Would you want to watch the full 45 min chat between Travis and I? I'm thinking about putting the whole thing up as a standalone video. Let me know and I hope you enjoyed this one! đ€đ€
Please do! Death Atlas is my most anticipated album of the year, I cannot wait!
Definitely, one of the best current vocalists in the genre and one of the best current producers. That would be awesome to watch
yes
MORE BRO
Do it man. You're fucking awesome.
Really wish there was footage of him actually recording
Same here! That's one of the main reason we want to see studio videos... To hear everything raw in the studio with and without music. The engineer can talk about all the technical stuff in his own episode.
He might not sound good during recordings.. idk I havenât found too many live footages of him live on a studio level đŹ. Love Travis but hiding his recording processes are telling all in itself. Still much respect towards the band...
Ryan G you ever been to a show in person ? His voice sounded better live than studio all 3 times Iâve seen them, the mics they use for videos are just shitty
@@The7empest I agree travis live is sick as fuck
@@The7empest the best way he described how it sounds live is organic
I want the video of his takes , shit looks and sounds amazing đ
NOICE
Metal Blade Records SMORT
Metal blade records fucking A
Oh you teased me! I was expecting to hear him gurgling into a mic whilst his headphones fall off again đ cool video though. Very interesting đ€
Watching this made me want to be a producer. Awesome man
Ha, Sick! Do it!
Never in my life have I heard another band with such enormous talent like cattle decapitation. They are one of those bands that never disappoint and the progressively get better and better
Was looking forward to this, great video! First single sounds amazing, canât for the whole album!
Watching these vids makes me appreciate Death Atlas all over again. Such a massive and varied album, yet maintaining the ugly truths and grinding craziness only Decap can come up with. Hell yeah.
This sounds very familiar ;) You're def one of the most hands-on and efficient audio engineers & producers in the game. Stoked to work with you again, my dude!
Thanks, bud! đ
I agree with Dave. The album is a masterclass, a masterpiece and a defining moment in Death Metal. I have been a metal fan since I first heard bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin etc. I have a variety of tastes in styles, genres and bands. With this album I find that I am drawn to it by some mystical force. I personally feel that this is one of the best albums of the last twenty years from any genre. Big call? It is but I call it how I see it. To me this album is a gift that keeps on giving and I cant stop listening to it!!! Is it a concept album? Not sure. Is it a statement piece? Absolutely and thank the universe for that!! Power on and can't wait to see how the lads will top this.
Thank you for putting these videos out. As not only a huge Cattle Decap fan but also an audio engineer as well, it is super inspiring to see the process of what goes into making an album for them. I love it when a band cares that much about the process that they are willing to put in the hours of dedication to make sure their music is heard by the listener the way it should be. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for checking it out!
Wow thats an amazing walkthrough of your workflow and methodical approach for this project. Amazing, can't wait to hear the album !
Thank you so much for making these videos, this is one of my favorite records of all time. You guys fucking nailed this one.
So much in depth analysis, this is awesome thanks for the hard work and sharing, already preordered!
The vocals on the whole album are beyond insane... the number of new things Travis is doing.... are just hard to count - insane â€ïž
this is awesome! cant wait to see the next band you work with!
so sick man. can't wait for more vids
that color coded and fully annotated lyric thing is INCREDIBLY smart and easy, especially when moving them around after recording them without having to listen to each one 20 times
Loving these vids. Canât wait for this album. I have no doubts this will be a game changer in extreme metal production. Your attention to detail is inspiring. Your a legend dave.
Thanks, dude :)
Another great video Dave, your knowledge & expertise not only with gear but with sound in general continues to blow me away. Iâm honestly shocked you donât have Grammyâs out the ass on every shelf of your studio! Cheers man
đ€đ€đ€
Being in school for recording, this is such an amazing watch. I love the in depth look at all of this.
I just watched this whole video and didnât even get to hear his vocals. such amaze.
As a studio engineer who's recently started year 2 in university on the subject and recording some bands, I was really intrigued by the vocal recordings. I've always been amazed by Travis' range. Brilliant video.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome! This provides some really amazing insight into the world of putting an album together. I admire how you were able to tailor things to how Cattle works as a group, how Travis operates as a singer, and make the experience less like herding cats, and more of a 1 on 1 where each individual is highlighted to strengthen what they bring to the mix. That in itself is pure talent, and definitely why you make the big bucks lol.
Thanks, man! I'm glad that comes across because it's definitely what I'm striving for. đ€
been waiting for this one
Great video Dave! Keep em coming.
This album is so fckn sick.... 1 year later still listening to it !!!!
Damn, the production in this album really shows in your process. Absolutely phenomenal!
Thanks man!
Really an awesome serie. Thanks a lot Dave!!!
This really shows/gives hints on your job, and what is generally hidden from the production's job.
Really cool!!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing this entire series, it's proving to be inspirational and pushing my own recording process in different directions
Killer! Thanks for watching.
Amazing explanations, your help with the band is amazing, love your work a lot man!
Thanks for watching!
I started listening to Cattle right recently and man the vocals are fucking brutal. and this video just sums up what it is recording such a heavy album with such amazing vocals. Amazing work đ€đ€đ€đ€
Thanks!
These are awesome, thank you very much! I would have liked to see a little more recording but thatâs just the kid in me, your information was great on organizing and planning a mix of this complexity.đ€đ€
Thanks for watching!
Fascinating
Youâre a legend Dave, a fucking legend
đ»đ€
Dave this is so awesome! Thanks for sharing. Great production tips and advice. Also very excited for the new CD album. Cheers
Thanks for watching!
Man, I came across this album earlier today and have listened to it several times, and then saw this video and just about shit my pants cuz dude, I remember when you were doing shows with Dethroned back when I lived in Cheyenne as a teen. How far you've come! Great work on this album, the production is A++++++
Amazing as always Mr.Otero
đ€
the last thing that I recorded for my band, i did the same thing you guys did where you split up the tracking, for me i started with lows and then went back and did all the highs and it helped me a lot while tracking
GREAT job on that album! Respect!
Thank you so much for your insight regarding coding and communication. You guys are all fucking awesome!
Massive congrats ! The new song that came out sounds PHENOMENAL ! Can't wait for the whole album :)
Thanks!
I need to tell you - i am a sound engineer - unfortunately i do post production for tv/cinema (i always wanted to do music) - when i say it sounds phenomenal - i mean i listened on Genelecs and the definition you got this time is INSANE - everything has its place in the mix - there's no fighting, no masking - i am SO impressed :) (end of star struck moment LOL)
Post stuff looks super fun actually. I've been reading up a bit on it while working and learning how to make these videos. Just got a RODE NTG3 I'm excited to use on the new videos. Thanks for your kind words :)
Thank you so much for your help, Dave.
đ€đđ€
Thank you, Dave! You're the man
đ€đ€
Dave, you seem like a really fuckin cool dude. Thanks for all these tips and I look forward to seeing more from your channel!
Thanks, man! đ€đ
awesome stuff Dave. looking forward to more videos
Thanks for checking them out!
Great video! Gonna use these techniques with the lyrics and color coating in mind for the next track I work on!
I wish more bands would do these types of videos
Based on the songs I've heard so far on Death Atlas it sounds like y'all did one hell of a job. Can't wait for this album.
And now that the whole album is out and has had a minute to stew...Death Atlas is seriously their best album yet and has made its way into my top 10 albums of ALL time. I don't know how they're going to top this album.
The ceiling is limitless with the current band and team in place. Will be steamrolling the metal genre for years to come.
This is a great channel!
thanks for this. I love seeing bands in the studio, even bands I dont really like. I vote for you guys as most improved metal band.... ticks all the boxes for me....
Another great vid. Loving this series!
Thanks for checking them out!
Dave Otero thanks for making them, theyâre extremely insightful/entertaining.
The teaser track told me exactly what I already knew, Cattle is at the top of their game and Dave is a god damn fucking genius.
đ€
Ok, Travis wearing a Magma shirt is epic
Amazing time for staying productive! I am going to use your color coding method :)
Great tip about letting the vocalist hold the mic while recording. I will definitely be applying that in the future.
Just don't try it with a U47 or something ;)
This is very informative and interesting. I hope you continue to do these videos with future projects.
Thanks for watching!
Very interesting to see how your approach has evolved since when we last worked together. Your meticulous attention to detail and adaptability is part of what makes you the best producer in the industry. I'll be more prepared next time :P
Love you, Monte!
If I ever record an album. Iâm contacting you for everything
đ€đ€
Excellent!!! đ€
Dude this is rad
Thanks for watching, man! đ€đ€
Thank you for this!
What a great series! I'm not generally a fan of videos detailing the minutiae of someone's processes/gear/etc., but your clear explanations keep it interesting. Really looking forward to this album!
Thanks for watching! I try to keep myself from getting stuck too far in the weeds on the technical information ;)
All great info, will deffinetly take notes.
I'd love to get a copy of that document when the album gets released.
pffft subbed awesome content Dave!
Okay, again amazing videos, explanations are totally clear, very efficient images, great editing, beautiful quality... Nothing more to say that I am waiting for the next one !!! \m/
I am so ready to hear this new album !!! It will be sick ! I'm sure ! :D
Thanks, man! I'm working hard on the production quality here. Glad it's appreciated đđ€
Dave Otero this is flawless work đđ»
I can see the work put on these videos, it is awesome, keep doing this and youâll have more and more subscribers asking for your work ! :)
Cattle Decapitation was one of my favorite bands to see live, sadly I could never get into their studio albums đą
So helpful
that vox & hops shirt is amazing!!
Is Travis wearing a fucking MAGMA SHIRT!!!! I love this human so much!!!!!
More videos like this please!
LOVE the vox & hops podcast!
Same!
Legend!
I don't think there's another metal band out there that can have me crying while headbanging .
This is a great piece man! So much great info. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
@@DaveOteroTube You do fantastic work man! It's crazy that you got all those vocals done in 8 days! I've been watching all these Produce like a Pro interviews with people like Michael Beinhorn (my favorite producer ever) where they talk about taking months to record stuff on these major albums and, while fascinating and informative, most people don't have that kind of luxury. So its great to hear tips that are so useful in the real world. That color coding Google doc thing is perfect.
Yeah, Vox&Hop t-shirt!
For those who didn't know, Vox&Hops is a podcast by Matt McGachy the vocalist of Cryptopsy, and it's about craft beer and metal! He's interviewing metal musicians on tours, they drink craft beer and just talk! Love this podcast!
Vox & Hops rules!
Ayyyyy your in denver! Thats so cool. I just moved out here and love it.
Colorado is pretty badass.
Super cool guidance and tips! It's a rare peek behind the curtain, and hugely appreciated! \m/
Thanks for checking it out!
Would love to have seen some raw vocal performances in the video and maybe a mic comparison just with finished takes. Love the videos! Huge shout out from Australia. A mix tutorial would be sick of even just how to tame such a variety of vocals like travis's from the channel and master bus. But honestly I would watch any mix or production tutorial you did. Finally a fucking awesome metal producer and mixer making videos!
The epitome of a symbiotic relationship: Dave Otero and Cattle Decap; either are catalysts
(1:18) (grrrrrrrrrr until 1:31)
(1:31)
LOVE THIS!
Oh so I'm not the only one who fckn loves that fckn part
Holy shit my too!
Great video again Dave!!! Was wondering after the album drops will we get a video of travis in studio laying down vocals? Like we did with harvest and monolith.
The band and Metal Blade should be releasing their own studio BTS videos that might have more of that kinda stuff. I'm usually kinda busy during that part ;)
Noice!
YAY
Best fucking band on this ending world đ
Travis' way of color coding his lyrics is genius. I might have to start doing like he does. Keep these videos coming. Super interesting material. When you're putting vocal tracks through your compressor(s), are you effectively "re-amping" the vocals? You're not overwriting the original performance, I hope.
Hey Dave I don't know what you're talking about when it comes to the technical stuff, but I'm a big fan of your work and I like this channel a lot. Thanks!
Thanks for checking it out! I try to not get stuck too far in the weeds on the technical stuff ;)
Got the cd/t-shirt and digital preorder.
YES FULL VIDEO. Good shit, again. These have been so awesome. Also kind of curious, do you have just a general knowledge of all instruments or do you play one specifically?
I play a little of everything, but have lot's of experience on the producer side for all instruments.
Seems like youâre not only an expert in production and engineering, but youâve got amazing skill in making your clients feel comfortable during the entire recording process. Your tricks help the artists give the best performance, and should be adopted far and wide by producers everywhere. Call the patent office? ;)
Thanks, Frank! That's the goal, right? To get the best performance possible.
Really nice and informative video and good editing
Thanks!
goooooo travis gooooooooooooooooooo
Dave otero cant believe we just found your page. I have been cranking death atlas every day driving home from work really like what your did with the project. My bands is looking to record in the future a 3rd album - do you have quotes for your work ?
Dave your shiirt vox&hops such amazing, im homebrewer and death/gind/tech/ metal fan! greetings from Argentina
đ€&đ»
So glad you're doing these videos. Really awesome look behind the scenes. Do you typically use the SM7B on most vocalists, like Khemmis' clean vocals for example? Or have you been using Slate's ML-1 and the VMS regularly? Just curious since I know the SM7B is a bit of a go-to mic in these genres yet the VMS is an intriguing choice (not to mention whatever other mics I am sure you have access to).
I usually go to the SM-7 for harsh vocals and the VMS for cleaner styles, but I just picked up a RODE K2 That sounds great and I'm finding out where I like it.
After the Album comes out please release the outtakes :D
I always knew color coding inside of shared google docs was \m/!
The most đ€! All hail organization!
Shure sm7b is so good
