side note: Dan Hartman (bass, vocals) may have been the best all-around vocalist of the bunch.

I'm an old bluegrass banjo player and I love these videos! Derringer a hugely underrated guitarist/singer. I recently underwent a throat surgery and have a paralyzed vocal cord, so listening to these tenor harmonies is a bit frustrating (but amazing). People always make fun of the high singing in bluegrass, but it's pervasive throughout all pop music.

We opened for Rick back in 91, in Rhode Island, Our agent told us Rick had blown up his Marshall the night before, and was wondering if anyone played through a Marshall, and if so could he use it for the gig, I had just bought a JCM800 50 watt, and I would be honored to have him use it. We did the gig , Rick was fantastic, and after the gig, we talked and smoked some herbal cigarettes, and asked him all sorts of questions about, the Winter brothers, about what songs he played on for Steely Dan, I asked him if he would sign my amp, and with a sharpie, signed it very nicely Rick Derringer 91”, I still have that amp and the great memories of that gig! Ricks the MAN!

The first concert I ever saw in my life was on my 15th birthday, April 8th 1973...(I was finally allowed to go to concerts) was The Edgar Winter Group at the little Morris County Collage in Roxbury NJ..My friend rolled a hunderd and fifty joints and lit them up and was passing them around and I said Paul, these joints ain't coming back, and he said so what we got 150 of them ..I was so stoned and so young and Frankenstien was all the rage at the time...And Ronnie Montrose just left the group after the last album and Rick was the new guitar player for Edgars new 'Shock Treatment' album...After that show I seen the Derringer Band twice in the mid 70s at The Garden opening for Aerosmith, and then Nugent in 1976,. And I got most of Rick Derringer's records (and cds) for the rest of my life...I've been watcing this performance ever since I first saw it over a decade ago on youtube and I always thought that it IS one of the most Kick Ass performances ever ...I play guitar too, but there's something different about these American guitar players like Rick Derringer, Ted Nugent, Johnny Winter, Ronnie Montrose, Wayne Kramer, Scott Ashton, and Jimi of course, than my favorite British players like Page, Clapton, Beck, Blackmore, Brian and Keith, George and John etc.....Not better or worse...Just different...It's all good...frankm63yroldwhitekid rockfan

I was 15 when I bought the album "All American Boy" because I heard Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo on the radio. I couldn't get over the guitar playing
I suppose it was like people later hearing Eddie Van Halen.
The LP is in my wardrobe with the rest of my collection. I'm now 63.
Very under rated by public but when you see the albums and songs he plays guitar on most people in the english speaking world would have heard him play!
