How accomplished is Jonathan Siegrist? Well, he’s climbed six 5.15s… JUST THIS YEAR! That ticklist includes Event Horizon, a route he bolted that’s at least 15b and very well may be harder. It’s certainly one of, if not the, hardest routes in North America. Earlier this year he had an unbelievably impressive trip to Spain where he sent three 15a's, two 14d's, and a handful of other 5.14s. Remember I’m just talking about the past 12 months here. His accomplishments on rock, from 5.14 on gear, to V14 boulders, to now countless 5.14 / 5.15 sport climbs… are crazy impressive and he's only getting better. Beyond his insanely impressive climbing resume, J Star has bolted hundreds of routes, many of them now super classic. This guy is as real as it gets, his stoke level is off the charts, and I know your’e going to get a TON out of this conversation.

He’s a stud! I’m also honored to have some of my wooden climbing holds on his homewall 😊

I was expecting this to be all about fruits and veggies… good to know the Hershey’s bar I’m dipping in a peanut butter tub currently isn’t the reason I’m not crushing my project!

it's an addiction, the best solution for me is to have NO SWEETS in the house at all and go cold turkey, after a week you crave a lot less after a month you don't even think about it any more. The first few days are awful withdrawal and cravings though. I feel like most sweet toothed people never get over that first hump though sadly. There is light on the other side of the tunnel. But yeah if you're a true addict like me you can't have sweets / desserts in moderation it's just not possible so you have to go cold turkey to really break through.

Processed and sweetened food is designed to be as cheap and addictive as possible. In addition to this, processed food sits in our digestive system and promotes the growth of harmful bacteria that destabilizes the natural balance of our gut microbiome. Cravings are compounded by these bacteria as they stimulate signals through our central nervous system prompting us to eat more processed and sweetened foods. As you said, the first few days are awful but once you starve the pathogenic colonies of their substrate, hunger cues and moderation become far easier to perceive. Likewise, fall off the wagon for a few days and the cycle starts all over again...

I had to go on a very low carb diet for health reasons, didn't want to do it tbh but after awhile, my insatiable sweet tooth pretty much went away. I used to LOVE sweets. After going low carb for awhile, my cravings for sweets are pretty much zero. Funny enough my doctor is recommending I go back to a normal diet soon, going to be interesting to see if the sweet cravings come back.

I have similar experience along with some of my friends who I adjust their diet (I'm something of expert myself😄). Everything tastes better without excesive sugar. It doesnt means that you shall cut that completely. Just keep it under control, because regular consumption increases sweet taste threshold and then you need it more and more (just like drugs) and other tastes fade. Sweet carving comes back if you build it overtime.

Michelle Siegrist here. I'm addicted to sweets. One of my faves being baking chips mixed with peanut butter. Must run in the "family." 😂

Great clip! Long story short...train hard, eat well but don't deny yourself pleasure.

Meat, refined grains and processed sweets make up the holy trinity of inflammation-promoting foods. Have gradually eliminated all three from my diet and am climbing/training harder than ever. My goal is to climb forever so I researched the people that live forever and funny enough, a blue zone-type diet also allows me to climb hard and recover insanely fast.

If you have a consistently athletic life, you could eat trash all day and still go hard. Just not everyday.
