    I went to many games at Highbury (officially Arsenal Stadium, though it was never called that in colloquial conversation) back in the seventies and eighties and nineties. In the late 70s and very early 80s (Terry Neil and Don Howe era of O'Leary, Brady, Rix, Stapleton, Rice, Willie Young, Sunderland), attendances for Saturday games would hover between 55,000 and 59,000. The atmosphere was amazing but even more electric were the Wednesday nights of European football. There were no floodlight pylons - the lights were positioned at the top of the East and West stands.

      As simple as supply & demand. They wanted housing. How do you make housing more attractive? Well in general, greenery and sunlight helps. Hence the glass facades and the park in the middle. So yeah, its redevelopped, but i think they kept the spirit imo :) i quite like it but thats just my opinion aha. Although those glass walls inside the garden are hidious and should be removed

    Problem is... its a nice development. But hardly if at all refers to the fact it was once a great football stadium. Its 4 apartment blocks with a strange, but nice, modern garden. The only thing left is the 2 facades and the nice old marble halls.

    I always thought not keeping the stadium as some kind of historical heritage was basically a crime against humanity. Also Arsenal's downfall pretty much began right around 2007 when they moved to Emirates stadium which is an average looking stadium at best.

  • @kr4559
    @kr4559 Před 2 lety +87

    Arsenal died the second we left Highbury. Can’t stand the new stadium. Or the name. Football in general is long gone. The redevelopment of Highbury for me goes hand in had with the death throws of English football.

    • @mackovo6
      @mackovo6 Před 2 lety +11

      Hated Arsenal back in our rival days being a United fan. But Highbury is a GOLDEN LANDMARK. All the memories, history, tradition and culture are there. Emirates Stadium feels very sponsored due to "Emirates". Football is ruined. Cringe names like West Ham, Spurs, Man City, Stoke City stadiums where it is named based on a brand and just the club's name. Why can't they expand Highbury and keep its identity?

      Hmm, ok old Hbury was way too small.
      The new one is too clinical and lacks standing. Lacks the historic feel.
      Maybe the Anfield route ie slow, laborious but big expansions was the way?
      I hate how football has become a propaganda exercise for homosexuals, trxxxies and immigrants. Its a working man's game, hijacked by propagandists Neoliberal weirdos.
      And the players, clubs and governing bodies largely have contempt for the fans.

    Arsenal played Liverpool in the little woods cup at Highbury in the late 80s, 0_zero after full time and extra time but after the game I sneaked onto the pitch and took some of the Highbury turf now part of my back garden, football is not the same and nor are the stadiums the players get paid too much and most of them are foreign I have lost interest and the love for football but I am pleased to see some of Highbury remains have you seen what's happened to West ham's ground another team with great traditions but who let their ground go to rack and ruin, if you want real football go to the Scottish premier League, all team still have homegrown players who don't get paid too much,
