  • KLTV recently visited the Antilles Credit Union in Huddersfield as part of this year's Heritage Open Days, England’s largest festival of history and culture.
The exhibition explored the history of the Credit Union, from its beginnings when it was set up by pioneers from the Windrush generation as a Pardner saving system, to its modern-day use as a social club for gatherings and events.
Research conducted for the exhibitions highlighted how the credit union supported the African Caribbean communities in Kirklees, helping them access a money-lending system when traditional banks would not help.
The informal scheme was based on cooperation and trust, and provided much-needed financial security for the Windrush generation and their descendants.
Today the building is used as a social club and bar, offering space for events and weekly gatherings for local communities. Antilles Credit Union stands as a testament to the innovation, resilience, and spirit of the African Descent Community in Kirklees.
This research project was undertaken by Locorum and Building African Caribbean Communities and supported by the School of Arts and Humanities, University of Huddersfield. Learn more about Locorum at www.locorum.org.uk/
