  • How does Narcan (naloxone) Work? Pharmacology for Nurses
    Narcan (naloxone) is an opioid antagonist which means it will move any opioids currently sitting in a receptor site - out, and Narcan will take its place to prevent opioids from binding. The opioid that was originally sitting in the receptor site functioned to change the cell activity. Opioid receptor sites can be found in the brain, nervous system, and intestines. The ones we are concerned with here are the ones in the brainstem as when opioids connect to those receptor sites, the drive to breathe decreases.
    You may come upon a patient who is breathing very slow or not breathing at all. If Narcan is available, you can administer it. It will not harm someone who has never taken Narcan and it may potentially save a life.
    Narcan is given every 2 to 3 minutes if there is no response and in your kit, there will be three doses. If the patient does respond to the first dose, they may wake up agitated because all their pain is back. They should stay awake for 2o to 60 minutes before the Narcan is depleted, leaving the opioid receptor sites free for the opioids that are still circulating to bind. As opioids have a longer half-life, many doses of Narcan are usually required.
    As opioids have a longer half-life, we often need to use Narcan more than one time on the same patient.

    When you mention that all of the pain a patient previously had will come back immediately, you should also remind that the patient will be in full-blown opiate withdrawal which is most likely the reason for hostility

    When I was in grade 10-12 there was an opioid pandemic. I graduated in 1999, I'm 40 now. And thankfully it never happened to me but it is still happening. I recently picked up a kit from the pharmacy. I hope I never have to use it. Thank you for the video!!

    I overdosed on heroin one time and they put Narcan up my nose. I swear to God when I woke up it was like I had so much energy. I didn’t know why everyone was around me staring at me. It was so crazy, I want to know why Narcan put me into rapid withdrawal. My skin started crawling, I was sweating, it was hell. So I want to know what’s in Narcan that makes someone that overdose is going to withdraw

    • @NurseMinder
      @NurseMinder  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks for sharing your experience. When Narcan is used, it will look for any narcotic and remove the narcotic from a receptor site. And then Narcan will block that site so the medication cannot find. It is as if you have not taken any medication once Narcan is on board. Problem is Narcan only last for a short time, and then as it dissolves the medication will again connect into the receptor. So it can be a up-and-down ride

    Hi Mrs Tammy, I enjoyed watching you explaining Narcan also known as Nalcoxone and how they can be a pain reliever for Opioid.
    I found this topic interesting because I am a Human Services major at college and have taken some courses which explains addiction, pain relief, aging, substance abuse and so on.
    Can Narcan make a person addicted just as if it was a prescription or another drug.
    Also, I checked out your mask fog prevention video an hour ago and found it helpful to learn about how to reduce foggy glasses.
    I left behind a link to a product that may help because I purchase mine's last Monday and it has made a difference in wearing a mask to where I can breathe better and less suffocation.
    I also have some other tips on how to reduce foggy glasses.
    1 Use good anti-fog product.
    2 Place glasses on top of the mask.
    3 Fit mask to your face.
    4 Use medical tape to create a seal.
    5 Absorb the moisture by inserting tissue inside the mask.

    • @NurseMinder
      @NurseMinder  Před 3 lety

      Thanks Malik. Narcan does not create an addiction. Narcan has no effect on someone who has no opioids on board.
