I have to thank Joe and Critical Role for bringing the cool back to D&D. I now DM for my son's friends who have fallen in love with the game the same way I did at 10 years old. Amazing that Joe has all this 3D modeling going on, on the table, where players can actually see where they're at, see the things they're fighting, versus just having to imagine it all from the DM's narration. Gives me a kind of warhammer feel, but it feels right, like D&D should just be done that way all the time.
Now, imagine the room is dark as the players enter the game room, except for a small reading light at each seat, with just enough light so they can see their character, dice, and flagon of ale, but the dungeon in the center of the table is dark and unknown. As they progress, small, dim LEDs light up sections of the table showing where they are in the environment, but not what lurks beyond. And maybe a sound effects sampler behind the DM's shield, with speakers under the table, to let players hear the environment.

I have been gaming since 1978. Met some of the biggest names in gaming over the years. Went to some of the largest cons and played in so many RPGA tournaments. It does my heart good to know as my game time winds down that the game will still go on with the same enthusiasm all of us old timers had from the start.
