In this video, I custom build a robust power bank for my camping trips and outings. very handy to charge my phone, GoPro batteries, or to power a light or accessories.
during the filming of this video and the jump cut editing, you may or may not have heard or seen the fuses used.
for the USB socket, a 5 amp maxi blade fuse and holder was used, and for the 12v accessory socket, a 7.5 amp maxi blade fuse was used
For this long video feature I show my steps of building this one off power bank from a polypropylene ammo box that I purchased along with all the necessary component parts needed as I enjoy the creative aspect over factory made units that are not that service friendly.
All the parts used in this build are listed below

Fantastic thanks for sharing your video.
Good evening, and many thanks for watching my video, Geoffrey
Very tidy, and I love all that green!
Many thanks for watching my video and the lovely comment. You can never have too much green or camo
Fantastic video AW. I love how simple and clean it looks. I will be making one of these sometime this week. Liked and Subscribed
Many thanks for your kinds words and support 🙏 Austin
thanks, great video.. liked & subbed. Lincolnshire UK
Appreciate your kind words and support 🙏
I would put the to longer one's on the other end so I could get to my positive plug easier.
great idea, I am thinking about building one of these, would this build accommodate a larger battery? if it could what battery would you recommend? I need it for charging camera battery/phone/vape etc
Good evening. This enclosure/ make of ammunition box will only house the 12v 12aH battery. If will, however, power all of your devices over a weekend. The standard british army steel ammunition box would take a bigger battery but it's heavy and prone to rust. Austin
Totally new to all this 🙁
Thanks for another great video. Do you think it's ok to use a lifepo4 battery?
Many thanks. Yes, providing you are able to maintain and charge the battery. I don't see an issue. Do they need to vent at all or are they sealed
Hi AW, awesome video. Can I ask what the purpose is for the aviation plug? Is it to charge the battery? I noticed that in the description listed you had a direct charger from a 12v supply to the battery terminals, however not a power supply to the aviation plug. Thankyou!
No need to reply, I looked through the comments and found the answer!
How do you connect the fuses please
Great video

Have you fished for carp with a fly rod? That is some awesome fun!
I did try it many years ago and snapped my friends best rod when trying to land one
Going to build this , is there a list of components I will need please 29:07
Hi, what kind of cable do you use for charging thw battery? Thank you
I use what was issued within my charger and cut of the crocodile clips and soldered on my 2 pin plug. Just a a reference use what you'd find in the cable on your TV or kettle. 0.75mm or 2 core speaker wire
Just watched this video and I’m really interested in building my own , have you got a list of the components to purchase , I have a battery ready to use
Read the description, please. It's all there
Where exactly do I wire the fuses between which components? Subscribed many thanks
The power bank shouldn't really be used to power high current items, and it's perfectly for phones, cameras, Gopros, drones, camping lighting, or two-way radios, so I've just used a 5 amp maxi blade fuse between the positive from the battery to the panel switch. Or you could fuse differently to suit your needs or planned usage by fusing between the switch to the USB socket at 5 amps and a separate fuse, say 10 amp from the switch to the 12v accessory socket

@@AW-Servicesthanks mate appreciate the help
Hi like your power bank I am going to build one. Where did you get your charger plug from and charger thanks
It's listed in the description Scot. It was a bulk pack of 16mm 2 pin aviation style plugs and bulkhead sockets with dust moisture cover
@@AW-Services thanks sorry didn’t see that. Did you just cut the crocodile clip off the charger
Yes, on the charger I listed which is the same style I just cut the crocodile clips off and neatly soldered the charger fly lead into the plug for a robust yet professional finish. I do apologise, i didn't actually feature that in the video.
Need anymore help don't hesitate to leave a comment. Austin
Hi regards to the aviation two pin plug, how do I wire up the plug end to the female connecter
Remove the small inserted Phillips screw which secures the outer metal body. Hold the black protruding female piece and half quarter turn to separate the two pieces. Ensure you place the outer metal cover over your cable first and undo the two screws on the cable clamp and continue to solder your two wires onto the two tabs
I’ve done the same one but my usb and voltage stay on before I’ve turned the switch on. What have I done wrong?
You haven't got your positive supply to the to load pole of the switch. View my wiring diagram/guide

what type of battery do you use or recommend? is it AGM, UPS?
All the information is listed in the description
Subscribed, thanks. I'm building a larger version of this with a 110aH leisure battery. I don't suppose you know what size fuse I would need for that would you? TIA
First and foremost many thanks for your support and for viewing my video. Fuse ratings determine your output load and taking into consideration your battery capacity do you want to use a large surge load like a boat trolling motor or just as a camping, off-grid style Power Bank ? The internal wiring gauge and fuse must reflect your usage. If your battery bank is for charging electronics, running lighting etc I'd recommend a maximum fuse rating of 10 amps. If you require any further help please don't hesitate to leave as many comments as you wish. Kind regards Austin
@@AW-Services Austin, thanks for the reply mate. I am getting into Astrophotography so I want to use it for powering my mount / cameras etc. All 12v stuff. The battery is much bigger than what I actually need, but I got a good deal on the battery and components so making do. I'm also wiring in a 500Va Inverter onto the battery so I can use it for things like camping etc. I'm assuming that's seperate so wont effect what I need to wire up this amazon USB / cigarette lighter sockets. I'm using 14AWG 2.5mm2 wiring if that helps.
You won't have any issues there. Just ensure you have all your battery connections and connectors tight and well crimped. Are you using a standard battery box with the house style roof lid with flat surfaces for switches, display and connections etc similar to a bison trolling motor battery box
@@AW-Services Thanks mate, so will a 10A fuse be OK? I'm using the Erbauer Connecx Tool storage box. Quite big, but the battery is big and heavy so needed something sturdy that I can pull around on wheels.
Great choice of box especially having the capability to move it with the oem trolley.
What I would suggest is having a 4 way maxi blade fuse holder mounted inside the box, for a 12v accessory socket use a 10 amp fuse then you'll have enough current use for anything from a 12v lamp to car tyre inflator for example. Then you could have USB sockets on a 5 amp fuse and have empty spare fuse positions if you ever wanted to add lights into the box or a 12v Anderson powerpole connector for larger accessory uses
Hi mate, planning on making my own, is there any way I can send you a diagram to show you the way I’m going to wire it just to make sure it’ll work. I think I’m starting to understand this stuff but would be appreciate if you double checked 👍🏻
Good evening and many thanks for watching my video.

@@AW-Servicessent a message over. Appreciate it thanks 👍🏻
Hi i want to build one ive got 2 12v 7hp battery how will i go about wire it up please for 12v.?
Hello, if you wish to use 2x 12v batteries you'll need to connect both batteries in parallel. That's positive to positive and negative to negative. So for example you have 2x 12v batteries each at 8amps and when you connect them you have the same 12v supply but increased capacity at 16 amps. Thanks for subscribing. Austin
@AW Services thanks for your help last question what are you using to charge the batterys please?
I'm using an affordable small charger suited to lead acid battery charging. If you read the through the video description you'll see I've listed all the components used in this build
What’s the watt of this power bank? How do you work it out?
For a 12v 12Ah battery such as my brand new Yuasa np12-12, it's approximately 144w and can provide depending on age, wear, and capacity around 18 Watts an hour for 7+hours
What's the lug crimper tou are using?
Mine is a multiple use crimping tool that has a set of 25 different jaw pieces for many types of low voltage connectors.
Hi, awesome video! what gauge cable are you using?
1mm2 pure copper, rated 16.5 amps. Outside diameter
@@AW-Services thank you buddy
My best tip is to stay away from Amazon ebay wire and I'd recommend halfords. I purchase all my wiring from vehicle wiring products which can be found on Google. If you are not bothered by cable colour harmonisation you can also use 1.5mm mains cable found in extension leads. Or 0.75mm found in toaster and kettle leads sold at B&Q brown is positive blue is negative - Live & neutral (common)
@AW Services just the video I needed. I've just put one of these together tonight and want to change the charger already a I have to unplug amd plug things in. I've already ordered the one you use and i thankyou for that.
I was given a ton of 2.5mm cable for free for this project so I used that. You think that will be OK?
Yes the inner conductors of 2.5mm flex which is heavy duty extension lead is absolutely perfect providing you stick to the colours brown for live = positive and blue for neutral = negative
Hi i want to build one of these but i only want to use it for charging my phone what panel would you suggest i have subscribed subscribed
Good afternoon, Rob. First & and foremost, I really do appreciate your support, and I'm glad you found my video.
I would strongly recommend this less complex option of twin outlet USB power switch and 12v accessory socket (see link below)
Having the 12v accessory socket is a backup in case the USB outlets fail, or you could use it to power a car type of USB or other low current 12v camping lights or vehicle related accessories.
Thlevel Dual USB Car Charger Socket Panel with 12V Cigarette Lighter Socket Splitter, LED Voltmeter and Independent Switch for 12V 24V Vehicles Car Boat Truck Caravan (Type B) amzn.eu/d/3FT3u7H
Kind regards Austin
@AW-Services thanks for that will I still use the same charging port
Feel free to ask for help if you need it. Have a great weekend
What type of battery did you use ?
It's all in the video description
Hi good video where can I get some decent wire and connectors please thanks
Halfords for connectors and wire just use 2.5mm 3 core flex and remove the inner wire. Affordable and perfect conductor thickness. B&Q homebase or wickes
Thanks
@stuartcross749 your welcome
What wire size did you use
Halfords 8 amp copper stand www.halfords.com/motoring/tools/fuses-electricals-and-fixings/electricals/halfords-8-amp-cable-red-elec150-726086.html?stockInventory=undefined
Hi AW, do you or would you build one of these to sell? Would love to purchase one.
Thanks in advance
No, sorry
I think this guy has partied in a warehouse...lol
If you are referring to the short intro track, I made it in my studio, and yes, I partied in the 90s when Dutch gabber and uk breakbeat was massive
How much did it cost to make
I haven't done a price breakdown as I had purchased many of the items in bulk or already had them in stock.
I have listed the parts within the description, which should help with costings
How do you charge it sir?
With the listed charger within the description
Hi sorry to bother you again could I use these connectors with this charger
6-Amp Car Battery Charger, 12V Automatic Smart Charger Monitor Battery with Temperature Compensation, Intelligent Charges, Repairs, Maintains Car Motorcycle Boat Mower Battery, Green
23
Thanks again
Yes if using the same battery as myself as they are indeed male spade connectors
Just ensure you mark one of your charger wires with red insulation tape to denote positive
lol...pure chinesium...sad but true.
Going to build this , is there a list of components I will need please 29:07
Read the description it's all there
