  • In this video I am going to give you my top 5 picks for a reliable car for under $1000 or under $500 since some of these can be purchased for that low. We are not going to be concerned with looks, 0-60 times, or even MPG this video is about the most reliable car on 4 wheel s you can buy with a maximum budget of $1000. So basically I am going to cover cars that are cheap yet have no major or commonly know engine or transmission issues.

How about a video about most reliable cars (and later, trucks, then SUVs) for UNDER $10,000. I think $10,000 is an amount that gets you a more modern vehicle but is still below the budget of being able to afford a brand new vehicle. That would be a great series!

Judging by what has survived on the roads around here, I would take the Tercel or Civic. For younger folks with low budgets, you have to be REALLY careful when shopping in this price category. There are very few cars worth buying at this price point. Even if the engine/transmission are good there are a vast amount of other components that quickly become prohibitively expensive to replace. When the cost of the repairs EXCEEDS the value of the car, it is time to get ANOTHER car. My advice is to shop in the 3-5K range where there will be approximately 20 times more cars worth buying in your local market. BTW I aint too smart. I figured all this out the painful, expensive way by WASTING lots of hard-earned money paying to repair worn out, old cars ;)

Agree with the Fords, they can be had cheap. Nail on the head with the CVH engine in the escort. Valve seats are an issue. Rebuilt heads can be had on the cheap though and the head replacement and timing job is a breeze. The Zetec’s are great little motors. Head gaskets are an issue though. If I see a cheap contour/mystique/cougar say around $300 with a head gasket issue I buy it and fix it and then flip it. Very reliable cars. Very easy to fix and cheap to maintain.

The Honda problem is a block issue.
It has an open deck. If a block guard is installed before the cylinders and deck are machined, a b series becomes 500,000 miles of reliability

I had to get a cheap car because my wife's van died again (chrysler sucks) so I gave her my 06 Scion XB (115K) and I picked up a 1995 saturn sl1 for 700 bucks. The saturn has 99k on it now. Of course the plastic looks good still, but the under side looks excellent as well. In Massachusetts road salt eats cars and it is rare to see an older car rolling around unless it came from a different state or the owner puts it inside for the winter while he drives a beater car (like my saturn).

Sadly the 97 - 02 Ford Escort evaporated into rust dust 10 years ago here in New England. Spot on given the dual overhead engine too! One overheat and it's done. Saturn's carbon build-up is a problem though even in the good motors. They don't rust though. ;-) R&W - you're videos are awesome! Love your videos. Keep them coming! Didn't see the poll, but work on videos always grab my interest. Cheers!

I own the saturn, incredible car. bulletproof, great mpg, parts are in abundance, and it'll teach you how to wrench if you're young/inexperienced. but they do burn some oil, and they are uncomfortable if you drive further than 3 or 4 hours in one sitting. also mine doesn't have abs, so it is a nightmare when there's snow on the ground, but if you live in warm climate I highly recommend one

I would love to see one of these on roadtrip cars/Van's. I have a 1996 Toyota Hiace and I've had issues with it. I just had to have new shims machined for my engine. It was not cheap or fun. Being stranded in a small city for 4 days with a dog, not easy. I fell asleep on many park benches haha. I wouldn't buy this van again, it is LPG and petrol and the mechanic said that the LPG is what has caused the issues. It's also done 333, 000ks. I've driven it around 20,000 in 4 months.
