The albums "A Mulher do Fim do Mundo" (2015) and "Deus é Mulher" (2018) were very successfull and celebrated. She won many awards for them and she kept doing concerts (sold out every time). Her voice was quite impressive live, even though she would be seated during concerts (normal since she was over 80 yo). Maybe you could check some songs from this albums.
Elza passed in peace, her granddaughter told the press that she felted her time was ending and she was very calm. She received many homages. It's beautiful to see such an icon leaving us naturally, in the right time and being celebrated. She was a force of nature!

My favourite song from Elza is one from her album in 2015, called Maria da Vila Matilde.
Here in Brazil, there's a law called Maria da Penha that serves to protect women from domestic abuse. Penha is a neighborhood here in São Paulo, so the writer (Douglas Germano) changed to Vila Matilde cause it was the neighborhood his mother, that also suffered from domestic violence from his father. And Elza also went through the same abuse, one of them by a famous soccer player, Mané Garrincha. So this song is an anthem against domestic violence.
Elza has a really harsh history and still gave us all her talents. She was born in a really poor family, at 21 she was already a widow with four children to raise, having already lost two newborn children to malnutrition a few years earlier, and a daughter had been kidnapped a year ago. She had 8 kids, and just 4 are still alive. One of them died because of pneumonia so she enrolled in the musical contest of the radio program Calouros em Desfile made by Ary Barroso.
He tried to make fun of her because of the simple clothes she was wearing (a loose dress of her mother's held up with pins) and he asked in a mocking tone what planet she came from, to which she replied "from the same planet as you, from the hungry planet" '. Shortly after the performance, he declared that a star was born there due to the woman's talent. And with that, she was able to buy the medicine and save her son.
She was a warrior and an example as a woman, not wanting to romanticize suffering. It was a great loss for Brazilian music.

this song was the beginning of a comeback of sorts for her, she had been around for a long time and was always considered one of the biggest samba singers in Brazil, but she hadn't really put out anything of note during the 80s and 90s. This album was a big hit and she kept making more adventurous records, rather than just straight up samba, until she died. Her last few were in collaboration with indie/avant-garde musicians from São Paulo, they're very good too.

Eu não tive a chance. =( Eu redescobri a Elza e a música brasileira numa época em que, enfim, muitos artistas estavam partindo. Por vezes me sinto um 1diot4 por ter desperdiçado tantos anos da minha vida sem ouvir nossa música.

Eu nasci em 1997 e posso dizer que cresci ouvindo essa música. Sempre alguém da minha família cantarolava na casa da minha avó, não por acaso. A luta pelos direitos civis nos EUA teve um impacto importante no Brasil. Nos anos 1980 houve uma confluência : movimento das Diretas Já (1983), o fim da ditadura militar (1985), o centenário da abolição da Escravidão no Brasil(1988),... 'A Carne' representa muito para mim, me arrepio porque Elza canta a nossa indignação, denuncia sem arrodeios aquilo que todo negro no Brasil do anos 2000 gostaria de gritar e infelizmente é uma canção sempre atual. "Que vai de graça para o presídio e para debaixo de plástico, que vai de graça para o subemprego e para os hospitais psiquiátricos"...

When she says "psychiatric hospitals" she is referring to a great case that existed here in Brazil until the 90's where people (mostly black people) were sent for no reason to psychiatric hospitals, where they performed all kinds of experiments (like Jews in concentration camps). After the end of the military dictatorship, consolidation of what were human rights and the ONU, these hospitals were extinguished.
There is a book that talks about this and it is called: Holocausto Brasileiro (Brazilian Holocaust). If you google that name in portuguese, you will see the pictures, there must be documentaries too, if you are interested.
Elza morou por muito tempo por aí, depois que Garrincha, o jogador brasileiro que foi foi seu marido se foi. Eles já estavam até separados, mas Elza cuidava do Mané, como ela o chamava. Por aí, in USA, a galera que entende a colocou no nível de Ella Fitzgerald e Aretha Franklin. Elza inclusive ganhou um prêmio na Inglaterra, parece que da BBC, como a maior cantora negra do mundo à época, quando morava nos Estados Unidos. Ela voltou para o Brasil e gravou esses dois discos icônicos - carne mais barata... e A Mulher do Fim do Mundo, já perto dos 90 anos e fazendo shows pelo Brasil. Elza morreu cantando. E começou no samba, e sempre foi um sucesso no Brasil não apenas por sua voz e sua performance, mas também por sua dignidade. Grande, enorme brasileira.

Apesar de ser conhecida como uma cantora e do gênero musical Samba, Elza sempre lutou contra esse estigma e foi uma artistas experimental e nos anos 2000 lançou álbuns incríveis misturando gêneros e sonoridades, e nos anos 2010 Elza lançou um álbum de música inéditas igualmente e ganhou Grammy Latino e consquistou um novo público mais jovem colocando-a novamente em evidência no Brasil sempre com um discurso empoderador para a comunidade negra, periférica e LGBTQIA+.

Elza is the BIGGEST singer in Brazil and that's on period! She's the biggest influence on Brazilian hip hop, she's the queen of samba, when no other black woman could, Elza opened the doors! Today I'm so proud to say that she died resting, without any suffering. She had a really hard life, surviving in the slums, giving birth to her first kid at the age of 13 and posteriorly losing 4 kids, two of them died of starving. She is the Brazilian black woman, and without her, black culture here would be a lot less.
PS: this song was received with A LOT of hate, she was very attacked for singing this at the time. When it came out, she was coming back to the scenario of music, before this Elza spent several years being pushed away from the music, a lot of people tried to silence her, she lost all the money and had to restart all her career again. But today, this song is a complete anthem and we praise her for this!

I'm seeing so many of us - brasilians - trying to explain to you how important Elza was to our culture. Not only for the music, but for the attitude too. She was a black woman in a country not used to see black people or women lay the law. But she was never quiet. So... She represented a lot. She was a queeen. I do remember that song caused a lot of talk, but she was most praised for the courage to say the obvious. I remember seeing her on mtv all the time, and the fact that she was already older than some of the most proeminent artists on the market, in that she was a goddess too... She topped the sharts on mtv with that song. Anyhow... She was huge over here, and she used it to make people discuss important issues. Great lady. We will miss her a lot.

The first time she sang professionally she was very young, she went in a TV show singing contest, she had already lost 3 children, they starved to death...
She used an old dress, everybody laughed of her when she entered the studio, and then the owner of the show asked her "What planet are you from?", and she answered "I'm from planet Hunger", and then they stopped laughing and became very serious. When she opened her mouth and released her voice the crowd was stunned, and from that day ahead her life would never be the same
I don't remeber quite exactly how it was received, but this song was always playing on MTV and also Elza was very respected here. So it was no surprise that she would drop a song like that, due to the fact that she was always fighting, a very strong woman! This is not her first time delivering a very strong tune.
Her best record performances are from 60s and 70s. She sang her own way with little to no formal training with a "jazzy" style in an instinctive manner, as she did it before ever knowing any jazz singers. Her versions of classic real sambas in the 60s and 70s are incredible also in the 70s she recoded sambas from unknown songwriters, that later became the new top dogs. Her personality was as strong and unique as her voice, she did things her own way no matter what. Perhaps she had such a hard and difficult childhood and young years, of extreme hunger, poverty, racism, sexism and violance, that she feared very little in life. Late 90s early 2000s she recorded some contemporary songs (such as the one in this video), a continuum of her previous work as root samba spoke about the lives of poor black mixed people, social inequality. Unfortunatly 2010s, the more recent recodings of her, were pretty much just "fake over leftists" triying to use her to promote shitty poorly written "songs" about asses, buts, under fake "funk"...dont waste your time with this period. Her live performances from 60s to late 90s are all amazing!

Elza Soares was a timeless singer, her songs were recognized by young people and adults. It had a history of struggle, it was black, it got out of poverty, overcame all kinds of obstacles and prejudices and was successful until the last days of its life. She is a singer who is proud to say that she is Brazilian.
