    Thanks for the run through. I used to paint furniture a lot. My finishes have all held up, even 20 years and more. It was a thing I really enjoyed doing. So, I love seeing the new products and learning the new techniques. I will share this with my daughter who may have more time for this when her 4 month old gets older.

    You are an excellent teacher. Thanks for all your insight. I am just a novice. I have gone the cheap way with Chalk Paints, Waverly Brand and now Walmart has discontinued and I cannot find it anywhere. I did my pedestal and the sides of dining room table and wooden chairs with cashew color and now they did away with it. I also did kitchen cabinets with that color too and it turned out beautiful but I don't think I would ever use it again on my cupboards because it shows spots even though I did put general finishes to seal it. so I'm going to look into the general finishes for some of my pieces that I paint. thanks for your recommendation

    Hi thank you so much for this video. I discovered you a couple weeks ago just browsing on CZcams trying to find information. I'm painting and staining because I have quite a few projects I want to tackle starting with a desk at home for my young daughter and then a dining table I got cheap. I thought I knew what I was doing and after watching just about every single one of your videos I feel like I had no idea what I was doing and you have been so unbelievably helpful. After watching you I feel like a professional in my mind but in reality I'm a little scared to start my project. I’m having a hard time finding your Cling on F50 brush anywhere, I only found cling on O45 on Amazon but it looks different than yours. I will be working only with brushes for now since I’m starting out on a budget. I did find the other brand of brushes you mentioned “purdy”, but was hoping for your F50. Also i’ve been looking through your videos to see if you use a certain white that you really like. I only really trust your judgment with this. I want to paint the underneath of my dining table all white and on the top I figured out from you that it is veneer and needs some repair work, but I wanted to stain/paint that blended driftwood look. Do you recommend or have a favorite white paint? I looked up the general finishes antique white on Home Depot but in the picture it looks more like a light tan or a very cream color unless I’m wrong. I need a white for underneath my table but I will also need to take off all the paint and use a prime on it first. I wrote down the primer and the topcoat that you recommended as your favorite. Unless you have a favorite or know of an amazing white that already has the primer and or top coat included. Thank you so much I know you are busy. I’m trying to watch as many of the videos of yours as I can in case you answer my questions so I don’t have to bother you as much with dumb questions. Thanks😊

      @@kaylamcfadden5189 Not dumb questions! So the cling on F50 is very popular I buy mine through Wise Owl Paint.com. you can find them on Amazon but the go fast. Home Depot doesn't carry General Finishes but it is a creamy white - not tan at all - go check out the color direct on General Finishes Website or Amazon sells it as well. It is a creamy white though with a slight yellow undertone. I like Fusion - it has a top coat built in (not a primer), I love my GF Stainblocker primer (also amazon) I have these products in my shop - I will provide you the link and you can go check it out - www.amazon.com/shop/borninabarnboutique.

Question about the ClingOn brush. Do they have to sit in water 24/7 or is it safe to keep them out once cleaned? Lastly, where are they manufactured? Much thanks, Ivy.

    • @BorninaBarnBoutique
      @BorninaBarnBoutique  Před 3 lety +1

      Me too! They recommend it! They are made in Holland! Cling Ons are designed to be used and stored wet. This feature contributes to the brush stroke-free and flawless finish. This also prevents the paint from drying on and damaging your bristles. The life expectancy of a Cling On brush surpasses other brushes for this reason. -When not in use, return the brush filaments to water (just the tips), do not saturate the head or handle of your brush in water. Allowing the bristles to rest on the bottom of the container can disfigure them, so use a Cling On brush holder or engineer your own. Start by using a jar with enough water to suspend the bottom of tips in, and a clip to hold the handle so that the tips keep from resting at the bottom of your container. -When you are finished painting you may rinse with water or just return your brush to your brush holder to let the tips suspend in water, the paint will just slide off of the bristles. A light rinse before use may be necessary and make sure to change out your water as needed.

    What is your preference in order for a kitchen table? Milk Paint Fusion or Chalk?

    • @BorninaBarnBoutique
      @BorninaBarnBoutique  Před 4 lety

      I would go with something very durable with a top coat built in. I would recommend (if you are brushing) General finishes Brushable White Enamel (which can be tinted if you find a retailer that does that in your area), Wise Owl One Hour Enamel or if you are spraying General Finishes Enduro Poly. I would not go with Chalk paint and Fusion is very matte and although it has a top coat in it, for a kitchen table I would go with something more durable.

      @BorninaBarnBoutique  Před 4 lety +1

      @@shelleyking6962 It can be confusing, there are so many brands to choose from. Rule of thumb with a high use piece, so with the most durable products you can. Kitchen tables can take a beating. I would recommend sealing for sure - unless you use one of the more commercial type paints with a true polyurethane in the paint formula (Wise Owl One Hour Enamel, GF Enduro Poly & Brushable White Enamel or Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane). Keep in mind white and light color when clear coated even with a water based poly can yellow, that's why some of these other lines I am recommending may be better for you!

    Very helpful videos. I am using the Java Gel to finish a table and chairs. Just finished one chair. I had a relatively big problem with streaking...this stuff is too think. I used a cloth to apply; perhaps that's the prob. On your other video you dipped brush in water to thin the milk paint and allow more work-ability. I'm guessing that is not applicable with Java Gel since it's oil based. I would like to have 100% smooth surface when complete. Do you have any recommendations? If I need to I would consider sanding off the Java and reapplying with the Wise Owl since it's only one chair. Thank you!

    • @BorninaBarnBoutique
      @BorninaBarnBoutique  Před 4 lety

      Thank you! So first question did you sand your pieces to bare wood or are you applying the java gel over and existing finish? This makes a huge difference in how your final results will look. I always apply with a foam brush and wipe back with a rag. No that doesn't work to thin this with water, but you can add a little mineral spirits to thin it, I don't typically do this, but you can.

    • @mhamrin5906
      @mhamrin5906 Před 4 lety

      @@BorninaBarnBoutique Thank you. I think it's maple veneer with a old thin coat of poly. I sanded with 150 to scuff then used a de-gloss as an extra step (I don't think the de glossing chemical was completely necessary).

    • @BorninaBarnBoutique
      @BorninaBarnBoutique  Před 4 lety

      M Hamrin so yeah that is why you are not seeing a nice even application. Any time you do not sand down to bare wood you are essentially just painting on the stain and so when you are wiping it on it is really not sticking to the surface at all and what you are seeing is where you scuffed the piece and it’s coming out uneven. My suggestion if you are not going to sand to bare wood, all the way down then you can achieve the same look color wise with GF dark chocolate mp - it’s the same color as the java gel gel and you will achieve more solid even coats.

      Also, I just view your start to finish table project. Loved it. Some amazing tips. I see how you wiped it with a rag. My grain has some imperfections so I am going for that more opaque look. Leaving Gel Stain thick leaves the "brush marks"...but I used a clean rag to apply. So, I guess my question is: would you recommend the foam or brush applicator? Thanks again!

    • @BorninaBarnBoutique
      @BorninaBarnBoutique  Před 4 lety

      M Hamrin Thank you - I would - that’s the only way I apply and you can get more product on with the foam brush I feel like than a rag that absorbs a lot of the stain

      So the short answer is no. I little while back I ordered 2 small sample sizes (4 oz) from the company, I paid $9 in shipping for it to arrive in an envelope (which I order a ton of paint and nobody charges that much for a small shipment and then ships paint in an envelope). Needless to say, they had completely exploded. It was a complete mess. When I contacted the company I was less than excited about their response and customer service. So - because when I review a paint, these are things I take about and consider when recommending to my viewers, I decided because they way the shipped, they way I was handled, was not acceptable and decided to not go further with the paint line at that time.

      Lori Mageau Dixie and Fusion are a little different - Dixie is a chalk mineral and fusion is a acrylic water based paint, mineral refers to the pigments used in the paint. Dixie is thick and fusion is thin consistency. Both great paints, both don’t need to be sealed. Both dry more matte. They apply differently because of their consistency. Dixie is a great blending paint, fusion blends but not as easy in my opinion as Dixie. Both have great color selection.
