Stephen is even more OG than Joe, that's all the way back to 1st Edition. Love these two.
I mean Paladins were hard-locked LG until 3.5e. Shifting alignments would break the Paladin Oath as Joe did, but until you regained your god's favor or jumped into an anti-paladin Prestige Class you were basically classless.
They flirted with some others (not just evils, some for neutrals too though they were in Dragon if I recall).
@@ghandimauler they did, all 8 alignments got a paladin class in first ed, but the rules were extremely hard to track down. The Lawful evil one was an assasin iirc called an arikian (spelling is probably wrong). I had a photocopy of the rules a very long time ago, but I cannot recall where or how I got them

@@Jackaroo. Colbert literally says it the moment it happens and the audience still doesn't even react straightaway to him saying "Twenty...damn!". So even after they did know, they still took their time to react.

The even better part is that as of now, Matt Mercer has DM'd for Stephen, Joe and Vin Diesel, and all three games are recorded on CZcams for posterity.
To be fair to Vin, outside of that one shot he did with CritRole to promote his shitty fantasy movie, I think he hasn't really played since he was a kid. In fact I'm surprised he managed to get in touch with Matt Mercer and company to do that one-shot, since Vin seems more like the type to hang out with Tyrese than he is to hang out with Big Show or Taran Killam, let alone a bunch of nerdy voice actors who stream themselves playing Dungeons and Dragons.

I think Mercer refers to himself as a Dungeon Master (DM) instead of Game Master but yeah.
That was magic when him and Stephen solo... you can just see the amazement and joy in Stephen's eyes the entire time. I really hope they can bring him back for more one shots or as a guest on Critical Role.
I had heard of, but never seen anyone play D&D before watching that red nose game. Because of that 1 hour one shot I now consider myself a Critter and I play in two campaigns...what a life changing CZcams video.
@@joelg598 Matt Mercer is magical, but the majesty of Critical Role is as much the excellent players as it is the DM, and just the friendship that shines through, that tells you what is possible when you play this game.
@@Saldio I really love CR, but I wouldn't call them excellent players. Video after Video I get so see that they only know half of their character skills.
They were still in their 40's or 50's episode of the second campaign when asking "what does that do" about skills that were used dozen of times before, like 'Bless of the trickster' or 'Bless'
They always forget to add some of their feats when dealing damage. Sam still asks in a 70's episode after having advantage on an attack, if he get's his sneak attack. And that's a core feature of his class....
I get that they only play once a week, and it's easier for me to recall their skills as I'm watching them more than once a week to get up to the current episode, but still, there things they really should know by now.
(And I myself only played like 3-4 times and DMed 1 4h game, so I don't have the biggest knowledge of DnD)
But what they are, are excellent actors and they play their roles really well, 98% of the time, which is REALLY good. But rule- and skill-wise, they lack a lot.

S: "I'm coming out for the Emmys. Are you going to be out there at the end of September? Maybe we could play?"

I admit, I know nothing about D&D... and yet, this is the most amazing goddamn thing ever. I genuinely love this, Stephen and Joe nerding out on national television is the greatest thing to ever be put on TV. I had the biggest smile on my face watching this, it was really wholesome seeing both of them enjoy a conversation about D&D. When Joe realized that Stephen really new what he was talking about you could feel the connection. It’s nice to see such popular people being nerds in front of a whole lot of people.
Absolutely loved this, they really were passionate about this and you can watch videos of both of them playing D&D, the fact Stephen even went a bit like "Screw the audience for a minute, I just need to know more about his D&D campaigns" says a lot!

The guy is a living legend in D&D, (spoilers- for Vox Machina -spoilers) when a guest on Critical Role (Legend of Vox Machina is based off their D&D game), he stole the Hand of Vecna from the group while they were morning a fallen companion and escaped with it. It was one of the most bad ass moment I've ever seen in D&D.
Colbert doesn't hide how much of a nerd he is. I get the feeling his producers were like, "Hey we can get the guy from true blood that's married to Sofia. Wanna interview him about the shows he's done?"
Meanwhile Colbert's just thinking, "SWEET. I get to talk D&D!"

When Timothy Chalamet came on, he basically redirected the entire interview to talk about Dune, which no one is even promoting yet and doesn't come out until next year.
You know mostly everything you see on tv is scripted right? He has a writers room behind him and his guests are given talking points and keywords.

I started playing when I got to uni (2013) but people in my area still thought DnD was for weird nerds. I took it a step further with LARP (2017) and my parents legit think I'm worshipping Satan.
Tangeena Islam: Not quite the same thing, but I'm from the Deep South, U.S.A., and Southern Baptists believe so much stuff is connected to Satan (good thing that, unlike Manganiello, I never got into Hard Rock or Metal music; they would have dragged me into the church for an 'anointing' ^_^)
Chup Smith: If it was me, I think it'd be worth it to do a performance piece (making sure a friend got it all on tape), where I incited them to anoint me, then started screaming in my best demon voice, "MORE HOLY WATER, MY ASS ISN'T CLEAN ENOUGH!"
I'm so glad that Joe and Stephen are so genuinely passionate about D&D (not just being trendy). It gives me hope that I can eventually get enough people truly interested in setting up a campaign. haha
I love how Stephen and Joe are ACTUALLY deep DnD fans and have been for decades.....
And they low-key used this interview to teach the audience about the game and some basic rules.

I'm sad it took me 5 years to find the nerdiest conversation to ever grace Stephen Colbert. It's interesting that the audience is completely lost, but the joy rolls on in these two and it's wonderful
I may not have understood all of the references, but this was too freaking awesome to watch. Kudos to Colbert and Manganiello for staying true to their inner nerd!

Yeah, that D&Diesel video kinda proves Joe right though. Vin seemed like he was kinda lost the whole time. Especially for an actor, he looked like a fish out of water. He reminds me of the guy that LOVES Lord of the Rings, but calls Gandalf "Ganondorf".

Stephen looked so happy to nerd out with Joe! My college boyfriend introduced me to D&D several years ago. It was pretty fun to learn all the rules and play along with my dorm buddies.

Stephen was literally the perfect talk show host to interview Joe Mananeillo about this.
As a guy who played D&D way back in the 80's, I love this. There were so many good times playing with friends and making fun stories, and that's when it wasn't 'cool' to be a nerd, but we all had a great time together. This, and the team from Critical Role really make me smile as I watch and remember those times.
I wish I could go back in time and show this video to my high school self back in the days when being 'a nerd meant something' :)
It is so heartening to see D&D and tabletop RPGs gaining popularity thanks to Hollywood personalities like Stephen Colbert and Joe Manganiello. The magic was always there, now it's finally coming out of hiding.

Stephen is so refreshing as an interviewer! No bullshit, no derogatory comments. Just a genuine bloke asking relatable questions. Very similar to Graham Norton without the booze :)
I can't help but feel like critical role helped so much both for Joe's new clothing line and for that revitalization of DnD that hes been putting together
Watching Joe talk shop about D&D makes me so happy. Watching Stephen match him beat for beat has me crying happy tears.
The only thing is I wish he had mentioned that he played live streams, and point people to watching Force Grey and Critical Role if they want a great example of what the hell he's talking about.
i just love him more now the fact that he was proud to go on national television and say that he;s really into something most of society would cringe at. #respect

Watching Stephen’s reaction to Joe explaining 5th Edition character creation rules put a big ol’ dorky smile on my face. I want to play D&D with Stephen so much. And of course Joe rolls a natural 20 the one and only time he picks up the die.
The path to Colbert's Guest Role on Critical Role is underway! Too bad Joe didn't Mention CR and Matthew Mercer. Stephen is Matt's bucket list Guest Player.
Stephen is definitely on the path, but I don't think a guest appearance on CR would have made logisitical sense at this point. The Emmys are on a Monday night, when Stephen would be visiting before likely returning on a morning flight since he has his nightly show to host. Rescheduling the entire cast and crew for CR to be able to play on Monday would have been a logisitical nightmare if it was even possible at that point (since all the players, Matt, and the crew have other duties through their days and likely intentionally leave their Friday mornings somewhat lighter due to their typical late Thursdays).
I hold out hope that we will see his guest appearance someday, but this trip was just too spur of the moment to work out.
If they ever have Stephen for a game, it will most likely be a pre-recorded one-shot, CelebriD&D style.
I always come back to this interview. This is wholesome.

Most likely the result of this segment I suspect. Although... he did say a lot of writers play at his house, so maybe it was going to happen one way or another.

I was thinking about that episode during almost this whole segment.
I just failed my saving throw to resist watching another Colbert video.
This man just described my childhood, teenage years, and most of my adulthood (since I'm not dead yet).
I love understanding this conversation and knowing that the half the audience is so confused
I love these two trying to out nerd each other.
See, I knew I did something wrong during the 31 years of my life. I should had STOPPED playing DnD as a teenager, then be handsome, star in TV shows and movies, get rich and famous along the way, marry Sofia Vergara, and THEN continue playing DnD, it was so simple!
