- On March 25, 2013, in the heart of Utah's desert, a young man named Kyle Lee stood beneath the magnificent Corona Arch. Corona Arch is a geological marvel with stunning natural landscapes that Utah is renowned for. In February of 2012, filmmaker Devin Graham assembled a group of 12 friends and journeyed to the famous Arch near Moab. The resulting footage, titled "The World's Largest Rope Swing," amassed 20 million views on CZcams, attracting a wave of adventurous enthusiasts to the site. Many people were going there to swing after the craze took off from the popular CZcams video. Nevertheless, this didn’t stop adventure seekers like Kyle Lee Stocking from attempting the feat. All understood the danger of the activity.

I’m one of the detractors. I would be upset to hike to a canyon for a spiritual connection, especially an arch in Moab, and see and hear this kind of commotion because adrenaline junkies took over.

My advice is that if you are going to do a rope swing from a 200 ft arch, don't use a 210 ft rope.

For anyone who hasnt been there you cant imagine how scenic Utah is. And Ive only been to the Moab and Canyonlands area. So much variety and even in the desert often there are snowcapped peaks on the horizon.
Been there a few times. My favorite place on planet earth. Incredible landscape.
And sometimes as you drive north, you can see random waterfalls along the highway. Utah is a true adventurer’s paradise
Salute to whoever wrote the conclusion. It's not syrup on pancakes - it's a well thought-out, soberly analyzed, beautifully written and expressed call to play sensibly in the outdoors. Was the rope pre-stretched? How much effort and time would it have taken to drop the rope off for a visual confirmation, and haul it back up? You get what you inspect - not necessarily what you expect.
the length does seem like it would be the one thing you would make sure of- if anything. from the opinion of someone who would never do anything like this anyways.
I am surprised, and also happy, that this article did not delve into the technical mistakes made by Kyle and his group. The rope is not "pre-stretched", that is not how climbing ropes work - a technical flub early in the article. And yes, people who know what they are doing load up a duffle bag with 200 lbs and drop that first, to make sure they have the length correct. And then shorten it another 10 feet, just to be sure. SAD.

How could anyone "MISCALCULATE" the length of rope necessary for a safe and successful swing from an arch?
I would have measured and checked my measurements time and again, with the final measurement made by lowering the swing rope with a rock attached to the bottom to make sure the rock didn't come anywhere near the ground, and subtracted 15 feet for good measure!
My guess they didn't do the checks. When watching videos about people swinging from the arch, saw many times when they tied a heavy sack to the line and swung it.
Better idea? Just stay off the mountain. Still alive.

I have a fear of confined spaces, a fear of fire, and a fear of heights. They all have served me well.
Thankfully I can find enough thrills in life without throwing myself off a cliff attached only by a rope that may or may not hold me. Geee eesh!
A lot of flowery speech to say that jumping off a high point with a rope longer than the drop is about as insane as it gets. Turns out evolution works to preserve at least a minimum standard of mental competence in the species.

The damage to the arches alone should make it illegal, nevermind the danger to the humans who are dumb enough to do it. If such things are the only way you can enjoy life, I think your senses are too dull.

No it takes courage. Just admit you don't have it. This wasn't in a park it was on public BLM land. The archs in the parks have always been protected. There were only a couple archs that were not protected that these people can have their experience at.

RIP Kyle. What a tough way to go. Seems like they didn't do the proper safety precautions like swinging a rock or something from the line to make sure. One thing that comes to mind is his friends not only watching it, but thinking about if one of them had gone first. Best channel on YT, hands down!

Obviously, its an extreme sport. As such, injury and death are a part of the package deal.

Those parents were usually proud due to their children being the ones to make important historical discoveries.
I have a son who is like this, and the worst part about it is listening to my husband bitch about everything my son does. My son wants to become a skydiving instructor, and my husband not only has never gone and watched our son skydive, he gets pissed if anyone in the family even talks about skydiving.

Good morning! Thank you for the video! I've never heard of this before and makes me a bit nervous to watch all these people jump although I'm a thrill seeker I admit I wouldn't try it because it looks like they come so close to the ground and rock walls as they swing. It's so tragic that Kyle's life was taken attempting to try this especially since he was so young and had his whole life ahead of him. I pray that Kyle's family will find peace and comfort, and may Kyle rest in peace 🕊️🙏
I can't think of it as his life being "taken." No one took it, nothing took it. Not even him. He jumped, it went wrong, that's it. His life abruptly ended. Period.
I'm sorry, but it serves him right for jumping. The area is a spiritual one for the indigenous native indians and so should not be violated.

as a very proud U-tanion i fully believe that these areas are very majestic & very old & everyone should in deed try to see these beautiful areas we have to offer but respect should always be given to those in these areas & to these beautiful arches themselves as we truly are lucky to still have them available & not ropped off like so many other areas of the like here in Utah, as this to one day like so many other areas of the like will soon be unavailable to the public is my prediction.
Social media has ruined more unique places than anything else. I've lived in Bali for a long time and I cringe every time a CZcamsr posts another "I discovered a secret paradise in Bali" video because within two years it will be overrun with back packers.

The best example yet of human error is the guy who forgot his parachute.
As an old man, thats what younger people like to call me I find the whole bolting thing disturbing. Back in the day there was two types of climbing top roping and lead climbing or as you he people now call it trad climbing. There was no sport climbing and fixed anchors were rare. One of my younger family members who went to school for environmental science sees nothing wrong with drilling holes in the rock, it enables indoor climbers to feel safe on climbs they have not earned the skills to climb certain climbs. Then again I am old and have a different view on power tools and rock climbing. Of course what they were doing at this arch would cause damage to the rock. I don’t care so much about peoples safety it’s their responsibility and their life’s. I suppose there other locations this can be done. My advice to younger people stop posting incredibly beautiful places if you want to keep them that way. I keep my favorite tree ski runs a secret and only share them with my closest friends not the internet.
I'm into photography and I've learned to just never tag locations or name them. While I believe everyone has the right to visit places, not all are going to be respectful so I'd rather it be limited to people who will do a little legwork to learn about a cool location

If people ever wonder why various govt agencies come in and regulate recreation activities, this is pretty much why. I'm one of those photographer types who would prefer a more serene, peaceful experience in a location such as that. But I'll also admit I'd probably enjoy watching the daredevils for awhile too. Perhaps there is a location or two in the Moab area that could be set aside for the adrenaline junkies that can also be done with the utmost safety in mind.
I imagine the BLM office in that area is just up to their necks in dealing with the incredible popularity of that part of Utah. I understand they're starting to close off a lot of back roads due to misuse by 4x4s and off roaders. It's a shame that some (but not all) people hear about a cool place and don't have the respect for it when they arrive for their fun.
It's one thing when people are standing around, taking pictures, hiking by, etc. You could realistically hike out there and still get a good clean shot in between other visitors on a busy day. But when people were doing this, you might wait hours because a bunch of people showed up to swing, take time to set up, hang out, everyone does their thing a few times while another group has shown up and is already getting set up for their turn. Not to mention that continuing to allow this activity would cause the degradation and eventual destruction of the natural feature, all because some believe that because a place exists, they're entitled to use it however they see fit. They can get the same rush by jumping off one of the thousands of cliffs into water or whatever else- bungee jumping, climbing natural features they won't literally destroy, etc.
Couldn't pay me enough do a high risk maneuver.

There's a temptation to make all risks illegal to humans, but we must be allowed to choose our risks, with informed consent. All of them except the most dangerous need to be left up to adults to choose their risks if they aren't harming others or ancient formations. I'm glad they made these places off limits, without making the sport entirely illegal.

I'm definitely not trying to offend anyone. But I think it's important to be honest with ourselves and others. He was not "killed", he jumped of a cliff. The fact the I have to censor my words in this comment shows how soft our society has gotten. Brutal honesty is better than having everything sugar-coated all the time. We learn way more. I am not trying to say he did it to himself on purpose. And I do feal for the family. But was not killed.

Sorry, but I think most people wouldn’t think that they had the right to damage a public space like this. Drilling holes into the arch? Who would think they had the right to do that? You may as well carve your name into the stone. So very disrespectful to the land and to your fellow human beings who would like to admire its beauty.

I feel great sympathy for all the friends and family whose hearts were broken by this tragic, nonsensical, needless death. It is almost 11 years later. I bet dollars to doughnuts that they still mourn him and grieve the loss.
I wish that someone would design and build structures for swinging, bungee jumping, skateboarding, biking, etc. These beautiful, age-old, natural formations should be off limits to such activities. Too much human interference can cause irreversible damage. Just sayin

I went to school with Kyle. The rope length was correct, however he was using a dynamic rope. When swinging calls for a static rope. Static ropes do not stretch. Dynamic ones do, hence why climbers use these ropes, so that falls will be softened.

I'm LDS ( Mormon) and of course have plenty of family and friends in Utah.
Extreme sports are popular amongst many LDS youth because it's a way to get a ' high ' without using prohibited drugs or alcohol (mostly). There are bad apples in every bunch.
I have a feeling if there wasn’t a way to film it, like 90% of them would opt to not even drive out to watch.

I recently got the audiobook version of Into Thin Air on Audible and I love little factoids.. big time. He somehow tells this gripping story with little notations peppered in every chapter. It will explain a term used a lot or give an easy to understand version of a complex technique.. really cool stuff.
The story is absolutely bone chilling too.. heroism, selfishness, pain, determination.. it’s like the full-spectrum of human emotion. It was like 9 hours and I was done within three days.
Totally recommend just for the notations alone haha.

Sad story, i'm sure people have good intentions but it's a huge risk. Maybe local policy makers could find
a spot where this activity can be enjoyed but with professional guidance and oficial oversight, and in a remote area away from the tourist trails.. its an opportunity for a cool activity, gets people out in nature and provide an income for the local community... When it is prohibited.. people will seek ways push back against it and more accidents could happen.

I'd never even heard of rope swinging before watching this. Your channel is making me wonder if I have a slight fear of heights - or just a good, healthy respect for them, ha ha. But some of the "very high" Outdoor Disasters like this one and the Dean Potter vid and also the Remi Lucidi vid really gave me the willies. Like, I had to look away at times and just shudder...
