Pro 3 Sound Design & Understanding Envelopes // Creating the Sound in my Head

- I've had this sound in my head for a few days so its finally time to put myself to the test and see if i can make it! This video serves as a sound design walk through of creating an evolving pad sound. Heavily utilizing Envelopes and modulation of the filter we can add a lot or a little bit of movement to the sound. Starting with some wavetable action, this creates an interesting oscillator core that we can work with to further manipulate into, hopefully, creating something beautiful.

Feels like I'm watching the Bob Ross of synths. The sounds with the feedback nearly had me in tears. Love it.
A few weeks ago, I had no intention of buying another hardware synth after being pretty happy in the software / VST world for years now. My friend sent me this video randomly -- the patch you made blew my mind. What a crazy analog/digital hybrid synth! As a Virus A owner, this synth's characteristics spoke to me.
I pretty much went on a journey looking at the different hardware synths out there, just for fun. I kept coming back to watching Pro 3 videos. Drawing comparisons to other synths (Like the MatrixBrute, for example). Pro 3 kept winning my interest. Slowly I got the urge to buy one. And then I did!
I credit this video and the amazing job you did showing what a broad range of sounds this synthesizer is capable of. An incredible, unintentional performance emerged out of an innocent envelope tutorial video. Well played man. You sold a synth! Thank you.
Bought mine 3 days ago :-) I was thinking about Trigon 6 but Pro 3 won. Next one will be OB-6 or one of Prophets. Going back to create some sounds.
My eyes are drawn to the TR909 in the background!!!
👀
The next video maybe?
Hell yea
I was eyeing it too lol
single inverted envelope on the filter would work just fine, attack would be your initial short pluck and decay the "come back" of the sound. Set range using cutoff and amount. Muss less hassle and more straight forward to use.
Please do more of these with the Pro 3. Your first video review was like an album created on the fly. I’m thinking this may become my next instrument. Such a deep and rich synth. You clearly connected with it straight away.
13:26 every time you start making music with an idea but end op with something totally different sounding sick
18:38 Hans Zimmer enters the video
hahaha
Wow. short rant coming up:
I remember watching this a couple of years ago right before buying my first synth. atm this hidden gem of a video only got 55k views. - But still! 55k people have been blessed with this perfect introduction to sounddesign.
its been 2 years since I bought the Moog Grandmother and short time after the Matriarch. Now my room is filled with synths, compressors and modules and a diploma in electronic music. I must give you a huge thanks, Ricky.
Thanks for helping me choose the right path. My life has changed drastically for the better and your videos was part of my guidance.
sorry for getting personal.. but man I loved this video!
I confess I did not get the appeal of the sound you were driving towards until you brought in the verb and started doing the Vangelis keyboard routine. Then I was like damn, dude could hear that waiting to happen, sick.
Not that I leave the house, but with a Pro 3 I would never leave the house.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
Would appreciate if yall checked out my beats and gave me some feedback.
@@94luv520 get better at the keys and create atleast 4 different sections in your music. The only ones who don’t make it in music are the ones who quit.
@@livefromthepsy-op1170 Appreciate you bro ima try n keep getting better. To dragged out or straight forward?
Did you ever end up leaving the house?
Thanks Mr. M - this was a fun one. I like seeing you get out of your wheelhouse a little bit. You're enthusiasm really shows. I think I'd like to have a Pro 3 one day.
Your pure, unbridled enthusiasm is very inspiring. Thank you. 🙏🏼
Love this patch and the way you explained the envelopes was just perfect, thank you. Great video as always.
OMG. You gotta love the PRO 3!! What a synth. THE most inspiring, fun, accessible synth. ♥️
I haven't tuned into your videos in a good while and since I've been checking out a lot of interesting synth videos recently the algorithm gods brought me back and I'm so glad they did. This was such an experience. Always love what you do. I'm gonna have to do some catching up on your videos. Great work man!
Holy cow, that patch went there. What a lovely synth!
Awesome video Ricky! That synth is great.
Ah. You gave me something fun to do on my lunch break with my Electribe. 🤟🏿
Love it! and love to see yous till working in paraphonic mode and showing the character that can add to a sound! Great video as always!
Those sounds in the end are epic
Learnt an incredible amount from this video even though I don't own any physical synths yet I've learnt stuff I've been able to apply in Ableton and VST synths
All I want is more Pro 3 videos 🤩
Amazing sound design tool this, going in the future wishlist for sure would probably take a good few weeks to get how it works but the potential is limitless here.
For those learning about envelopes, the app KQ Dixie (an FM synth) has a beautiful representation of ADSR in action. And if you’re bummed by the lack of presets, it can load any Yamaha DX7 patch!
You have the coolest job man, good stuff as always!
Cheers for inspiring me to delve a bit deeper into my Peak right now nice 1
Thank you for these glorious sounds and the knowledge ☮️
All I can say is WOW! I’m super pumped to try some of this stuff in my microfreak
So, so lovely. Thanks, Ricky.
here again love the way you grimace (with pleasure) and walk away. I know the feeling
You really made something special at the end there brother
Great video Ricky! Thanks man. And yes, thanks Dave
Ricky is like the best friend - you never had ..... Top stuff man.. (and still loving my Pro 3) ...
For a newbie like me, this was a fascinating view into the process
Watched this video many tames before, and today finally I bought pro 3 as a companion to my Take 5. and now I watch this video again as an owner of pro 3).
I'm glad you found the sound you wanted. It's so frustrating if you have something in your head that you can't realize!
wow your a master at your craft bro ..really impressed !!
Great performance, inspiring and enthusiastic. I want a Pro3 too.
Something I really like about Ricky is that when you say something that's nonsense, you'll acknowledge and correct it instead of styling it out. Realness. I'm trying to learn FM on my RefaceDX (which only has one envelope) so the audio tutorials are also PD awesome of course, so thank you.
Wait isn't it one enveloppe per osc like the rest of the dx line?
@@TheGrelots You are correct! It’s one envelope per op and of course if you use e.g. a two into two algorithm you could probably produce something like the sound being done here. I should have a crack at getting as close as I can. My brain was for some reason thinking of two algorithms working together to create that delay. Thanks for the correction/reminder!
you can definitely achieve that one the reface dx as i've gotten something close! the interplay between the envelopes one of its strong suits actually!
happy sound designing!
@@nicog8062 I just remembered the built-in sound BuzzSiren has a similar arrangement.
@@Justin-TPG From my experience programming on the dx7 and sy77, you'll more often use the algorithms with multiple stacks than those that look complex. Don't know how far you are into fm but I'll ramble for a few paragraphs if you don't mind.
I like to start by build the main tones kind of like choosing your oscillators first on a substractive synth.
Single stacks are usefull either when you take an additive approach like on most preset e-pianos or when you need a sine wave (of course) I like to put them at a ratio of one and detune them to get a thicker fundamental or use two detuned sines as sub oscillators but that can feel a bit wastefull in a lot of patches.
Double stacks are the bread and butter, you can make pretty much any harmonic series with them so you can have the classic analog shapes as well as much more.
Three stack allow you to thicken the basic wave shape, they add harmonics above and below the harmonics from the basic 2 stack, 3 stack harmonics can be out of tune with the fundamental so you can get in harsh territory.
h stacks are boring and only to be used when you don't have enough oscillators
Y stacks are pretty cool and unique, first they let you save space by adding two harmonic series to one carrier but the cool part is that they let you do percussive sounds by setting one of the modulators with fast att and decay, better if it has feed back.
Then, I attack the enveloppes, yes pun intended.
The enveloppe on the carrier is like the amp enveloppe, as you realized you can achieve the same effect as ricky by having different enveloppes on each stacks. The ones on the modulators can wear a lot more hats, I like to think of them as filter or pulsewidth enveloppes. They change the timbre over time, they can make pads that evolve in an intersting way as well as many other things. this the meat of fm, how the modulation amount changes in relation to time, velocity, aftertouch and many other things.
Loving the harmonic overtones

🔥
This was tickling that Autechre realm of sounds. Nicely done
I have music contents check me out
for sure!
woah, that's sick. love it Ricky
great video. Knowledge is power indeed! Thank you, Ricky : )
Sounds awesome! 🔥🔥🔥😎👍🏼
Cinematic sound!
16:57 freaking beautiful man
If you started with an opened up filter and applied negative envelope amount you could create the attack dip then swell using 1 ADSR envelope instead of 2 envelopes and using delay.
Exactly!!!
great stink face, consistently great videos, thanks! always inspiring!
This is insane, following now
You are such an inspiration Ricky :)
that was dope! thanks a lot
that drone at the end 😍😍😍
Love these tutorials.
Dude, no need to keep it short. I could watch this for hours...
DAMN that synth is a beast.
Beautiful interesting and great!
yeah something to practise tomorrow thx lot
Ricky the synth-scape orchestrator Tinez, good work! As always.
Wanting to buy an Analog Rytm, but after your Pro 3 videos I am thinking about this beautiful synth. Maybe I need both.
That last building crescendo is sick. Feel like that should be used for a re-dub of Event Horizon.
Goddamn! I loved that sound at the very end!
This things is a F****** Beast bro like it’s an unEarthy like creature . Thanx for the video 🙏🏾
2:09 pretty sweet!
RICKY FUCKING TINEZ. I love you man. NO HOMO!!! You brighten my day boss.
whoa! did not see that ending drone coming at all
I really dig your approach and videos. I started as a turntablist for 17 years. started making beats from the original dr sample, then the sp505 groove sampling worksation,
anyways I had commented a while back about I just Got a launchkey slmk3, love it, Have had a pain in the arse trying to find info on our even use the components system or at least properly, Luckily I have a Minilogue and a Tr8, which takes the same messages more less as the tr8s( cool right?) anyway Icant find ish On the TD3, The Pro 1, The Crave, or The Cat- Im running all of them back into a mackie profxv3 to attempt a lil savings on pedals and such. Ive recently expanded my wings into modular and grabbed the 4ms spherical wavetable navigator and the 4ms spectral Multiband Resonator, ( i highly suggest others use both???? i have no idea why Im like the only person to have done this,. Ihave not seen it anywhere- and i didnt do it because they look dope. I actually planned those as my fist mods. Braids is comming in the mail tomm. (ok its a Braids Clone by Blue Lantern But hey 92 bucks-)
Deffinately need two adsrs (VCF-Envelope) its one of the only way to control the resonation on certain' 'drippy' sounds.
Very Jelly of your Synth WHOOOOOOO that looks like a bad mam jama, Im playing on the Pro one by Behringer and Im thoroughly impressed a Sequential Circuits PRO/phet is one of my bucket thing things RRRREEEEEESPECT
Nice video !
this is art
I never appreciated the multi stage envelope on my JD800 enough in the 90s, but probably should have : )
Hi Tricky Ricky Tinez ! Beautiful little unit ! 😎👍
problem with such long release and reverb is your melody needs to be build around it or you get weird harmonics. This can be well intended to be used to good effect, not the least because it's natural in any vibrating instrument, and ... I don't know what it's called in psycho accoustic, you get a contrast across notes anyway, like after images. The layered sound can still drown out the intended overtones I suppose, but you were going for a noisy pad anyway. Nicely done. Wait a second 18:38 remember Dr. Dre was sued by Lucas for copying the dolby surround trade mark sound logo 19:05 my goodness, a Spaceship entering a wormhole, is it. You'll enjoy the demoscene productions by Quiet, a lot.
Ok man......I've been watching your channel sporadically since i've started searching for infos on the "dawless movement" but this video made me subscribe :
- i thought you were a little "too nice" of a person (sort of a joke here...) but................this Phat Menacing Gorgeous Evolving Thing that you've created brings another layer i did not suspected.
- This was a real joyful example of life and creativity, a journey into the unknow from wich emerged a singular beast.
- On top of that, your reaction was a treat.
That was beautiful
You’re too nice you jerk !! Hahaha thanks for the sub I super appreciate it and thanks for kicking it :)
How’s the Dawless world been for you? I’m back in the half and half world
@@RickyTinez My pleasure....About the Dawless journey:
I've started making music a long time ago with a 4-Track and then discovered Daws and Vsts, but I'm getting a bit tired of loading times and crashes etc...
This is pretty cool to find people like you, Cuckoo, Bo Beats or Loopop to name a few.
We have a goldmine of informations to help us choose the gear that will suit us.
So recently i got myself a Model Samples and it is now clear that Elektron will have more of my money very soon ! I know that i'll still use Ableton and won't go totally Dawless, but i need to go back to something more organic, even if it involves plastic/metal boxes with knobs, pads and tiny screens.
Keep up the good vibe !!
That tuned feedback was straight up ear porn, so gnarly yet so pretty.
Oh man, the piano lessons do come in handy... Getting good
Keep coming back to this cuz Ricky wrote the sound to Dune in that last bit and didn’t go Hollywood
Beautiful lighting. What are you using for that?
Pro 3 gotta be the best UI in hardware synths.
Love it. Any chance you saved the patch and would like to share it? :) More Pro3 videos, please. I really like how you feel your way through sound creation.
I have music contents check me out
Sweet looking headphones. Are those Rosson RAD-0s? Are they good? Good for music production?
And I made it all the way through thinking "I don't need this synth", then you did that thing at the end. Gaah!
hahah! I LOOOVEEE the RAD-0s its hard to make music without them now tbh.. Kind of spoiled me in a weird way haha
9:45 baba is you vibes
Now i realize that my OB-6 is crap and build like crap. Does PRO3 have a kind of DAW integration?
damn that pro 3 is some evil shit
Yo how often do you use this synth? And do you use it with any of your MPCs?
You had me at "Don't lick 'em". Lol
Yeahyeah, pretty... but whats with the 909 in the background?
Next video?
I didn’t know you had a 909! Its sick!
I have music contents check me out
Thumbs up! :)
dope
Ever consider a separate channel for wordless performance videos? RMR has one and it's great
"Thank you David."
Ricky, is Pro 3 still can do such punching bass like it can Pro 1?
I would love a 6 voice of this synth. Call it the Pro 6 or Pro 8 would be awesome.
They already made a Pro 8!
@@lineoneL1 Needs these voices!
@@Digiphex unfortunately, the Pro 8 was nothing like this, it was just a re-badged Split 8.
Check out the prophet 12!
The Mad Scientist at it again!
Oh, mama, that's beatiful.
My lord, the Pro 3 is so tastey... But, is that a TR909 in the background?
oh damn i was thinking if this is a good synth for a beginner like me, but its so expensive rip
any chance you can let that last Csharp sound be available as a sample, its totally bonkers makes me feel like a kid man, please)))))))))
Ricky - If I'm sending midi clock to the Pro 3 will the Aux Envelope Dly switch to 1/4, 1/8, or 1/16th notes etc? so it locks in time with the track?
