He was definitely considered a bow-tie wearing square in the mid 1960s thru to 1988, when he morphed and appeared leather-clad and singing his big Prince hit, Kiss.
Before ultra-shrewd and ultra-able manager, Gordon Mills, discovered Tom singing in a Welsh pub in 1964, Tom wanted to be a leather-clad out and out blues singer. It was Gordon who persuaded him to sing middle of the road songs as this was where the big money was to be made.

The comparatively minor Motown star Tom unashamedly copied vocally, was Brook Benton. Tom talks about this in some early interviews and also, in the very early and pre-star days, legend Jerry Lee Lewis was Tom's biggest influence.

He implied that he'd toned the number down and he'd sold himself out by appearing on Tom's show! Then it got worse. I won't repeat what Tom said Pickett had said--but it was racial, ugly and very sad. Still--gotta love these rock and roll biographies, so interesting and historical.

Wilson Pickett was being an ass plain and simple. Tom Jones had nothing but LOVE For black artists and ALWAYS gave them the recognition openly that he felt they deserved. He showcased them regularly on his show and at that time during prime time, in those days that was a BIG DEAL. And that respect and recognition was reciprocated from black artists back to Sir Tom.
Pickett was a nasty piece of work when he wanted to be and his reputation as a extremely difficult and at times confrontational person to work with was well documented. His beating at the hands of some members from the Hells Angels probably had an interesting back story which likely involved his attitude and running off at his mouth to the wrong people.

I know exactly what you mean. He always supports his guests, lets them take the lead, then pushes them to their limits. He puts the music before his ego. Watch how he always watches the artist to follow their lead, and then takes it to the next level when it's his turn. Not all singers can or will do that.

@Heir apparent Nah...He doesn't not even close. The "Gravelly voice is the soul". Tom was simply a Pop singer with a soulful sound and not a soul singer. This was nice and I'm sure people like yourself would put this in the soul category. But nope. No soul hits to speak of. This was a produced special and as good as Tom is he really couldn't handle with the likes of FULL Wilson Pickett or a Joe Ligon of the Mighty Clouds of Joy, or Dennis Edwards of the Temptations and definitely not a James Brown. Who by the way challenged him to a dance contest. Tom wouldn't do it. He didn't want that heat. When Tom Jones is on the Soul Charts with his own hits then we'll he dub him a soul brother. By the way, its not unusual (pun intended) for several of our White brothers. Hall and Oates, went to #1 with I Can't Go For That and had several "SOUL" hits. You are entitled to your opinion. Tom Jones according to reports he has sold 100 million records in his career and that puts him in the legend category. That's fine. In the 80's he tried to remake "Kiss" by Prince and its still a running joke in the Black community. As Ms Coleman said...have several seats.

Very talented singer yet quite ungrateful , Jones gave him lot's of exposure and that's the thanks he got.

When you don't have anything respectful to write then don't write anything at all, you were not raised right, and today there are artists who collaborate with other singers from different genres that does not mean they sold their soul to the devil, it just means they want to unite the world, and bring people together. That is what music does.
