- Eastleigh Lakeside Railway hosted a number of visiting Big Steam Locomotives in August 2018. Eastleigh Lakeside Railway is located near Southampton Airport and the Southampton Parkway Railway Station and is well worth a visit if you are in the area (but check operating days).
The visiting locomotives were:
No 19 Athelstan 7.25 inch gauge from Moors Valley Railway
LMS Patriot No 45517 'Roland George' 10.25 inch gauge
No 46100 'Royal Scot' 10.25 inch gauge
LNER No 4750 'Starlight' 10.25 inch gauge privately owned
LNER No 4472 'Flying Scotsman' 10.25 inch gauge South Downs Railway

Why did both the Scot and Patriot not have three cylinders???
Sorry, I can't answer that question. Maybe one of my subscribers might have the answer!
One of your subscribers to the rescue! I don’t know for sure but it is probably due to the locomotive in question being a model and not needing that third cylinder. An extra cylinder is a lot more work so the models aren’t always 100% accurate. As a 5 inch gauge enthusiast I know what it’s like to try to cram all the gubbins into a small space.
