But if you do put in the legwork, you'll find that all of the essentials and a lot of the "nice-to-haves" are perfectly available locally. For example, I wanted to buy a cowboy hat. Like, where, if not online, would you eve *shop* for a cowboy hat? Thus, I bought a few from Amazon and had to return all of them because they were garbage. I finally got sick of the trips to UPS and searched locally. And guess what? There was a boot barn 20 minutes away with hats in stock. Was in and out of the store with my perfect hat that day.

Amazon accused me of leaving a "racist review" - they wouldn't tell me what I allegedly said or on what item the review was allegedly left. Just that I now have "one strike" and there's nothing I can do about it. I went back through my reviews and looked and none of them have been removed and none of them are personal or in any way "racist." The closest I come to being insulting is accusing an author of a book of plagiarizing half of it (but I provided examples, and this review is still up). Amazon is such a giant company that they can't even figure out what it is you did wrong, just that they know they're right about it.

People’s opinions do count when people become in large numbers and get to a point they can’t ignore. There are certain laws and regulations of prohibiting monopoly business and it always results in unfair practices to consumers. There are antitrust laws in place in the U.S. and companies like the scale of Amazon has been successfully challenged and they had been slapped before. The famous one was in 1994 of Microsoft. It was acting very entitled, setting terms and conditions unfair to customers and treating employees like crap. The thing is they are going against people’s rights of freedom of speech. Censorship itself is a fine line companies should be very careful. We can easily challenge them as we aren’t in a country like China or Russia.

Not sure if you are aware of it or not but there is apparently in some branches of amazon and similar sites that deliver for other companies both positive and negative marketing review wars. Where bots or other sheningan accounts give bad reviews to a competing corporations product to push their own to the top of search lists.
You could have been mistakenly been caught in a bot search against such practises. I already had enough of my inquiries fall on deaf ears there. Remember those right to repair rules Biden's executive order asked the FTC to draft in 2021? Remember the anti trust attorney I paid $50k+ to assist them with the process of understanding the repair landscape? This is the business equivalent of "locking someone up on a humble". They found a very minor infraction on your account, and simply used that as an excuse (under the strictest interpretation of their TOS) to cancel your account. It's transparent behavior, but they don't care about that. For Amazon, there is zero risk of being called out publicly for this action, and their benefit is to take you off of their platform. It's a win/win for them.

Doorbell guy here. I'm 100% aware that the echos are temporary. Anything that needs a cloud connection will definitely be a paper weight at some point (I assumed 5-10 years). Now for my real infrastructure (since I self host most of my own stuff so I was not really affected at all by amazon though people never read the article) the only thing that's gonna turn those machines into paper weights will be something critical breaking that I can't replace or simply 15-20 years has passed and newer hardware is just blatantly better.
Also keep in mind that Amazon gave out the echos like hot cakes. I got at least half of mine for "free" when buying other stuff. Again, for me they are replaceable auxiliary units. We just used Siri when Alexa was down cause I have basically nothing dependent on Alexa besides the ease of use of not need your phone on you in the house.
I didn't expect to get "canceled" by Amazon though and have them basically take away devices I bought. I knew at times AWS would be down, or internet would be down, power, etc. Didn't think that though.

PS: Twitter is also partly hosted on AWS as well. Strangely, their content isn't bad enough to be shut down.

Amazon blocked me from leaving reviews for over 2 years. At the time they blocked me I was about 2 months into my Amazon prime membership. I called and complained and asked them to refund my membership fee. They refused. I argued with them for a long time because they wasn't going to let this go. I wasn't getting anywhere so I had them escalate this and they put me on with someone higher. I told them that they had effectively stolen my money because I was unable to access all of the features of my acct. This argument went on for a lot longer but it ended when I told them I was recording the entire interaction which I was. I got my refund and never signed up for prime again. They eventually restored my ability to leave reviews but often block individual reviews. I hate shopping with them but I live in a rural area and find it next to impossible to find a lot of things that I need. I was an insider. I don't think it is a coincidence, but I have something else you might want to consider. We seem to have developed a culture in tech companies that push these decisions down to a very low level, essentially the equivalent of 'help desk' work. Think 20 year old kids making minimal pay, contractors in miserable sweatshops, high turnover and a crappy work environment all together. I was a manager of managers in IT. In my experience the first line managers in these business units generally have large staff and no idea what's going on except for the time the person clocked in and out. Nothing like this hits a managers desk until things go really bad and someone at the Director level sees it in the national press.
There are several things that could have happened. I saw all of these while I was there.
    1) We had a person that was malevolent, envious, and completely hate their jobs (open about it on social media). They were given an opportunity to exercise power on someone they didn't agree with and had almost no chance of facing repercussions. They took out their frustrations on others, and eventually it boiled over to work and they were let go. But they crapped on a lot of customers before they were caught.
    2) In our company, we gave the people responsible for these things a webpage with buttons to produce these emails. They were vague, reviewed by legal with carefully crafted double-speak, and were generic in every way. For the role, you just had to push the button to send it out. You could literally just send them out all day without having to read or research anything to make your quota. I walked up behind someone and watched them just click one of the default buttons every 2 seconds for 15 minutes until I 'had' to walk away.
    3) We had the same issue internally only with less/no malevolence. For example, I had a problem with an expense report. I sent finance an email, they sent me boilerplate. I responded, they sent me the same boiler plate, I reached out via slack, you guessed it, same (identical) boiler plate. It finally took me digging up the persons phone on the internal org chart and calling her directly. At that point I was nice, she was nice, and she went out of her way to get me a clear answer from a higher level person. I got great service. She was a sweet kid but she was clearly distracted and overwhelmed with the volume she was dealing with and this wasn't an external request. There was simply no time for her to do a good job and that button seemed like a no-brainer. Before you ask, no they didn't want to fix the issue. Our mission was selling product, not doing a good job.

They do what they are told. Some underling seeing Luis's coverage of what happened and deciding to cancel the account is pretty damn slim. ....And why would they have an underling do it? Cause management can't be bothered with something so "small". Also, potential plausibility from said management person
Unless they decided to do it themselves it because they thought it would earn them a promotion. And if so, they are just utterly dumb because it's more likely to get them fired. There is currently a Teamster suit against Amazon in California near Palmdale involving Delivery Drivers like myself. Essentially, Amazon claims they don't have to negotiate with unions because they don't directly employ the drivers. THIS case I think will blow their claims out. They can't claim to be a contracting party and yet cancel accounts and services for customers upon complaints from a driver. I've been weighing involvement and now I think I'm going to offer up my own assistance to the suit.
