Rick is on fire here, knocking it out of the park. Ringo got it right with the whole idea of the All Starr Band. Ringo doesn't need to prove anything to anybody; all he needs to do is call up some legendary rock and roll friends, hit the road, and play a bunch of songs that everyone knows and loves and can sing along to. I went to one of the shows, and it was great fun, with three generations of fans in the audience. Peace and love!

I remember meeting Rick back in NYC around 1985 at a guitar show and he wasn't in good shape. Also saw him play at a little bar in Greenwood Lake late 80's and there was no one there and he was uh under the weather I think. I thought and think he was an amazing guitarist who was on his way to checking out early and then somehow he pulled himself together, got sober, found God and here he is. Amazing person. He lived it and survived and he is still alive and well.

There were thousands of Derringer-wanna-be's out there; and, thank the Rock Gods for that. What other profession saw millions and millions of wide-eyed and hopeful young people looking for that hidden talent they all truly believed they had somewhere in their musical grey matter? No one rushed out the door to be a house painter or attorney. The 50's, 60's and 70's, saw a volcanic eruption of musical styles and burgeoning genres never before seen in world history. And we teens lapped it all up. The rock 'pyramid' was being built at light speed and the great talents were discovered. But, for every great band, 100,000 garage bands went the way side, as did mine. Nonetheless, those bands have, arguably, the greatest memories of all. At least they had a chance to try. And, that was half the fun. Bragging rights.

Rick Derringer was also a very accomplished Session Guitarist and played with so many Musical Acts.
In their prime in the 1970's -KISS brought in Rick, when Ace couldn't seem to play a solo they needed correctly. Maybe he was too wacked out on drugs or booze.
So, after hours of Ace messing up - KISS brought Rick in, and he nailed the solo in one take. He was there less than 30 minutes.

I knew a guy back in the mid-1970s who seemed to pop up everywhere back in those days. He seemed to me to be totally committed to being in show biz, even if it killed him, LOL. He was the bass player in an Art-Rock band called Gentle Art and in that capacity I'd often see him when our band was paying support to his band. He got a bit of a break when he became the night time announcer on Brisbane's 4BK radio station, from 8:00pm to midnight, Monday through Thursday nights. His show was called "The Fat Music Show", in which he played album tracks from all branches of the Rock music family tree. For example, one night he played only music from Prog Rock masters, Yes. What a night that was for me, being a massive Yes fan! Wishbone Ash used to also get a run often. I had well over 300 albums, and fully half of them came from my hearing tracks from them played by Rick on his radio program. It was there that I first heard Tobacco Road, from the Roadworx album by Edgar Winter. You better believe I wasted no time at all heading for the import record store in the city to buy it!
I'd been a fan of Johnny Winter since the late 60s, when I first heard Johnny Winter And . . Live, at high school. We were always doing things to raise money for worthy charities, including running a kind of high school lunchtime radio station in which we brought our LPs and 45s to school and played tracks from them by request, which cost 10c per play, proceeds going to the charity we supported. Every little bit helped, I suppose.
