  • John Lennon mind games reaction.A song that focuses on the games of war, religion and love.Lennon sees all of these as the major obstacle of peace amd love.He advises to cut out the mind games and make love not war.
It's a typical Lennon philosophy and sadly the irony of his message was felt in the manner in which he left this world.

How many different ways can I express how much I love this man’s voice? Harri, you always seem to land on my favorites and this song is another one. I just wish he hadn’t been taken from us so young. He would have had his 80th birthday last October. Thank goodness for the great wealth of musical masterpieces (with and without the Beatles) we can and do still enjoy today from this genius. Bless his beautiful soul. His energy lives on. 💐❤️✌️

I adore Mind Games. After the Beatles separated, I used to listen to John's music for hours on end. John always was and still is my number one Beatle.
I remember when he died, I was walking on that cold December 9th morning to university when I met a friend who gave me the terrible news, I just went back home and spent hours crying in my room. It was like losing someone close to me as I had grown up listening to the Beatles. Then, I stopped listen to him as I felt extremely upset and could not come to terms with his death. It took me years to go back to his music again.

To me it’s about a lot more than love, religion and politics. It is possibly his deepest song.
We're playing those mind games together
    Pushing the barrier, planting seed
    Playing the mind guerrilla
Chanting the Mantra "peace on earth"
We all been playing those mind games forever
Some kinda druid dude lifting the veil
    Doing the mind guerrilla
Some call it magic, the search for the grail
Love is the answer and you know that for sure
    Love is a flower
You got to let it, you gotta let it grow
So keep on playing those mind games together
Faith in the future, out of the now
You just can't beat on those mind guerrillas
Absolute elsewhere in the stones of your mind
Yeah, we're playing those mind games forever
Projecting our images in space and in time
Yes is the answer and you know that for sure
    Yes is surrender
You got to let it, you gotta let it go
So keep on playing those mind games together
Doing the ritual dance in the sun
    Millions of mind guerrillas
Putting their soul power to the karmic wheel
Keep on playing those mind games forever
Raising the spirit of peace and love
    Love
I want you to make love, not war
I know you've heard it before
Here are some comments that I think capture John’s meaning in this song:
"Mind games" are a good thing, not a bad thing. Mind games are the seemingly small but history-changing efforts of a small group of spiritually enlightened "mind guerillas" to "push [the] boundaries" of human social constructs, to "plant the seeds" of peace, and to "lift the veil" of the divine. This song is a rallying cry for all those silent bodhisattvas, sufis, and gnostics who through their small actions and intentions guide humanity toward the ultimate answer, which is...love.”
"Mind games" is a euphemism for our entrapment in the five sense world that we perceive as reality "projecting our images in space and time" through love and peace we can realise our unlimited potential "love is the answer" He wanted for us to understand we are all one infinite consciousness. “
We play these games throughout life of acting a certain way or doing things that seemingly please others. We have faith in the future, out of "Now", Meaning we never allow ourselves to truly live life in the here and now.
I think John was speaking to the "Now" meaning try just once to think about right now. Smell the roses, look at the trees and appreciate what we have at present.
Absolute elsewhere, dreaming of being not in the present as if the present holds no answers, so we project ourselves into a different time or space with the hope of something better.”
I take the time to dig this up because this is how I’ve always felt about the song. I love it!
This is not to say that any of your comments were not true, I agree with you Harri. I just wanted to get the deep message out there.

I read this comment and now they say we're in 2024, but, hey, I agree with you. Intuition and participation in other life...

I think John missed Paul, George and Ringo in the studio. They always knew exactly what to play. John would have to tell the studio musicians "Don't play Rock and Roll guitar". They came in wanting to show the Rock Superstar what they could do. "Don't play Rock and Roll guitar. Just play da da da da da!" And that's what ended up on many of John's solo tracks. I've loved this song ever since it was released. I bought single and played it over and over. I played it so much that my mom came to my room and asked me not to play it so much as it was starting to get on her nerves (she did this nicely). This was the only time she ever asked me to stop playing a record! Anyway, I love the production of this song, it's so layered and dense. The whole album is often overlooked in Lennon's catalog. Plus it has a great cover!

Very good song. But there are other solo songs that are even better in my opinion. « God », « Love » are two. « Woman » and « (Just like) Starting Over » about his wife Yoko. « Beautiful Boy » about his son Sean. « Hold On » is another gem. « Watching the Wheels » is also a great song. There are more too.😃

“Mind Games” is a song about EMPOWERMENT for his generation, the “mind Guerillas”. ; “So Keep on playing those Mind Games Together, faith in the future, out of the now. We all been playing those mind games forever, some kind of Druid dude lifting the veil”. But I disagree as I think the arrangements (Lennon playing slide guitars like an orchestra) and vocals in stereo sound mystical with those other synth sounds

Harri, I totally appreciate that you most often react to the studio versions with no visuals to distract you--I'm a firm believer that's the best way to experience a song for the first time in almost all cases during the pre-MTV era. It allows you to focus on the music and really get lost in it--letting the sounds and lyrics create the imagery in your mind. But now that you've reacted to this song, I would recommend you watch the following video of the song, which has some fantastic footage of John in NYC: czcams.com/video/bVYXWVs0Prc/video.html

By the time this was released in the 70s, the whole 'peace/love' thing was growing stale to many, including music critics. 'What happened to John's exuberance?' many would decry while giving the album a lukewarm response. For myself, John did not sound in to it, unconvincing. The production, John's first attempt at producing himself, sounded a bit muddy. After all, his most recent mentor was Phil Spector. John's choice of background singers seemed incorrect as well. Basically, the thing that bothered me most was that every track on the album is really good but wasted by the production. There was even a rumor at the time that some unnamed person came in after John to clean up the rough edges. I've never been able to confirm that.

Excellent Lennon song choice. And your analysis... wow! Given what you said Harri, I have a video here about the guy who took that infamous photo of John autographing something for his soon-to-be killer. The photo in all the papers, magazines and new reports. But this is a bit more about that persistent photographer who actually broke thru the ice and befriended John a bit before the murder. A very touching story... czcams.com/video/eB0LcLNgdP0/video.html You mentioned John's anti-war activism, pushing for peace on Earth and all, you should do his "Give Peace A Chance". It's not a masterpiece of his music, but it's very catchy and if you can do the CZcams video with lyrics that would be ideal. As you do his various solo works, it's one you must hear sooner or later. It's one of those songs he could get any crowd singing along with the chorus! "Bagism" man, LOL! ✌️😎
