In Brooklyn, in the early 1970s, I used to live across the street from the real life bamboo lounge (not the fake movie location) years before henry hill turned government witness.
The parts of Goodfellas that really reaches out and amazes me are the clothes, the hairstyles, the interior decorations and furnishings of the homes of the gangsters and their families in the 1970s (yes, I know Goodfellas also takes place in the 1950s and 60s, but i wasnt around in those years). To my eyes and memories, it's very much 100% accurate.
I personally recall a countless number of Brooklyn residents who indeed dressed and styled themselves like you see in the movie. And i recall the insides of their homes furnished and decorated EXACTLY as one sees in the movie. That indeed was the style back then. The set designers, the costume designers, the hairdressers, and the make up artists of Goodfellas really did an excellent, and most accurate job. It brings me back to Brooklyn during the 1970s.

The guy that Joe Pesci in real life was a monster of a man. His real name was Tommy "Two Gun" DeSimone, stood about 6'4"+/-, and the attitude of a rottweiler on cocaine. He definitely had some twisted wires up in his attic. One time he shot a random guy on the street just to test out a gun he recently got. Killed him atone dead, and kept on walking without missing a beat.
As for Billy Bats, Tommy didn't like him to begin with because after getting out he was bitching about his rackets were gone and wanted them back. Tommy had a stake in some of those rackets, too, but more than likely would have given them up rather than risk a war. The "shine box" insult just sealed Bats fate.

As I understand it, it wasnt Tommy who had a stake in Batts' rackets. It was Jimmy. Jimmy controlled Batts' loansharking operation while Batts was in prison. But now that Batts was set free from prison, Jimmy would have to give back the loanshark operation to Batts. Mob street rules, especially since Batts was a made guy and Jimmy wasn't.
Losing the loansharking operation, Jimmy was looking at a 500 thousand dollar a year loss in income. Rather than give that up, Jimmy had Batts killed, with Tommy's help.
The impression I get about Tommy was that he wasn't a good earner. He wasn't an earner at all. He never initiated his own profitable crimes and scams. Instead, he was always tagging along onto other guys scams which entitled him to a share of the profits.

Since it is about the Mafia there will be a lot of common things between "Goodfellas" and "The Godfather" one major difference as explained in the movie was that they weren't actual members of the Mafia. They were "Associates". They did work for the Mafia but weren't actually in the Mafia. With "The Godfather" those were actual members of the Mafia.
Another good Mafia movie to see is "A Bronx Tale". It has DeNiro in it too, but DeNiro is a good guy a honest man in that one. I highly recommend it!

As far as gangster films go Goodfellas will always get high billing. Simply because it's based on a real story. With some names and aspects changed. These types of film always brings a lot of fascination with the criminal life. Another film I would suggest from this type of genre- On The Waterfront-1954. A film that is essential to any film review channel.

didn't mean facts, simply the structure of the movie from the beats it took. up in in the beginning down at the end. the movie had Pauly (Goodfellas) and the Don (Godfather). they both had people that was under them. with a fast paste third act to an abrupt ending. not about the facts. the director Matin Scorsese direction in both movies were not much different with trust being second guess in both movies. not if the movies were telling the truth. I was bringing up that the movies had similarity's noting more, no need to debate, my job is to point out the differences to my community nothing more! just my opinion for me and my community not anyone else. if you're not in my community you won't know this, I don't ask anyone that's not invited to click on my videos. I'm just for my community no one else. I don't want to debate I just want to have fun with my guys. besides I wasn't there I don't what true or not, this country is known to stretch the truth, my guys know this all ready and it's no need to explain about fiction or non-fiction movie.
