    Aside from a few small changes to some of their names and events, this is an extremely accurate depiction of real life mob life, and Tommy was even crazier than in the movie lol

    This actually did involve the Five Families: Henry, Jimmy and Tommy were all associates (or “connected guys”) of the Lucchese Family, in with Paulie Vario’s crew.
    Tommy was killed IRL specifically by John Gotti’s Gambino crew for killing two made guys who worked with Gotti (Billy Batts and another guy named Foxy). They got Paulie’s permission first.

    • @dudermcdudeface3674
      @dudermcdudeface3674 Před rokem +4

      It was Paulie who told Gotti about what Tommy did. Tommy had done something really bad (even by his standards) that pissed Paulie off, but he couldn't act directly against him without alienating Jimmy.

    Love the way you guys noticed the camera work and the sound design and the film-making elements. I'd say half the reactors who do this movie notice some of that stuff, and the other half are so caught up in the story and the speed of it all that it just goes past them on a first viewing. (understandably so!) I also like how you included little things in your edit that some reactors skip: all the Peteys and Pauls at the wedding; the wives gossiping. Id love to see you do some other great De Niro/Scorsese collaborations (one of the most famous actor-director relationships ever). They followed this movie up the next year with a CRAZY thriller: "Cape Fear". Great movie, their biggest hit....and yet only ONE reaction for it so far. So I definitely recommend doing that one. Also the movie they did before "Goodfellas": "The King Of Comedy"! You've NEVER seen De Niro like that. If you've ever seen "Joker", it's basically a combination of "The King Of Comedy" and another De Niro/Scorsese collab "Taxi Driver". "The King Of Comedy" and "Cape Fear" need WAY more reactions in relation to their place in film history and specifically De Niro and Scorsese. So I hope you guys do them! Guaranteed you'll have something to say about them, guaranteed you'll get views.

    Paulie was a “Captain” in the Luchesse crime family
    Tommy was a soldier
    Jimmy and Henry were “associates”
    The Luchesse crime family was later absorbed by the Gambino Family, making Paulies “Boss” none other than John Gotti. Whose friendship is the reason Tommy, Jimmy, and Henry were able to do whatever they wanted.

    What they don't mention is that that bar Henry owns where they run into Batts, he bought it as an attempt to get away from the mob life and didn't tell them about it, but they just started showing up and he couldn't tell them to go away. And then Tommy and Jimmy do that to Batts in his place. They're so deranged and inconsiderate, they just involve him without even asking. The movie doesn't put too fine a point on it, but Henry was terrified of his "friends" from very early on.

      Another thing worth mentioning is that when Batts gets whacked, people think that was brought on because of the comments he made about Tommy shining shoes. However, when Batts was in prison, Jimmy took over his businesses. Therefore, when Batts got out of prison, he wanted his enterprises back and Jimmy was NOT about to let him do that. In fact, just before Batts gets whacked, he says to Jimmy "I did my time. I got mouths to feed."

    The holy trinity of Mafia on screen is Godfather, Goodfellas, and The Sopranos (TV show). You're right that the godfather was kind of a mythical ideolized version of the Mafia and this movie was a more realistic version of how it actually was. The Sopranos was even more real (but necessarily more violent). Anyway good reaction keep up the good work.

    Like a few other Scorsese films, I didn't know quite what to think of this movie the first time I saw it - which was opening weekend. I mean, here is this title "Goodfellas" - and there was not one good person in this entire movie. But after contemplating it a few months it dawned on me - that was the POINT of the movie. Martin Scorsese made clear that there is nothing honorable about these people - they were lowlifes. So when I watched the movie the second time, I couldn't believe how funny I found a lot of the movie. And the biggest laugh? The idea that Tommy was so crazy even the mafia had to whack him. Now 33 years after the movie's release, this is probably easily in my top 20 movies of all time. I love this film.

      @@TTM9691 Exactly this. I think this is why films like this get sometimes get criticized for glamorizing gangsters. Not the film themselves, but how some simpler folk take them. The idea of not breaking confidences maybe a theoretical virtue. But as a life lesson, at least for respectable people, covering up criminality, particularly at this level, is far outweighed by the virtue of truth-telling or whistleblowing for the benefit of the common good.

    • @TTM9691

      @@Hexon66 Well, people have been babbling about movies glamorizing bad behavior since the movies started, and specifically gangster movies since the days of James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson and Paul Muni. Personally, I couldn't give a flying f**k about people's caterwauling about movies, especially when those same people are usually couch potatoes with three-digit cable bills. People who watch TV all the time and then complain about "the media" or people who watch movies their whole lives and then complain about "Hollywood" are the most tedious slugs on planet Earth, plain and simple. Just way way to much talking n not near enough of the main scene n what main scenes there are they show the middle blow up part of the scene and none of the buildup to it.... its all backwards in how a good reaction should be done. But any of the five families could hijack out of JFK any of the airports. It was open. Oh and they're going to show you Michael franzese who was a captain in the Colombo family is not friendly or close to Henry Hill Jared Michael franzese was making like I think two or four million dollars a month just on his gas scam he's not going to mess with a low-level dude who is just an associate of the lucchesi's. In the hierarchy of the world of that world Michael franzese wouldn't even have a conversation with Henry they might say hello to each other and that's about it they wouldn't be talking any kind of business. Because that would be punching way above Henry's weight class. The only reason why Henry can even talk to Paulie like he does is because he's known poly since he was a small child. Otherwise you wouldn't even be able to have a conversation with Paul either. Unless he's on record as Paulie's associate. The History Channel not put two weeks ago first time aired the special on Lufthansa Heist with one of the last living Heist members and one of my favorite podcasters CZcamsrs John ponisi who was an actual member of the Lucchese family. Former member of Lucchese family super super smart guy. And a strong advocate for doing the right thing staying out of trouble. The only one I know of in this is recorded in history that this has ever happened for at the Copacabana is Michael franzese his father Sonny franzese the former underboss of the Colombo's he they brought a table out onto the stage whenever he wanted to go to the Copa so while you were watching from down below if Henny Youngman was up onstage Michael franzese and whoever you was with which rate up on stage next to Henny Youngman Frank Sinatra whoever it was. But definitely not a hang around. But yeah check it out it was actually Sunny friends scenes that had tables brought up
