Reputation is a big thing. Have a completely reliable BMW? You just got lucky. Have a Toyota with issues? Never happens, you must have done something or got really unlucky.
There is some truth to both statements, but a lot of the time these things are greatly exaggerated.

The alternator had to be replaced twice (2 x 300$). Then Doug chose to replace known issues preemptively which wasn't really needed.

You should be able to park it all winter with no issues. I have a 1998 LC 100 with over 460 k miles. It sits all winter under a pile of snow less than 100 feet from the North Pacific Ocean. It is hooked up to a trickle charger. When I show up back in Alaska in May I’m confident it will fire right up like it always has. While I am there my 200 will sit all summer in Seattle and I know it will start.

Doug, I have a 2008 Land Cruiser. Had the same failures ... starter, radiator crack, and idle pulley tensioner. The starter was my fault. I jumped the battery with the terminals on the wrong polarity and that killed the starter and started a small fire on the battery. Thus far, the water pump is good, but I think my alternator is starting to fail. Last week, the car started very weakly and then not at all. I charged the battery and the car started again. We will see if the alternator charges the battery this week. Also, the low range 4 wheel drive switch ( relay? or something ) is broken. Dealership mechanic told me to just keep in 4 Hi. That repair is quite expensive and I don't go off-road or tow anything with this vehicle. Outside of the starter, all of the failures started last year at around 200K miles. I'm at about 215K miles. I hope to keep this to 300K. Love the vehicle and it has served my family well for over 15 years with little to no problems in -40 Degrees temp in Alaska to 100 degree heat here in the South.

While remote diagnostics from a random stranger aren't very useful I would like to say that a trickle charger on the battery might have helped with the alternator issues. With the vehicle sitting for so long the battery gets drained down then the alternator has to work harder to top it back off. For some vehicles you can also buy an oversized alternator to help with that. And I noticed you didn't say you bought a new battery for it, the old one could be failing again taxing the alternator.
But I could be completely wrong. Like you said the salt air is hard on a car and could have been causing corrosion to the internals of the alternator which wouldn't be a Land Cruiser specific problem.
I believe for your use case that you should just buy a new 3 row SUV every couple of years to keep out there. That's really about the only way you're going to have a "bulletproof" ride out there.
Good luck and thanks for the videos!

Bro I gotta see what you've planned for the replacement. That rust looks way too much, more than my 14yrs old fortuner has. So your first protective measure should've been rustproofing dercoat. I've driven though a puddle so deep the water flowed higher than the engine hood. No problem there, it took me home just fine. I should've checked the Intake for water accumulation but I didn't. Short story, next day the alternator went out. Cranked it start with a stick, found new alternator from scrapyard, drove around and its all good again. Last month again the damn alternator broke. This time went for an OEM one, lets see how it does. The point of the story is, Alternator is the only thing susceptible to breaking when driving around in water, given you don't breath in the water and bend rods. Putting a snorkel, rustproofing and Alternator maintenance would've done the job. If your new car isnt a newer LC, I beleive there won't be anything that would suit your needs for this purpose.

The idler pulley is something you just do along with the belt tensioner and serpentine belt at 100,000 miles. Not expensive or hard to do maintenance item yourself. Would imagine a battery tender and perhaps a high output aftermarket alternator from an off-road specialist company would’ve solved that issue.

We, over here in GER, had this type of LC, the LC 200, too. But here in GER and Europe it was only sold as a 4.5l D-4D V8 Diesel with 286hp and 600Nm paired to an 6-speed AT.^^
They're kinda rare to find, compaired to the smaller type LC 150 (also known as 'Prado', in a 3 or 5 door body), because of their 'low' numbers in selling due to their higher price back in the days.
We had them from 2008/09 up to 2015 to be availible but ot deleted after that without a replacement from Toyota in its class/segment letting the LC150 be the last availible LC in GER/Europe...
But even as used ones they hightly hold their pricetags up and even above 300tsd./km on the clock they go for 30k € plus, mostly to be exported to foreign countries in the East or Africa.
To get your hands on a preowned "low" mileage (speaking of from under 100k/km to under 200k/km) and well maintained one these daiys, you have to look out paitiantly and have to calculate
from 40k € and up in your pocket. Why? Well, because they're literally 'indistructable' in that config with the 4.5l Diesel and the low level of electrical fancy stuff they had compared to all of todays models and types, letting them run 300-400tsd./km at ease (rigth maintance + a basic care provided, like in all longlasting things^^) and they're the really last BIG Land Cruiser to get your hands on aside the new LC 300, which we haven't/didn't get here.😃🤩❤

Looking at Doug's requirements for a new car (3 rows, off-road capability, V8 comparable power), I'd guess it will be either Lexus LX Premium in Eminent White Pearl (3 rows, Multi-Terrain Select system + Crawl Control + Four-wheel Active Traction Control, twin-turbo V6 409hp 479 lb-ft) with some after-market mods, notably tires; or it could be a Land Rover Defender 130 (3 rows, Electronic Air Suspension + Terrain Response, available with V8 493hp, or i6 395hp). I'd bet on LX.
Or... a cheap option: 2024 Grand Cherokee L Overland 4x4 5.7L HEMI V8. Though, highly doubt that.

My Land Cruiser 100 of 2003, drove more than 500,000 km without complaints, I am the 4th owner. He had not seen so much money in his long life. Before the sale (due to moving to another country) I changed the timing belt, tensioners, rollers, and oil seals, I diagnosed the starter and generator, - I did routine maintenance for the oldie. That's it! He is happily riding somewhere in the north, his new owner is more than satisfied. The best car I've ever owned. And I also had a Toyota Land Cruiser 80. It's just a divine car. Divine. I had a similar situation with my Lexus ES 330 where the dealer told me my alternator failed since my batteries kept dying frequently. I always took my car to the Lexus dealership. I replaced the alternator and the battery in which a year later after good use of the car, the battery died. The dealer told me again that my alternator might be dead. I went to the local AutoZone to see if that was the case and they tested it which was fine. I decided to buy a battery from Sams because I noticed my Lexus branded battery was leaking acid (This was the third battery in 3 years.) The car is working better than ever plus I am saving money. The batteries from Lexus were just dying frequently on both of my cars.
