Filter direct does matter, Also you installed the filter wrong The sides will have gaps.. That is why its hanging up when trying to remove it. Rotate 90 degrees and reinstall arrow flow pointing down..
The arrows point downward, if you bought a filter from Toyota or removed one, you would see there are 2 arrows, one for direction of installation and the other for flow..
You need to do a little research if you believe it doesn't matter if you put it in correctly or not. People get confused with Toyota (and Subaru and Range Rover) because the OEM filters have arrows which indicate"this side UP" but most aftermarket filters have arrows that indicate "AIR FLIW direction" which as you correctly stated is down, not up.
