    Good on you man I love diy paint jobs, but here’s a little advice:
    1. Paint from the top down aka start on the roof and the next tallest surface
    2. Do 2 light coats and one heavy coat 10 minutes between coats
    3. Fill your sprayer with water and food coloring and practice painting on like cardboard
    I’ve been diy painting for quite a few years and practicing helps the most

      That guy ain't lying. Especially with the way that gun was throwing paint out like it was. Couple light almost dust coats will help the paint stick and not run, then you can hit it with a heavier coat or 2. You'll still deal with orange peel considering the equipment your using, but it'll probably be easier to fix later

    Here’s your problem. It was your first time using the tool to paint a car so some learning is in order. However, like you said, with some wet sanding, they paint job will look TIGHT! It looks great overall and I think the next thing you paint with that sprayer is gonna look even better.
    Overall, it looks incredible and I’m inspired to get one for my house AND resting my VW Bus. Thank you my friend!

    To much to fast. To close. Take your time, lay a light coat for adhesion then move back and start from top to bottom addressing the creases first. Good job for a beginner tho👍🏾

      I disagree. Tack coat is bull shit. If u sanded it right and cleaned it right. Being black color you want to lay it out as smooth as possible. With that turbine sprayer that means horns in and wide open. But that’s just 20 years of painting talking

    Thanks for posting. Painted my 1965 Dodge Dart using Interlux Brightside 1-part polyurethane "boat paint". I had used that on a camping trailer with smooth sides which came out shiny and smooth using the "roll & tip" method (foam roller followed by foam brush to pop the bubbles). It is "self-leveling" and got only a few runs on vertical surfaces, mostly at corners which scuffed paint off the roller. For the Dart, I used an HVLP sprayer for the Interlux pre-Kote primer (poly which sands), but a bit too much orange-peel (sanded smooth). For color coat, I tried a Wagner 200 electric sprayer (airless) which I figured would conserve paint (less overspray), but not any better than the HVLP. It kept leaking from the nozzle connection to leave a few drips. Got orange-peel too, but wet-sanding after a day w/ 1000 grit got rid of it (much work). Waiting a month to harden before cutting w/ a polisher and hopefully thick enough to not cut thru. Since I rigged a paint booth in a carport (hung tarps around, box fan w/ filter to keep positive pressure), I'm doing my 1985 M-B, with Interlux primer but pricey 2-part poly auto paint since had to match existing. My air compressor failed during priming, so switched to the Wagner electric and it dripped worse than before (even after trying to add an O-ring at nozzle tip), but finished. A few runs but sanding will cure. Will buy another compressor. Only surety is that things will go wrong whenever painting.

    And with that gun and volume of paint coming out thinned that way, your not a bad spray man, those runs were expected.
    God luv ya for giving it your best effort. A smaller air compressors with a 5 gallon harbor freight extra tank added to a smaller compressor
    Would get you thru half the hood, wait a min for air to build up , then spray the other half of the largest surface like the hood. I did a car this way
    with a double tank air compressor adding the overflow 5 gal tank for reserve. Then you could spray with harbor freight cheaper hvlp gravity cup gun. With the right tip orifice.

    you can not color sand/wet sand flat paints because you cant buff them. Only sand it if you plan on repainting, like you could probably sand out the run and do a spot in/ blend job and make it look ok. possibly even with a rustoleum spray can. as far a getting rid of the orange peel you'll have to repaint the whole car. I use a 1.4 tip when painting only use a 1.8 for primers.

    You’ve got the Right Attitude ... not getting butt-hurt over negative Comments. Constructive Criticism is another thing. Practice makes perfect. Every attempt will get easier & better. Watch more YT vids. I went to PPG School. Developed ‘technique’ after each job. Someone said hose over shoulders. That was one thing I learned EARLY, after dragging hose in fresh pass on roof. Now, it’s ALWAYS across my shoulders.
    Develop your Pass Technique - consistent speed, distance, STRAIGHT lines. Back & forth, short strokes not ideal. As others have said, takes patience but lighter coats at first to give adhesion. Then progressively ‘heavier’ passes.
    A smaller tip size would have atomized paint better. The turbine doesn’t supply enough air Volume to properly atomize with “normal” tip sizes, so try going one or two ‘smaller’.
    You’ll keep getting Better, and the Attitude is Right. Just make adjustments, trial & error. Do not repeat same (techniques), until you are very proficient.
    👍🏼
    PS Forgot to mention, ALWAYS test your spray pattern on sheet of paper, cardboard, or window masking, before beginning Passes. It’ll help fine tune BEFORE laying down material.

    Reducer vs acetone both alow the paint to lay smooth but with acetone it's one shot you can not lay strips or touch ups over it or it will wrinkle as with reducer you can strip touch up and secont coat without wrinkles. Yes reducer is 4 times the price and dries slower but is the best choose in my eyes

    Just know it's a art to painting , you go with the lines, you cover a whole piece at at time , you go evenly across from top to bottom or vice versa, you don't just start spraying all over, you don't hold it for to long in one spot, you get in the correct spray distance to evenly allow the paint to lay in it's correct place , you allow to dry then go over bad areas , or sand bad spots to go over ....

  • @hugot12
    @hugot12 Před 3 lety +7

    First that is a turbine fed hvlp not airless. High volume low pressure air. You just needed a finer tip on the gun. Your spraying solvents which go thru the big tip orifice you have very fast and heavy. I think you thinned just right, you don’t need Japan dryer, that acetone and hardener will cure that paint just fine. That sprayer is for the average joe to spray fences house siding, and with a finer tip it can pull off spraying some cabinets, but not with how big the gun is going inside the cabinets. I only needed to see a few seconds of spraying that the tip orifice was too large. They are made for thicker water base paints. You could have sprayed that solvent material with a harbor freight gun, You would have needed a good air compressor though to have enough volume of pressure to keep the air flowing as you needed. I’m a specialty painting contractor of 44 yrs spraying with any type of sprayers you can think of. The grace 9.5 hvlp turbine air with the graco edge 2 plus gun with a number 3 tip is what your really after here if your wanting to use a turbine hvlp spray setup. You little sprayer might work, but only with a finer tip orifice. You just covered the black way too fast, the orange peel must have been terrible, if it was a gloss you were spraying , oh boy !

    • @sdaafasfad
      @sdaafasfad Před 3 lety

      Question for you - I have the very same sprayer and have been considering painting my car with it but have been very wary about it for this exact reason - I'm not too keen on getting runs. Orange peel isn't too bad cos I would flatten it down with an 800 grit and then hit it with a clear coat and then hit it with 1500 trizact to buff the clear coat.
      With regard to the nozzle - will any nozzle size fit on the gun? Or does it need to specifically be built for this gun? You get three in the box and can change between circular, vertical and horizontal when painting. I think vertical would be best and it looks like OP used circle.

    • @hugot12
      @hugot12 Před 3 lety

      @@sdaafasfad do not try this with that sprayer, the air pressure might work but you would need a smaller tip orifice , an accessory
      item. Remember this is done in light layers. Once a light mist coat as a first coat is applied, it dries tacky like how masking tape would feel.
      Then a second coat would absorb into that tacky coat and cling to it without the possibility of major runs. You need a coat that the solvents will absorb into. Its the right environment thats warm so it sets up well. The right solvent for the temperature where your spraying.
      Build the coats medium wet, watch it as it goes on so its not too dry a coating. Be robotic as to how consistantly your the right distance from the surface so you dont flood it on, or too dry a coat either. If you have a decent air compressor, for less than 50$ Harbor Freight has an Hvlp gun with the right tip orifice size for automotive viscosity paint, which is thin. You dont want to get into sanding down orangepeel, thats10 times the work over spraying it right with minimal orangepeel in the first place . If you do get a smaller tip size and do spray a lighter dryer base color coat, then the clearcoat will be your finish coat, if you go with a 2 stage application. Clear coats come at package consistency, not all require thinning with solvents. These clearcoats are very user friendly with the right tip size to avoid runs or too dry a coating for it to flow. You dont want to be sanding down your clearcoat and buff it down if at all possible, its too much work. Just decide if the vehicle is only worth doing a single stage color coat application made to be without a clearcoat, thats not so bad.

    I feel like maybe it might have had too much reducer in the mix, and I always start painting on the roof first, so in case I lean against the car during the process. I may have to play with this process myself. Good vid.

    I have sprayed a ton of things with Rust-Oleum. Try using mineral spirits to thin next time. It dries slower, but fast drying is what causes orange peel. Love the look!

    never seen someone spray with airless system. I think 4:3 is to much reduced and you had the runs. also the sprayer fan pattern was nice but i think its just not atomizing the paint enough.
    i did a few paint jobs rustoleum on my channel and im still learning.
    Good job overall good video and clean content!
