On December 5th, 2001, elements of the Imperial Japanese Army rose up in rebellion against the Japanese government. With the stability of a crucial frontline nation hanging in the balance, a battle loomed upon the horizon.
In the world of Muv-Luv Alternative, humanity is at war with an alien race designated as the BETA. Due to the nature of their foe, mankind has developed Tactical Surface Fighters (TSFs) to better adapt to the battlefields of this new war. However, none of this has ever stopped humanity from engaging in their squabbles against one another.

@@crimsontabby Lol it was kind of a joke at the time, the specific pfp made for a good meme.....but really, on a deeper level, that kid was a hero. A little in over his head, sure, but absolutely knew the mission without even the perspective of being a higher up. Probably didn't even know Yui would show up to help, just signed up for the one way trip himself. Of course, he's alive in the VN, though not named...so maybe his heroics are just propaganda. I try to mimic historical channels, and the Corporal's story makes for a decent wartime myth.

Absolutely. Walken was talking the most sense, but I love the writing for demonstrating that it's more complicated than every government suddenly working together...because they're all run by good ol' politicians. Only the boots on the ground were working together.

Does SEAD not exist in the muv luv universe? I don't know a lot of the lore but I'm surprised that laser weapons with a max range of only 100km and in small numbers would make airforces useless. Modern air defence has a longer range than that. Am I missing something?
It does. It's called a Laserjagd (German for laser hunt). The issue is that Laser class accuracy requires only for them to look at you for a few seconds. A low flying aircraft can get in close, but it can't loiter the way a TSF can simply plant its feet on the ground and start shooting. Laserjagds require TSFs to rush into the back of a herd, neutralize all gathered clusters of Laser class, and then they will usually call in bombers to saturate the area, alongside arty. Air Forces mainly consist of transport and bombers as a result. With comparison to modern day vs BETA war, you have to keep in mind the urgency -- picking apart air defenses in a way that doesn't induce hundreds of aerial losses in one battle can't be rushed....but with a horde of thousands of aliens running across the battlefield, the only way for ground forces to win IS to rush that process. And that's what TSFs allow them to do

the awesome original OG content of this channel. you may have mentioned it in the vid but out of curiosity did you read the Alternative manga for this scene as well?
I saw a few frames, but mostly it comes from anime and VN. I didn't even have the codex at this time so it was all guesswork, despite the codex laying out everything quite clearly
@@yamamotomechbattles ah I see, the manga went into detail from the Raptor pilot's perspective during the incident so it shows exactly who fired and why, and also the reason why Walken's raptor locked up as soon as he tried to fight Sagari.

At their current power level, the BETA are little more than minor villains compared to them. Lots of guardsmen will die on the ground still but...that's what they're there for

Yeah there's a new adaptation that came out a few years ago: Muv Luv Alternative. It has two seasons. It's okay...first season dragged, and overall it's poorly received. But the mech fights are all top tier, and I enjoy the perfectly done military lore

Probably lol they would be a good match for one another on the battlefield. AoT's creator stated that he was inspired by Muv-Luv. The vertical maneuvering gear even kind of resembles TSF jump units. Welcome to the channel!

The fuji tactical training corp are not to be mess with they are the best of the best which play a huge roll in the future testing the new shiranui type 02 and 04 or shiranui the second and the f15j gekou the stealth version of the f15 in operation sledge hammer

I've watched the scene where the american pilot speak terrible english, i thought muv luv was about human vs human conflict and no xenos
It's mostly human v alien, but human v human is a huge theme because a lot of the stories (lots of spin-offs of this series) mirror real world conflicts where nations and soldiers might cooperate but they still have self-serving politicians in charge

Anime portrays that Walken would've won if not for the CIA locking out his mech controls. Then again if Sagiri has a Rafale then things are significantly different.
As sad as it may seem the Shiranui was only matching the checkboxes for a 3rd generation With only a few more years of technological advancements making 2.5th generation TSFs almost equally as good. Shiranui Second was a much-needed upgrade for the mech to retain its third generation title. I'd even go as far as to claim Type-94 is retroactively a quasi-3rd generation.
Nationalism and Idealism has no place in the fight for the survival of the human race, and though some actions are disgusting they may be the only reason why many nations still keep on fighting.
The Muv Luv story always has a very nuanced approach to these subjects, exploring the lengths to which they help in the fight when applied correctly, and then the other extreme to where they hurt the fight when applied poorly...such as with the IJA Nationalists. Even the main characters can't exactly rise above this, and while Takeru is idealistic, he also has to learn to be realistic...whereas I think Yuuko is a foil to him, her methods and mindset are entirely realistic, but deep down inside she wants the end result to be idealistic despite using somewhat insane levels of pragmatism to get there.

Yep, they sometimes also go by Imperial Japanese Mainland Defense Force (IJMDF) in this universe too. They are like a combination of IJA and JSDF.
All seasons of muv luv alternative is a very2 nice, & amusing anime, but in the end of every season it is also a really dissappointing anime, hope to see, the rest of its another season
I agree. Never getting to adapt it up to the end is so tragic. Total Eclipse killed me by doing that, and then Alternative is probably doing that as well now

hmm, not knowing any of this at all so my statements are ignorant. that first general did the right thing in sacrificing few for the many that had no means of defending themselves at all. if not for the lives of the many, why fight at all. they shouldn't have executed him, as that clearly caused an issue with making people feel stronger about his actions being right, like sagiri. i get why Sagiri did what he did, makes total sense to me, granted i don't know any nuance at all, but everything shown here shows that the country was being overtaken by external forces. the japanese people were being pushed around like they didn't matter, so of course he would feel the way he did. at least he tried to make things right, versus hoping things would go their way when it was showing they weren't.
Yeah I think the execution was the huge issue. They could've had him demoted or arrested to not keep triggering such resentment. Sagiri decided to take action and do what he thought was right, and in Muv-Luv, just about every action taken by a human character has a degree of "doing what's right" behind it. It's like every person in this setting has one piece of the puzzle, and sometimes they'll fit that piece with someone else's, but most of the time they'll go around insisting their one piece has solved the entire puzzle itself. Sagiri's choices were for the betterment of Japan and its people, just as the US was acting for the betterment of the US, and there were people on both sides who all had the nuance to criticize each approach, as well as the other factions involved.
At first I couldn't stand how it wasn't a clear black and white issue, but now I think it's a brilliantly written political crisis. Anyway, I've read all your comments and would like to reply to all of them. Thanks for digging into the content and really engaging with it!

Alternative is the bizarro world where things aren't as fun as the dating sim world...and it's about that dating sim MC learning to grow up and take life a bit more seriously. Crazy how the military aspect is kind of secondary to the original genre, and yet is done so well

Has this world never heard of artillery or rocket artillery? I mean you don't always have to use aircraft.
They have plenty of tactics involving indirect fire. The aliens can snipe those midair as well. And of course, there are actually plenty of ways that humans take advantage of that in turn. You should read the VNs; once you get to the war, they cover a lot of the lore and doctrine and it's up there as one of the most in-depth examples of military worldbuilding within a narrative I've read

He was extremist for sure, especially for killing civilians. My favorite Imperial soldier is probably Lt Col Iwaya, Yui's uncle. He has his head on straight

I've always wondered how an all-AI TSF unit would do against the BETA. They're not effective when we see them in-canon, but we never see them fight aliens en masse.
