This album came about because of the “Here come old flattop” line from “Come Together,” which John lifted from Chuck Berry’s “You Can’t Catch Me.” Lennon was sued and had to record three cover songs from rights owner Morris Levy’s catalog. Love this whole album!

The album was released in 1975. It should have been released in 1973, but the producer Phil Spector disappeared with the tapes and kept them for 18 months. He was at his most paranoid at this time. He even phoned John Lennon during this time In a conspiratorial state of mind fearing that Richard Nixon and the CIA were out to get him. Eventually the tapes were returned and John Lennon finished recording the album. If you notice John Lennon winking at the beginning of the film, this is because he was being interviewed by Bob Harris of the BBC 2 music programme The Old Grey Whistle Test. John Lennon invited him to stay while the track was being recorded and gave a wink to the viewers.

Ben E King's version is such a classic that you think no one should even try to cover it. But then I heard John's version and I just love it so much. Another song like that is "I Will Always Love You" by Dolly Parton/Whitney Houston. It was kind of sad that so many people thought it originated with Whitney. Dolly handled it with class. She could have garnered a lot of publicity for herself by making more of the public aware that she wrote it. I feel like she took a step back and just let Whitney shine. It's fun seeing the reactions to finding Dolly's version.
Just saw a a great duet you should check out. Olivia Newton John singing "Jolene" with Dolly Parton. From the clip, it sounds like Olivia may have done a duets project. May find some other treasures by going down that rabbit hole.

This version of ‘Stand By Me’ came out in the early to mid 70’s (not sure of the exact year) on Lennon’s solo album called ‘Rock and Roll’. It’s all of the songs that The Beatles, and The Silver Beatles before, The Quarrymen before them played when Lennon and rest of the lads were teens. So this was a very sentimental album for John.

John Lennon was a really humble man. A friend of mine is the founder member of a Brazilian fanclub of The Beatles, called Revolution, that was found in the 60's. He met John in in NYC in 1980, he stood in front of Dakota building, and gave the brazilian version of the LP "A Hard Day's Night" to the gatekeeper, to give to John. On the other day he saw John and said: "Hi, I gave the LP to you". They chatted for, 10/15 minutes and John told that he would make a World Tour in 1981. After it, he also said: "When I come back from the tour, I will call the other 3, and let's see what we can do." He also asked him which Beatles song he liked the most. He said he didn't have a specific one. But he kept insisting. He said that the first Beatles song he had heard was "She Loves You". And he asked why: "No reason". After about 10, 15 days (John had the address card) a gold record of "She Loves You" arrived at the hotel with a note from Fred Seaman, John's secretary: "Marco, John asked me to send you this record because it will be better in your hands than in his."

John did the “Rock and Roll” album as compensation to a publishing company for nicking the opening line from “Come Together” from a Chuck Berry song which the publishing company owned the rights to.

Love John's cover with its crazy arrangements due to the huge Phil Spector. On the same album with only covers, we can find "Sweet little sixteen" (Chuck Berry), "Peggy Sue"(Buddy Holly), "Be bop a lula"(Gene Vincent), "Ain't that a shame" (Fats Domino)" etc.

This song comes from what I consider one of Lennon's best post-Beatles albums. I bought it when it first came out, in vinyl, of course. If you want to top off Black History Month by learning a little about a treasured old school American artist - an original Woodstock performer - look up music by one of my idols: the late Richie Havens. He also covered a Beatles song or two, but his folk rock is truly iconic.

What makes Lennon’s cover so perfect is that he recorded it during a painful time in his life, the so-called Lost Weekend. Separated from Yoko, drinking/taking drugs heavily and apparently quite miserable, so you really hear the pain and emotion in the way he ‘screams’ the vocal - he means it, he wants help, be it from Yoko, his sort of girlfriend May Pang (weird relationship!) or love from the audience … as he wasn’t selling too well, either. You can also see his trademark defensive humour at play in the performance, taken from the British ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’ programme (he also did a great performance of Slippin’ and Slidin’) and his insecurities at the bum notes he hits singling, “tumble and fall”.
Such a complicated man, so interesting and, not perfect, but my favourite artist ever!! ❤

I love John Lennon, and I think he was a musical genius. I didn't care for this remake. I bought a tape of his songs that came out in 1986, which had this song. You really should listen to "Jealous Guy." That's the song I couldn't live without when it got some airplay back then.

This is from the late 73 thru late 74 sessions of what would become the John Lennon Rock N Roll album when he was separated from Yoko for 18 months and would be released in February of 1975 and was the last work he did before reuniting with Yoko and having Sean and went into a 6 year sabbatical from the business. Give a listen to outtakes from these sessions of John covering Angel Baby and The Ronnettes song Be My Baby. Be My Baby really pulls on your heart strings.

This made my day. Thank you! The Beatles always had great love and respect for black musicians dating back to their earliest days. They refused to perform in front of segregated audiences in the 1960s.
John Lennon really makes this song his own. The original is probably the best version, but John’s version is pretty damn good. He once said “a good song is a good song. You can jazz it up, but if the song is there, it works”.
I got one that I think you both will really love and it’s “Coming Up” by Paul McCartney. The song and video are great.

I lover John, he was flawed but wonderful. Seeing him with Yoko reminds me of me and my wife together, which is easy as she actually sort of favors her, and I have hair longer than John's, but just on the way they are together, head on laps and shoulders and such, it reminds me of what I have and I'm so grateful for.
Favorites of his solo stuff you should hear: God, Watching the Wheels, and Working Class Hero.

John called up Phil Spector and asked if he'd produce an album of oldies. John said he didn't want to be hands-on for once. He didn't want to sweat over arrangements or try to write epic new songs.
He just wanted to come in and belt out some of the old tunes that he did before he got famous. Spector accepted and John's voice made these tunes his own but the production is all Spector.

This is from his album Rock’n’roll, featuring only covers of songs John loved. The album had a troubled path to completion, since the producer, Phil Spector, was in the midst of some sort of paranoid mental breakdown: At a late stage, he took the master tapes and refused to part with them. It wasn’t until much later that John was able to retrieve the tapes and finish the album. The irony of the video is John was dating May Pang at the time, during what he later referred to as his ”lost weekend”, but really wasn’t any different than any other relationship. (He and Yoko were separated: Yoko had thrown him out, which winded up being an 18 month pause in their marriage, between mid-1973 to early 1975).
