  • Video Notes: **After more research** - Rustoleum does make a topcoat you can use for added durability/not required. They did not carry this at my store and I went online to research if it needed a topcoat since there was no mention on the paint product.

    I used this pint on my end tables about a year ago, definitely needed more than one coat but I never used a top coat and my tables are still beautiful and I have two small kids touching all over them. TFS!

    I just found your video. Tonight I used this on my RV window box valances I found mine at Wal Mart and it was a gorgeous shade Coastal Blue. Though they are material covered and I used a round brush to blot and blend , the results were amazing. One coat did the trick. I wanted the firmer surface so no sanding on these. I was very pleased Not planning on top coating. Possibly the buttons with some polycrylic.
    I'd use this again absolutely.
    No more pea green lol this is a very beautiful blue. I love Rust-Oleum products.
    But you are correct, Home Depot didn't carry many colors. I'm not a fan of them though for any paints.

    my first piece i did was with rustoleum chalk paint in linen. i did a chest of drawers which i have in my spare bedroom. it turned out pretty and is holding up well, i did have to do i think 3 coats but it was a white so i figured i would . i did topcoat it with polyacrylic. i have since used dixie belle silk which is my go to paint now. love your channel. thanks for all the info you provide.

      Yes, this paint is not one I use. After the video I tried again and it wasn’t for me, I did an update on all paints I have reviewed video and this wasn’t one that made the cut 😀. I'm glad you did a review on this. Rustoleum does sell their Clear Matte Topcoat sealant for the Chalk paint series which in my opinion is a bit garbage. I am, however, a huge fan of the Rustoleum Chalk paint only in WHITE. I found that the white is actually thicker than the Charcoal and the Country Gray colors. The "Linen White" color they offer is actually very good coverage and as you know, colors do make a difference in the consistency of the paint too. I do find this paint easier to use when you want to distress. I find it actually works better than Fusion which I'm a huge fan of.

    • @BorninaBarnBoutique
      @BorninaBarnBoutique  Před 5 lety +1

      Yeah, I figured that out online, my store didn't carry and I have my favorite topcoat anyway, so I am glad I didn't purchase to try. Thats good to know. Fusion is best to wet distress rather than dry, it has a sealer built in and any time the paint has that it is more difficult to distress - so I agree with that! :)

    Just ordered some and reading the comments and reviews, unsure if it would be suitable. The thickness and viscosity might cause problems, unless it can be thinned and maybe Fleotrol added to reduce the drying time and allow for a flatter smoother coat. Thanks for the video, very helpful!

    FYI Rustoleum has 2 base chalked a light and a dark that can be used to any color recepy. I'm in Québec in a small town and I get mine at a small local hardware store. I also got some Behr chalk that they will color in at your choice got that at Home Depot. Annie Slown is great but very expensive and super hard to get. Just pass this along. 👌

    It’s actually pretty good paint. Extremely durable. Especially if you fine sand it after a good 2-3 coats to buff it smooth. Adding wax or top coat just make it even better.
    I do a really thin coat to start with.
    Sand between every coat. I end with 2-3 coats perfect chalk matte finish and I found it’s more smooth that Jolie homes. 🤷🏽‍♀️
    One more thing. 2nd coat and if you do a third needs water added to it. Mist the surface or add water to the paint.

    I wanted to redo my pine kitchen cabinets and searched for a non-stark white color. I chose this bran paint at Home Depot because the Chiffon color was the color I was looking for. I’ve never chalk painted before and appreciate your review. I’m starting w my bathroom vanity and using Java glaze and Verathane polyurethane as the in between coat and top coat. I’m so nervous. Also I can’t use wax as a top coat because my dogs lick it off. 🙄

    • @BorninaBarnBoutique
      @BorninaBarnBoutique  Před 3 lety +1

      Kathy Clark thank you for watching - I will warn you with any white color you risk yellowing when using s top coat, I for sure would not use a polyurethane (oil based poly will yellow for sure), you will be very disappointed, even a water based poly can yellow whites. I would also prime them to help that yellowing. I don’t use this paint and did an updated review of all paints I have tried and would not recommend this one. If I were doing cabinets, I would consider a different paint line - general finishes, fusion, wise owl paint.

    Hi thanks for the review could you share what is your favorite paint and waterproof no sheen topcoat for furniture? I want to paint a cabinet oak yellowish old finish without sanding. I need a really durable finish since is going to be use a lot. I was thinking Annie sloan but what can I use to make it waterproof Thanks

    • @BorninaBarnBoutique
      @BorninaBarnBoutique  Před 4 lety +2

      SUR Vogue Absolutely! So you can use Annie Sloan if you like and then seal it with a water based poly. I do it all the time. There’s really no waterproof - water resistant. My favorite paint with a topcoat built in is General Finishes Milk Paint - but it has a slight sheen. Fusion Mineral Paint also has a topcoat but is a matte finish. As for no sheen that is tough when you use a topcoat that is flat will have less durability than the the ones with sheens due to the different resins used in the formula. My best topcoat is General Finishes High Performance Top coat - to achieve a durable flat finish - u can do 2 coats of satin and finish ur last coat with the flat. Hope that helps.

    hello, do I need to use varnish after painting my furniture? And if it is scratched, does the paint come off without varnish? Thx for the review 🤗✨
    And one more thing, a lot of people says that this paint is one of the only ones that adheres to melamine, it's good for that material after I use sand paper?

    • @BorninaBarnBoutique
      @BorninaBarnBoutique  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi. So I unfortunately after the video I used again and discovered I wasn’t a fan, not a paint I would choose to use. However, if this is the paint you are going with yes you need to topcoat. As for adhesion, most paints its about the prep that will lead to the best adhesion. If it were me I would use a gripper/primer for melamine for the best adhesion with any paint. 😀

      So after this video I used the paint a few times and it was not for me - so I can't really speak about it very much. I did an update to all my paint reviews and this one did not make the "cut list" (haha). I would not topcoat white - even with a water based top coat whites can yellow. I would recommend a more durable paint made for cabinets/furniture - Wise Owl One Hour Enamel or General Finishes Brushable Enamel are both excellent, dry rock hard and do not need an additional top coat.

    • @BorninaBarnBoutique
      @BorninaBarnBoutique  Před 2 lety

      Most any water based furniture paint can be watered down and used as a wash - I typically do a 50/50 and go from there. So I am not a huge fan of this paint, but that was just my experience - give it a try - I am sure it will work no problem!

    • @BorninaBarnBoutique
      @BorninaBarnBoutique  Před 4 lety

      Bill Simon they don’t say anything about primer in it - they do claim it’s a one coat coverage and you don’t need to prime. I doubled checked their description on their website as well. Honestly there are not many one coat coverage paints in my opinion that really cover in one coat. Anytime you are painting white as well you are going to have way more coats than other colors - typically I do 4-6 coats of white for excellent coverage . As you watched in the video I didn’t find one coat of even this dark cold was one coat. This is not my favorite brand and I do not use this one. I hope your project comes out like you want it!
