- This video shows how to build an faraday cage using an old military ammo can. This build is using a 30mm ammo can and it will hold a ton of small handheld electronics and keep them safe from an Electromagnetic Pulse or EMP. Here are links to the products i used in this build:
1/4" Faraday foam and tape: amzn.to/3UaQwoq
3M SUper 77 Spray Adhesive: amzn.to/3vQbn6d
Black Foam Sheet (Not exactly what i used but close): amzn.to/3SgwGph

I made one for my stepdaughter. She keeps her "toys" in it. Sure glad she's planning to get through a grid-down future.
Yeah I keep my vibrators in one of these too. Can’t go through the apocalypse without one.
I like the idea of using foam, when I made mine I just used cardboard, it works but the foam looks better and will probably hold better too
Good build demo. I think if an EMP event happens that wipes the national grid the number of problems we will face is more than we can truly imagine. While people think they have many bases covered in their preps the one thing they cannot prepare themselves for is the mental toll such an event and aftermath would take on people. The challenges and horrors of a new reality would be overwhelming beyond our wildest expectations. I'm a long time subscriber of this channel and many of the videos are great for improving everyday life. Keep up the great content.
TY JJ
Looks pretty good.
Best option?
Sandblast the whole can and have it tin plated.
THEN apply your gasket material and follow up with some EMI tape on the exterior for long term storage.
Be my guest! I don’t have time for that and sandblasting is an awful mess unless you have a big cabinet. I made the mistake of trying to sandblast a truck frame once. NEVER AGAIN. 😂
I have 2 big pouches lined with foil in the gun safe in my basement. I put my cell phone in it one day and had my wife try to call it. The call didn't go through. I'm more afraid of cyber attacks on our power grid these days than EMP. I realize a solar flare could cause trouble. But a major solar storm hasn't happened since 1859.
Cyber attacks are also a very real concern for sure.
J J, I was starting to think you had bunkered up.
lol. Nah. Just taking a break. ;)
You could also seal the can by placing sheets of aluminum foil over the entrance like 5 sheets then closing the lid onto.the aluminum foil, make sure all sides of can have aluminum foil over hanging it. Then Use Metal duct tape around where the lid meets the can and also seal the can. It's a little easier but if you open and close the can a lot, it can be a pain in the butt. So if you will need steady access to the can the Dremel and way showed makes more sense. Just giving options.
DON'T FORGET TO LINE THE ENTIRE INSIDE OF THE CAN WITH FOAM, CARDBOARD or OTHER INSULATION TO PREVENT Contact WITH METAL CAN INSIDE.
Just my 2 cent
Good luck
You didn’t see the whole explanation on the lining? Lol that was like the first two mins of the vid.
@@RealitySurvival I did watch the entire Vid, all I was reminding people that besides Foam you can also use other material and to make sure that they did it. I have made 3 faraday cages, 2 from trash cans 1 from ammo can ...
I've used foil for seals as well & it worked. But ... 3 m makes a conductive gaskets u can buy on Amazon. Note though... MUST HAVE CONDUCTIVE ADHESIVE. As I sd... It's on Amazon & any alternative to faraday or other SHTF products usually cheaper.
A drone, radios, phones, red dots, etc...Good things.
I broke my little drone recently. Replaced the arm that broke but then I couldn’t ever get the gimble to recalibrate. Prolly gonna have to get a new one. But at least now I will have a ton of extra batteries.
@@RealitySurvival dang, that sucks.
RED DOTS? I just came across your channel and watched a video in which you had the founder of EMP Shield on, 4 years ago. In the video a ? was asked about red dots on rifles, and it was said by your guest that it does not have a "Micro Processor, nor any Silicon something or other" and therefore does not need to be protected.
So I am wondering if my Crimson Trace Laser and Veridian Laser will be safe if left on the guns.
I am going to call Veridian to hear what they say, and maybe you can give your former guest a call to hear what he thinks.
Thanks, Donny.......a new subscriber!
I am thinking "No".
Red Dots are LEDs which are "Silicon something or other"
NICE
How can you keep it from rusting?
I think some dielectric grease should work fine.
3-6 months in a secure area and we all know that it would take a very long time, if ever, the government could secure any significant region of the country in a time like that.
That only if we get lucky and have to deal with only one detonation. If there are multiple the timeline shoots out much further.
I didnt see this video on your substack so ill ask here. Ive thought about making one of these. But also what are your thoughts on using dehydrated mylar food bags doubled up with a layer of anothe plastic bag in between? Ie. Radio in mylar bag, then in plastic bag, then in another mylar bag. The mylar bags are sealed with the impulse sealer for the food dehydrator. Thoughts?
Also, its then in my safe, which i know is not a tried and true emp protection, but might offer a tad bit more.
Yeah that might work. I’d try placing a cell phone inside of one of the Mylar bags and see if it bocks the signal. If it does you know you are at least getting some attenuation.
Faraday recommends a app on your phone to use. Checks different kinds of signals.
so if you build one like this correct and lets say you bury it would it be a double down to make sure its really protected?
Burying it will provide some level of protection but it has to be 6-8 feet deep to significantly reduce the exposure to EMP waves. I would also not that the closure on the can with this type of foam is likely not waterproof. So you may want to wrap it in some type of plastic if your choose to do that. I think just keeping it in your basement or in a closet would be totally fine.
I am wondering, what type of coating could be put on the bare metal that will still make the connection and stop rust from starting? Do you have any ideas there? I am wondering if bare etch liquid wipe as it does not provide a primed surface just seals from moisture(not sure just brain storming and hoping someone here may know the electrical part of the chemical)?
Perhaps dialectical grease.
@@RealitySurvival that is a good idea, and i have some and can test to be sure power will go threw it! I will test withing next day or 2 and will get back with you
Cosmoline makes a super thick wax that is not thinned for their undercoating. This wax works very well on hard use tools. Melt it and wipe the closed surfaces.
You could ultimately just spray the entire outside with petroleum based under coatings.
@TheTyrial86 I’m not sure that you would want the exterior surface covered with anything that is insulative. You want the can to produce the “skin effect” from the induced voltage. I’m not saying you are necessarily wrong. I’m just not sure it would help the cage perform as needed. Does that make sense?
What about adding tin foil as a layer to the foam.
Really not necessary. But can’t hurt. You would just need to then add another nonconductive layer as well.
@@RealitySurvival okay cheers. There's so many different videos on here with different tips. Even a few that say they must be grounded too.
@mojobartle817 if they are under 36x36 inches they don’t need to be grounded. But any larger and they do.
@@RealitySurvival cheers thanks for the feed back. I'll be measuring my amo classes when they arrive.
HOW MUCH 30 MM CANS I'M IN CANADA A HAVE NOT SEEN ANY HERE
I paid $45 in a local gun store. I’m sure you can find them cheaper though.
Walmart has aprox 6 gal garbage cans for I think 20-25$. Lock top. Works great. Line it w cardboard or whatever non conductive material & use a gasket along top that has conductive adhesive. Works & cheaper.
@MV-go6bc I have a video showing how to use those as well. :)
Are you gonna talk about the houthis?
We will prolly talk about that in the live stream tonight at 7 pm eastern.
If you don’t have foam you can use cardboard.
Yep for sure! Any non conductive material is fine.
I think some youtuber proved you dont need to do all that grinding. I just rap my electronics in Faraday fabric place it inside and im done with it.
Well if you are wrapping the items in faraday fabric you don’t need the ammo can at all.
@@RealitySurvival The Fabric by itself wont give you enough of protection.
@mannyfragoza9652 sure it will as long as it is sewn up right.
@@RealitySurvival I bought 8 pieces of Faraday Clothe from amazon and not one by itself was enough, just my experience
For some items like communications I also put those in faraday bag in my faraday cage. Just to be extra careful. Note a single faraday bag didn't block signals for me so u should nest (smaller bag in bigger bag) if just using bags for protection. Also take attenea off device when stored.
Did the phone and radio work before the modifications?
Yep
