Every Pixar movie has introduced its own technical problems, from Hank's tentacle animation in "Finding Dory" to the intense layering of cloth on the skeletons in "Coco." In this episode of "Movies Insider," we take a look at how the unique worlds, characters, and practical challenges brought up by each Pixar movie pushed the studio to expand animation technology. We break down the progress the studio has made over the years in different areas of computer technology, including cloth shading, hair simulation, volumetric clouds, and advanced character rigging. Here's how Pixar improved CG animation with every one of its films from 2012's "Brave" to 2021's "Luca."

I really like how almost all of their obstacles and solutions were essentially: "We need to simulate X, but our X-simulating program isn't powerful enough... well, time to make a new one!"
Except the clouds for some reason.
smart move tho. they're thinking for the future too. "if we cant do this, then we're gonna face the same problem eventually so let's just solve it by creating something completely new and better"
@Danny007 developing a new engine would take ages, an engine is improve through time, but yes, they should improve their engine core functionality
@@LunarBulletDev No they literally said in the video that pixar made their own engine for it
@@radiatedman it's not the same to make a new hair physics engine or collision physics engine vs to make a full New game engine with new graphics, physics and logic engines

Just remember this: “You can’t rush art.”

They spend years animating even though they know dang well that the majority of viewers won't appreciate the animators. I feel like i should read credits now
I know right? We never think about the people who are the engine ...
I think most of those people probably rather to not be in the spotlight anywho ...
Lolololol
always, and hopefully they actually credit everyone involved, unlike certain 'live action' films (which are overwhelmingly dependant on 3d animatoin at this point) which happily leave out like half the animation and design staff. :
I know Toy Story 4 is more advanced than Toy Story 3, or The Incredibles 2 is more advanced than The Incredibles. But without videos like these, I can't name any changes even if I looked carefully while watching.
I can agree with you. But as an animator (not CGI but Stop-Motion) there's reward enough in seeing what you made come to life. It is very fulfilling to see how your hard work made something that is lifeless, like a computer sprite or a toy, come to life and with that tell a story. I think most Pixar animators are satisfied just with that. The glory and the credit is an extra. That's what makes the difference between a true passionate animator and a worker who just wants glory.
Every time when I watch this type of videos my respect for animators just 📈
Same

This increases my respect for the software engineers behind the advancements a lot more, since all of these advancements have been on the software side.
@@BilboSwagginsTheThird Yeah, I must agree, though the effort the animators put into the movements are unreal
People really don’t understand just how hard animation is do they?
Yeah even like 1 minute of 2d animation is so hard, I can’t even imagine how hard it is
For the record, it can take a week to animate 3 seconds. But the reward is very fulfilling. I say that as an animator myself. Not CGI but Stop-Motion. And it takes hours to animate something right, but just seeing that you brought to life something that is lifeless is a big reward in on itself.
@@fortimusprime stop motion is so amazing, I know it takes a while but it just has so much character
Nope they have no idea its easy for everyone to Criticize but nobody understands how much time and dedication even the Simplest animation takes
@@ssspottyyy Yeah! I really enjoy making them! It’s another form of art. Way simpler than Pixar’s animation but also way cheaper😅
I actually got to meet one of the artist/programmers who worked on making those clouds on the good dinosaur.
I never saw someone so excited and gitty to talk about clouds in my whole life. I'll never forget his energy and hope one day I'll have the same passion and energy with whatever I do.
aw thats really wholesome
This is what makes Pixar stand out of many. Although the stories are not always winners, the animation is always spot on. Because these people are passionate of their work. I say that as a Stop-Motion animator myself. It is very rewarding and fulfilling to create a world and give life to things that are lifeless.
Can you imagine putting all that work into the scenery and then going with *that* character design? What a shame to all the hard work on those clouds.
@@jh8320 I mean- It's a cartoon, what do you expect about the design? It's pretty unique in its own way imo
@@jh8320 Get ready to see unrealistic characters mixed with volumetric clouds. Unreal Engine 4, one of the most feature rich game engine, already have it built in, and many Fortnite promo videos (which were made using the engine) already using it.
Pixar : *realises that a background character is slightly glitching*
Also pixar : *makes a new animation system to remove the glitch*

Because Pixar learns from their mistakes
People, before, would tell artists that they're useless in society, but they forget all the entertainment, inspiration and joy they bring us while growing up.
Older generations say that a lot with animation being for kids entertainment only but now things change
They also have a fun habit of demanding art for free: showing they value it by how they want it but how they devalue it by not supporting the artist. Very hypocritical.
Artists also have to design packaging, billboards, clothes and buildings.
My principal suggested that I do engineering with robots instead when I told him I wanted to be an animator. It was because artists don't get famous until they die. I wasn't really offended but I wonder what would've happened if I followed his advice and gave up on art.
Who exactly said that? Because it seems to me that art has always had a respected reverence throughout human history
One of the many reasons why I enjoy animated films over regular ones TBH.
Details are very important 😏
Keeps you on the edge of your seat 👀
Lololol
Same. I love how, even in older animation, or less detailed animation, everything you see on screen is a choice. Like, I was watching Home Movies the other day, and it's just... ugly, but I appreciate that someone made the choice, the decision to decide that the visuals weren't very important for that show.
same
@@rodneycooperjr3223 I agree 👌
Seem like Pixar/Disney invites a new 3D engine with every movie.
I don't think the invite a new engine but rather what they do is update the base software they use. It's just like getting an update to an app...
Pixar is separate from Disney but they partnered with Disney to take care of marketing and all the release issues so they would have the freedom to make stories.
Lololololol
Just imagine some Pixar movie completely made in UE5
They've also made some of the only truly original movies in several years.
We should really appreciate the animators hard work
For real 🙌
You watch Love Death Robots?
Same goes to vfx artists
@@seraphimsforge-master5433 can't say no😍😍
@@thathaloguy2495 That's the good stuff right there
We can appreciate it just by watching the film. I'm certain most animators are not looking for glory or credit, it is rewarding in on itself to give life to something that is lifeless. I'm most certain the animators are satisfied with seeing their hard work paying off. I say that as a Stop-Motion animator myself.
The attention to detail is amazing
It is ...the guys in the background put the extra effort in to create the experience ...
Especially the audio engineers ...Sound FX and film score is life
I feel like movies like Soul is really bringing attention to animators now and how truly astounding their work is with the incredible visuals they make. They’re finally getting some recognition for all the work they do with the help of videos like this, that bring their existence to light as well as their talent. I really hope that they get more credit for what they do and hope the small recognition they get will grow as animation gets better until they finally get the plaudits they deserve.
oof! wish i could watch the movies like soul, or luca when it hits in netflix.. being F2P watcher cant subscribe cause i got no digital money/card but love to see good 3d animation work
just a note that this video shows more of the software engineer side, and not the actual animator side.
@@disunityholychaos7523 Netflix? Lmao are you a kid? It’s on Disney plus my guy
I don't care if people don't like Good Dinosaur (though granted the story isn't good and that is valid), the effort they put into the animation and realism should be acknowledged as a work of art!
That’s what I’m saying, the idea is a bit bland but the scenes are incredibly beautiful
Thats actually my critic for this movie
The animation is too good!
The backgrounds are sooo realistic, The cartoony characters distrac us from them.
It's a movie for children... Are you forgetting the concepts and plot have to relate to something a child could grasp and understand? It does a great job of relating a child's struggle of wanting to live up to the expectations of their parents and growing up to be strong. I think you should save those types of criticisms for movies that are for adults.
@@asdvvvvf5381 This movies are also for adults!
A movie for children is then great if adult can enjoy it too!
@@asdvvvvf5381 so is soul which does not hide that it’s about existentialism and that you die, and you go somewhere when you die. Based on your logic that’s something kids can’t grasp and shouldn’t be a movie for them
Boy, Pixar is just such a great studio
The one thing that stood out to me about Luca's monster-transition animations is that they never show the tails appearing at the base- only as a side effect either off screen or obscured by other parts of the body or other people. Must be that they couldn't find a realistic way to show it.
And how about the *water*! The entire Portorosso Cup sequence is just amazing.
Weren't the water programming breakthroughs created with Moana?
@@briannawalker4793 Moana was made by Disney Animation Studios as opposed to Pixar, which is a Disney owned subsidiary. I do not know how much, if at all, they share animation technology/ techniques.
I noticed that too, how they never showed their tails actually dis/appearing, but honestly I get it haha I feel like that would be difficult
What I'd like to know is "how" Elastigirl can stretch her body to wild proportions. Seriously, how does her character rig work? 🤔
They explain it in the Incredibles dvd commentary. They have a Normal rig for Hellen that can't stretch and when it is time for her to stretch they swap the normal model for the stretchy one.
The strechy model its made with physics and not with a rig, I think
the video said she has a normal rig and a stretchy rig, probably uses blend shapes or no bones whatsoever inside the stretchy parts, and uses triplanar texture projection basically to keep the texture clear and not stretched. they either had to animate the stretchy by hand as it inflated or flattened or they calculated using physics WITH animating slight behaviours. maybe there were more than one stretch rigs fit for the scene even
@@icecreamhero2375 wait, so that means Elastigirl doesn't do her own stunts? :'(

That's years of hard work and struggle for art and entertainment.. Those who studied animation appreciate even more.
It blows my mind that every time they encounter a problem they always tackle it and that it usually takes years to find a solution to also help others in the future
I've always wondered how the transformations in Luca were done. Now I know how Pixar did them. Great movie!
I never realized how beautiful the lighting in monsters university was until now
Pixar is so dedicated, they build a new system in like every movie to make it closer to perfection
Forgot how beautiful these movies actually are.
Pixar in 2030: "CGI+: It's like real life, but it is"
This is so so much underrated
Truly a team full of talented artists, still I wish Pixar did more interesting movies and not just remakes or toy story 6
...most of the movies on this list were original IP.
Corporate hates risks, as Pixar becomes more corporate, they will take less risks on unproven IP
*VI
Pixar never made remakes.
As 3d artist I should say. Every innovation in this list - was innovative for pixar themselves. Literaly. For example GI (Global illumination) have been used by different studios for years before "monsters univercity" even Shrek 2 used it. Same with clouds, same with shaders, or advanced rig systems. They are catching up with technology, not inventing.
I was gonna say that, a lot of the stuff mentioned on here has been used for more than a decade than the movie itself.
As a 3d artist as well, this video really annoyed me. Surprised nobody is really talking about this same point
Thanks for this comment, I've been doing 3d animation off and on for 15+ years and I was like... Absolutely none of this is new to Pixar for these movies. The tips and tricks and even tools they "created" have been around years before those movies were in production, saying Pixar created global illumination was like a punch to the face lmao.
Pixar was catching up, not innovating! Preach
they simply evolved their versions of those things, they invented different systems for previously existing things, different systems that end up with very different results.
GOSH!!! Not only are they creative in their stories and concepts, but in their technical work too🤩
I have always wondered how they did this
I still can't get over how good the animation is in Luca and Soul. There are shots in those films that honestly look live action. Some shots in other films like Cars 3, the good dinosaur, Incredibles 2 and toy story 4 were also amazingly animated
2:33 - I think Global Illumination per mentioned here is more in line with full path tracers as opposed to just the GI as a whole. We already have stuff radiosity to get GI working for years before Monsters University came out, prominently being used in games. However, this poses limitations, being less dynamic compared to hacky solutions in game engine's raster renderers like screen space GI or voxel GI, or full blown path tracers in offline movies.
Though I might be confusing the different variations of GI, since I only work with game engines as opposed to offline renderers.
You are correct, also bump mapping existes long time ago, however they are mentioning it very superficial, the innovation was on "ray tracing like" global dynamic illumination as Unreal Engine 5 does now in real time. It just saved on rendering instead of just RT the whole thing.
8:49 I can't stop looking at those seam lines on the arms....now I see it every time I see that outfit in the full render xD
Pixar is such an amazing Animation studio.
I play piano and was thoroughly impressed with the movement of Joe’s hands when he was playing piano in Soul. I had no clue they were able to do that.
Ikr! I heard they were actually hitting the correct note...did they?
Great series! Being a fan of Pixar, really enjoyed the breakdown of new techs.
I never noticed how much effort goes into these films… I really need to start paying attention to these things now given the effort each team puts into them.
I like the way they animate Hank from Finding Dory because the way he moves is so nice and he’s my favorite character in Finding Dory.
I always watch these movies with full attention because everything just looks so beautifuly animated that I cannot take my eyes away.

The Good Dinosaur’s graphics were unbelievable
Seeing Hank for the first time is one the most beautiful things I've ever seen on screen.
The sound design is incredible too!
I was JUST thinking about Merida's hair
Pixar's tech and art department is just too good!
I'd love to work on the tech for a Pixar movie. I'd also be interested in seeing some of the old movies remade with modern tech. The Incredibles with the tech of the Incredibles 2 would be amazing.
BIG RESPECT TO THOSE ANIMATORS OUT THERE.
I've always been fascinated on how the animators created these details and now I'm even more impressed
THANK YOU Pixar!! ❤️
Thank you so much for this! Now I kind of expect a Part 3 within the next decade, along with upcoming Pixar films and exciting new animation possibilities!
The realistic camera work in toy story 4 were what made it stand out for me. Yeah… the lighting was also amazing… obviously, but those camera work was like the digital camera was an actual camera 😁 (similar to the walle one)
It’s amazing how many details they’re able to pay attention to now days.
I loved this series! Thank you for making it
I watch animation movies mainly to get impressed by the animation itself
Thanks for this video series, it was really informative and behind the scenes looks at animation like this is always really entertaining and enjoyable for me. Glad that more animators have been getting the attention they deserve in recent years.

Brave es such a beautiful and amazing movie. Watched it a few nights ago. I kinda want to again. Hoping for brave 2
These animators are amazing! Their work goes underappreaciated
They put too much details in animation and there’s me who just watch the movie not even noticing those….
It’s crazy because seeing these details pointed out like this finally puts a name to what I found beautiful in each movie - the quality of the food in Ratatouille, the reflections on the cars in Cars, and the depth of view on the jellyfish in Finding Nemo all mesmerized me as a kid, and now I know why!
makes you appreciate the fact we can now play games in life time with all these affects instead of pre rendering
This kind of dedication and resilience is sooooo underrated. They never settle for less, even for the minute details, and never choose the easy way out.
Another great video, loved it!
This is why I always stay through the credits, to see who made the movie. Kudos to everyone at Pixar, Industrial Light & Magic, Perception, Digital Domain, Imaginary Forces, etc.

Yessss! Part two is out!
The Good Dinousour movie made me cry soo much
It's amazing how they make everything Soo detailed💕💕💗
So basically we should give Pixar more credit because they break innovations of making animated movies with each new movie.
Small correction: Global Illumination isn't a system per se, it's just a class of algorithms for calculating how indirect light "works". Ray tracing is classed as one of those algorithms, as are the popular path tracing derivatives.
These people are goddamn passionate, determined and dedicated what the heck.
I love how they take their time to make movie
