You did a really good job taking an emotional song and covering it with an equal amount of emotion, but also a very different one. The original singer's voice is full of submission and defeat, and even at the parts where they sound angry, it still doesn't compete with the suffocating ocean of helplessness that it can only barely eek out of. Here, your voice makes it sound like the subject of the song is a second away from snapping completely, forcing a smile on their face in a desperate and surely temporary attempt to hide their rage that's just barely boiling beneath the surface. Both feelings are appropriate to the song itself, so I'd call this a very successful cover. Excellent work.
I love this cover. Compared to the pure angst of the original this sounds lighter but they way she smiles and the “I am drowning” part makes her seem so furious that she’s reached the point of smiling like a deadly happy if that makes sense
way to hit "DIE" just right around the one-minute mark; i've been trying to calibrate my own performance to find that sweet spot between sarcasm and hurt--this will be my reference!
At first I wasn't a big fan of the cover because, and this is a bit odd to say but, I thought your voice was too 'pretty' to go with the style of the song. But after about 45 seconds into the song it started growing on me, and I definitely liked the style of it. Like FuzzyPickles42 said, you took the lyrics of the song and applied a different set of emotions to it, but ones that worked perfectly well. I was a bit worried that the song would basically just be sung for the sake of the artist to show off their playing and singing, but ultimately this cover more than does the original justice - not only did it avoid just singing the lyrics to the song simply to sound pretty, you crafted her own style to the subject and it worked, rather than just going for the same style as the original.
Lyrics: I hope that our few remaining friends Give up on trying to save us I hope we come up with a fail-safe plot To piss off the dumb few that forgave us I hope the fences we mended Fall down beneath their own weight And I hope we hang on past the last exit I hope it's already too late And I hope the junkyard a few blocks from here Someday burns down And I hope the rising black smoke carries me far away And I never come back to this town again In my life, I hope I lie And tell everyone you were a good wife And I hope you die I hope we both die I hope I cut myself shaving tomorrow I hope it bleeds all day long Our friends say it's darkest before the sun rises We're pretty sure they're all wrong I hope it stays dark forever I hope the worst isn't over And I hope you blink before I do And I hope I never get sober And I hope when you think of me years down the line You can't find one good thing to say And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out You'd stay the hell out of my way I am drowning, there is no sign of land You are coming down with me, hand in unlovable hand And I hope you die I hope we both die
as I craft a note on my anniversary I needed a cover of "our" song to bring home the point of our odd & wonderful journey so far. Your lovely gift offered to the universe is smashing. all my gratitude. :scott:
Eh, I'm brodie, as your lipstick is amaaaazing. Thanks for covering this song. The Mountain Goats, This Year, Lovecraft In Brooklyn -- there are holes in my carpet. There are burn marks. Dance Music grabs me and there is no sight of land.
You really made me happy with this. A word I hate using, but will do in this one instance. I consider happiness in the classical sense, a moment that enraptures you because the divine itself is interfering in the regular ol' mortal order of things in your life. You gave me a version of a song that already shaped my earlier life new meaning. I can't speak for more than m'self, but the original version is an anthem for my 20s and this version is what I think might be an anthem for my upcoming 30s. The musical content is the same, but the voice and tone are so distinguished. You really delivered a special take on what would have been an otherwise utterly unique song. You spoiled that with being too damn good E>
1 year since I saw this comment. I can't thank you enough, this comment is the reason I checked out Laura's cover, which is what turned me on to Laura in the first place, and I honestly cannot imagine my life without her music at this point. I saw her in concert last December and it was so perfect, I even got to talk to her a bit. I truly believe that I would not have known about her music if not for your comment, and for that I am so, so grateful.

This is a really fucking good cover. I like it a lot, because this song is entirely about what it's like for a man to be in abusive relationship with a woman, and it's cool to hear it from a different perspective.
Very good. There isn't anything I can say that hasn't already been said. Great cover. I'm impressed and I'm not easily impressed. Keep doing what you are doing.
You're gorgeous AND you rocked the fuck out of that song. If there's never a collaboration between you and John, a great tragedy will have befallen us.

The end of the lyric of "you'll stay the hell out of my way" is SO POWERFUL like WOW!!!
I love hearing this song sung from a woman's voice. This is the best cover of this song I've ever heard! Cheers
You've inspired my daughter to learn this song on her ukulele. I cannot thank you enough.

Hey there ! Is it okay if I use this cover song in an animation I’m making ? ^^ it’s ok if not by the way !

It’s been a while since you have posted a video. I hope that you are still doing folk music. You’re quite good. 🙃 It would be a shame not to.
nice
Tabs/chords???
Any chance you live in New England and wanna jam this????
what key is this?
Would you be able to post the chords you used?
Tutorial?
does anybody have the chords for this arrangement?
You are AMAZING
And I was looking for a cover of this song because I love the original guitar but I don't like the guy who sings.
John's voice is an aquired taste.
Same!
So beautiful. I came here specifically to find a more feminine version of the song.
It almost stings more with how much salt in the original song is replaced with sugar in this version.
You're gorgeous AND you rocked the fuck out of that song. If there's never a collaboration between you and John, a great tragedy will have befallen us.
