    Thanks for making this video. It was thorough and you gave an honest, concise review. I subscribed and gave a thumb's up!
    I picked up almost a full quart of the Rustoleum charcoal at a garage sale for $1 (yay!). I'm a bit more than half way into a glider rocker and footstool painting project. (Then it's on to making new cushion covers:) You're right about it taking more than one coat. I've put two on and it needs a third in some places.
    After my first coat dried, I misted (finely) as I went and it worked out well, keeping the brush stroke marks to a minimum. I've lightly hand-sanded the second coat with 600 grit (400 wasn't fine enough, imo) to a butter-smooth finish. (Original oak came through--not on purpose--in a few places. That's how I know it needs at least another coat. The sanding idea came from another CZcamsr. QUESTION: Do you think I can get by with just spot-painting those areas since I'm sanding afterward?) I'm in the middle of sanding everything and haven't wiped any of it down yet. It's lighter, of course, after sanding. But, it should darken back to original after wiping down. So far, I think I'll be happy with my project.
    I'll distress, put on a coat of clear wax, then a dark wax (info from someone else's video). My finished project doesn't have to be pitch black, but I want it darker than normal charcoal. I'll do a sample first. May have to tint wax even darker.
    Any correction to my plan or additional info you think I need? I've painted other things before, but this is my first chalk paint and distressing project.

    General chalk paint question: I am looking to paint a dresser, thinking of using chalk paint for ease but I want a high gloss/lacquered finish. Can I wet sand chalk paint? Is there a high gloss sealer that works well on chalk paint?

    • @CoastalUpcycling
      @CoastalUpcycling  Před 4 lety +4

      I would reccomend going with another paint other than chalk paint. Although you can wet sand chalk paint to a fairly smooth finish, chalk paint is not really formulated to be glass-like smooth. Depending on the color you want, I'd go with Valspar Furniture Paint. This is a Lowes Home Improvement brand, and you can get almost any color mixed up for you. There are absolutely some high gloss top coats out there. My favorite is General Finishes High Performance Topcoat Gloss. It's a water based product, easily cleans up with soap and water. 2nd choice would be Minwax Polycrylic Glossy. With Polycrylic, just be aware if you are painting a piece white, this topcoat tends to "yellow" a bit. Darker colors, Polycrylic looks great on! This also cleans up with soap and water. I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any other questions, thanks for watching 😀

      Hi thank you for the comments...if you're asking about a protect topcoat for the top of the chest, I would reccomend General Finishes Arm-R-Seal. This is an oil based sealant that will penetrate the wood grain and fibers and protect form the inside out. Since this is oil based, clean up is with mineral spirits, but if you use old T-shirt rags, you can toss after using. Hope this helps, thanks for watching 😊

    Hi I was using the same paint and color,and even after two coats and sanding between the coats ,my furniture has darker and brighter spots . This is my first time using chalk paint ,I thinned my paint I sprayed my brush with water and I stirring the paint constantly I still have the lighter and darker gray spots .I try to work quick as possible but it is hard on bigger surfaces .

    • @CoastalUpcycling
      @CoastalUpcycling  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Arabela, question...did you prime the piece before painting it? I'm not sure what the reason is for darker and lighter spots. Have you tried spraying the furniture piece with water while you paint? The high amount of sediment in the chalk paints make them dry extremely fast. A couple of sprits of water directly on the furniture piece will keep the paint from drying out resulting in a smoother finish. Hope this helps, good luck with your project. Thanks for watching😊

      Rollers work well for smooth, flat surfaces like a dresser or table top. When it comes to any areas that have detail, carvings etc., your synthetic brushes are going to be the best bet. I’m having issues using the coastal blue on a set of bedside tables. It’s primed with British Paints Prep 4 in 1 and it’s had a few coats of Chalked, but I keep ending up with uneven, dark “run” marks on the edges of the drawers, even though I’m putting it on lightly and it looks great when it’s wet - it’s not running when it’s wet? The marks only appear when it dries. Can’t figure this one out.

    • @CoastalUpcycling
      @CoastalUpcycling  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Anita Reilly...I can absolutely understand your frustration. Brush marks, when unwanted, can make you feel that all your hard work was in vain. So, here's the thing about chalk paint...it was designed and formulated to have an old world, rustic look. This means that brush marks are just part of the deal. The good news, there are ways to minimize these unsightly marks. First we need to start with a nice smooth surface. It sounds like you used a good quality primer before the paint and that is good, but you'll need to lightly sand the prime coat with fine grit, (220 or 320 grit sandpaper). Once sanded, make sure to completely remove all the dust with a damp cloth or tack cloth. Now, although spraying the paint on is one absolute way to eliminate brush strokes, you can achieve close to flawless finish with brush painting. First you'll need to use a good, quality paint brush. Synthetic bristle for water based paints. Next grab a spray bottle that can mist water. Brush the paint on in nice even strokes. If the brush begins to drag or the pai is drying to fast, give it a spritz of water to rehydrate the paint on the piece. The water acts like a lubricant, keeping everything moving smoothly. Once the piece is painted, let it dry thoroughly and add a 2nd coat. Now for the secret to a flawless finish. Wet Sanding!! For this you'll need some 600 to 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Add 2 drops of dish soap to your spray bottle and spray a small area. Use the sandpaper directly on this area. Just a couple strokes, then wipe with a paper towel, or rag. Repeat this process all over the piece until done. Seal with a good topcoat and you're done! Hope this helps, good luck with your project. Thanks for watching 😊

    • @skeetarus
      @skeetarus Před 2 lety

      @@CoastalUpcycling Thanks for your reply! I haven’t tried the wet sanding to finish, I certainly will! I did lightly sand after the primer. I’m not finding my paint is drying out while painting, or the brush dragging. The consistency seems good. My issue is with drip marks, not brush marks though, even though I’ve used a light coating of paint and it looks flawless until it dries. No drips at all when it’s wet. They appear once it dries and the colour is all uneven, with these dark marks running down. Only on some pieces, not others. I’ve tried both a roller and a brush and it’s the same story. I’m going to try some really dry brushing today like in your video and see if that makes a difference. I’ll also spray as I go on one piece and see if that helps.
      I really appreciate your input!

I did water it down a bit, but I've also been given a tip by some other furniture painters...have a spray bottle of water near by and give the piece a spritz before brushing on the next coat...it will keep the brush from sticking and give you a much smoother finish. • @CoastalUpcycling
      @CoastalUpcycling  Před 2 lety

      Hi Joy, yes this will happen with chalk and mineral paints. The particles in these paints are white, powdery substances...think cornstarch. This additive not only gives the old, farm-like, rustic look, but when dry lightens up a bit. When you seal with a topcoat, you're rehydrating the paint and this darkens the color, (as if it were wet paint again) and locks that darker look in. To keep the piece looking lighter, you may want to add some white chalk paint to your color to lighten up slightly so when the sealant goes on, it ends up being the color you originally wanted. Hope this helps, good luck on your projects, thanks for watching 😊

So, if you don’t follow instructions and recommendations, how do you expect perfect shiny finish from a matt paint, with incorrect drying time and steps 🤔

It does have to be thinned out with some water to spray smoothly, but the finish comes out very good. I'll have to try the spray can soon👍, thanks for the comment and thank you for watching 😊

    Has anyone read the warning label on the back side of this paint - warning "Cancer and reproductive harm" - what kind of people would sell something to the public knowing that it can cause cancer or cause a mother problems with her pregnancy? They are getting rich from people suffering and you know not everybody reads the back side - they are just eager to get their project done- so sad

    If it's not a true chalk paint I'll spray it with a gun only.

    Took 4 coats for a small sanded book case. The peak thru was one of the worst I've dealt with. It was so hard to with with. Berh one coat is was better. Won't be buying this again.

      Yeah, sorry to hear about your experience. Next project I would reccomend using a shellac based primer like the one from BIN Primer. I like this product because it is solvent based, meaning it dries incredibly fast. The shellac in it helps to hide peak throughs and bleed throughs as well as any possible odors. Also, the primer let's you have a great finish with less coats of paint. This saves time and aggravation. Hope this helps....here is an Amazon link to the primer I like using:
